Illuminated Glass Sign (Without Glass)

  • Two years ago, I built this commission based on an early-20th-century, illuminated, painted-glass sign from an old hotel. And I was attacked by a hummingbird in the process.

    NOTES
    ▶ I also used a "frosted glass" spray, which didn't appear in the video, on both the red and yellow portions of the sign.
    ▶ I cut the paint masks on a consumer-grade vinyl cutter called a Craftwell eCraft. I don't recommend it only because they haven't updated the software in forever.
    ▶ It wasn't covered in the video, but I had to score along the edges of the paint mask before peeling it up to prevent pulling up the paint, since there wasn't much grip between the paint and the acrylic.
    ▶ The tool I used to fasten the acrylic face in the cabinet is a framer's point gun. (See below for product link.)

    i really like how the burned pine followed by stain turned out. I see a lot of people burn pine and then clear coat it and I've never really cared for the look the stain makes all the difference. Also love the way you used the textured plastic for the yellow. Great work

    Great sign - pro LED strip trick - wire BOTH ends of the strip to the power supply. Stops brightness dropping on long runs, reduces the chances of failure when a connector fails (solder the strips, don't use those plastic joiners!) and lowers the current on the traces.

    Under cabinet lighting was the worst to fall off.

    Another great sign! What if you sanded the plexy with a really fine grit paper, applied the vinyl paint mask, brushed it with clear coat to seal the edges, then sprayed on the tinting? This should eliminate having to score the edges of the mask - a tedious pain - as well as preventing the paint from capillary-ing under the mask. The main thing is - would the mask adhere well enough to sanded plexi?

    • @WesleyTreat
      @WesleyTreat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I sanded the acrylic, the clear parts wouldn't be clear and the black parts would've been foggy.

    I appreciate your showing us how sign makers achieve their special effects. Are there any considerations to consider when painting acrylic to ensure that the plastic doesn't react adversely?
    I used to think that humming birds were adorable then I watched several of them at my father in law's house. They are absolute jerks to each other. I think I know where JK Rowling got the ideal of the Golden Snitch from.

    • @WesleyTreat
      @WesleyTreat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine paints with strong solvents in them would probably have a reaction, but I suppose it just comes down to testing them first.

    • @WesleyTreat
      @WesleyTreat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And, yeah, hummingbirds can be jerks. There's usually one that hogs the feeder and runs the other ones off.

  • @Schwuuuuup

    Good video! You could argue it is very self-explanatory but I prefer more narrated ones. Lengthwise 12 minutes are just fine, but the shots where you just see tools at work could be packed with a bit more information. This is not critique but only my humble opinion - others a welcome to chime in or disagree.
