Η φράση "να μυρίσω τα νύχια μου" προέρχεται από την αρχαιότητα! Νομίζω ότι πήγαιναν οι Έλληνες στα μαντεία για να τους κάνει μια πρόβλεψη η Πυθια και αυτή βούταγε τα χέρια της σε ένα υγρό και ύστερα μύριζε τα άκρα των δαχτύλων της. Και έτσι προέβλεπε το μέλλον. Κάτι τέτοιο τέλος πάντων

Smell my nails....actually the origin of this one is quite interesting. In ancient times Pythia used to predict the future while in a trance, after dipping her fingertips in daphne oil and inhaling the scent. To people seemed like she was smelling her nails and guessing.

"you will eat wood" Ancient Spartan expression. In Ancient Sparta we used to hold the children in a column and beat them with a stick. It was exercise to withstand the pain. There is also the expression "will play wood"

I've recently started learning Greek, what a great language!
It has a strange familiarity to it, like remembering something long forgotten rather than learning something entirely new.
After listening to a few idioms along with reading others in the comments I have to say that I really enjoy the spirit behind the humor.
I'm definitely going to have to make a trip across the ocean and experience the people and culture of Greece.
My absolute favorite has to be "χέστηκα". It literally means "I shat myself" and it is basically our own version of "I don't give a fuck".
"Hey I don't think that John likes you very much, what you did last time made him angry and I don't think he will forgive you easily so chances are he won't be at Saturday's party."
"I shat myself."

I can't believe Turks didn't get it when you said "you'll eat wood" cuz it's pretty common in Turkish as well , we use "sopa/kötek yemek".

In Greece, the "wood" idiom is also used in any form of competition between opponents - literally any form of competition, not just the obvious fighting games where the opponents get hit and hurt. When someone/something is infinitely better than their opponents, we say "Ρίχνει ξύλο στους ανταγωνιστές του" ("Drops wood on its competitors", meaning that it "Spanks its competitors"). 😉

(greek ones): όνου πόκας=donley hair ,ζητείς δικτύω άνεμον θηράς=want to catch wind with a net ,τράγον αμέλγεις=milk the male goat :} , ορνίθος γάλα ζητείς=want milk from birds , ωόν τιλλείς=cut the hair from an egg.
IN modern greek the the wind cathing one is used, alongside with the bird milk alltough nowadays has a positive conotation--> given by merchants bragging that they sell everything you could think off, and the one that enjoys the most popularity is the egg haircut.
They all fall in the realm of exercise in futility, that is the meanning.

I want to know whether Greek use an idiom I have heard all over Europe, from England to Denmark to Spain to Czechia - "Do not look a gift horse in the mouth"?
In Greek it's a bit different: «του χαρίσανε γάιδαρο και τον κοιτάζει στα δόντια» - "he was gifted a donkey and he looks at his teeth." It's not a piece of advice but a piece of criticism, and it's not a horse but a donkey. But the message is the same.

My brother and I learned Greek by speaking it exclusively with our father and going to Greek language classes at our local Greek Orthodox church, but my wife is Canadian and these videos have been very helpful as she learns the language. Smell my fingernails actually comes from ancient Greece.During the Olympic Games in ancient Olympia,priests were putting their fingernails in daphne oil mix with other stuff and smelled the ingredients, to get in exctacy and tell who would win the game,so someone could bet on him.The ones that went to the priests and saw them,thought that they were actually smelling their fingernails and thats were that idiom comes from till now.You can find reference on that,even in the Byzantine times.

The first idiom is the exact same in Brazil except we go beyond and make the person imediately immortal.
Smell is a sence, that is a kind of information (so "smell my nails" is close to trying to get the exact information/solution).That is the cause many Greek sayings use the verb "smell". A Greek Psychiatrist recently wrote a novel on that sence!!
We have in Turkish tepemin tası atıyor. It means kind of my skull is popping (or being throwed, throwing) we use it when we got really angry.

If you had replaced "wood" with "stick", more people would have understood the idiom. Besides, we don't actually mean "you will eat wood" but "you will eat a piece of wood" that is a stick.
You're probably right. But we didn't want to make it easy for them!
We say you will eat wood, not stick. Wood is the general one for getting beaten up, if we want to specify we say βεργα(stick) for punishment, παντοφλα(slipper) in context with wife/mother etc, κουταλα(wooden spoon) mom to kids, μπατσο(slap/punch) etc.
@@MementoMoriGrizzly Eating wood means nothing. Eating a stick, metaphorically speaking, means being beaten with a stick. The Greek word for wood (the material), also means a piece of wood, therefore a stick. Besides, there is also the compound Greek verb "ξυλοφορτώνω", consisting of two parts, the noun "ξύλο" (wood) and the verb "φορτώνω" (load). Obviously, it doesn't mean load sb with wood, but beat sb with a stick.

Δεν ξέρω αν έγινε και δεν το μπήκε στο βίντεο απλά νομίζω χάθηκε μια ευκαιρία (για το ξένο κοινό που βλέπει το βίντεο να δει ότι μοιάζουμε) να επισημάνετε όλες τις εκφράσεις που είπαν και είναι εκφράσεις που λέμε και εμείς πχ η κοπέλα που είπε πως στην Αγγλία "όπως έστρωσες θα κοιμηθείς" η ο Ιταλός που είπε στην Ιταλία "θα φας την σκόνη μου"
Σωστή παρατήρηση. Αλλά κόψαμε αρκετό υλικό (ακόμα και μερικές επιπλέον φράσεις που είχαμε ρωτήσει και γυρίσει).
Επίσης, το 'τρώω ξύλο' εκτός από την κυριολεκτική, έχει και μεταφορική έννοια, που το λέμε όταν κάποιος αντιμετωπίζει προβλήματα που τον έχουν φέρει σε πού δύσκολη/ντροπιαστική θέση. Π.χ. μια ομάδα στο ποδόσφαιρο, όταν χάνει με μεγάλη διαφορά τερμάτων, 'τρώει ξυλο' (από την αντίπαλη ομάδα), ή όταν ένας 'τα ακούει' από πολλούς για κάτι που έκανε ή που δεν έκανε, 'τρώει ξύλο', ή όταν η τιμή μιας μετοχής στο χρηματιστήριο πέφτει υπερβολικά, 'τρώει ξύλο'.

Το 'κάνω το σκατό μου παξιμάδι', δεν εννοεί ακριβώς ότι το βαφτίζει παξιμάδι (αλλιώς η έκφραση θα ήταν 'λέω΄ή 'βαφτίζω' όπως στην έκφραση με το ψάρι που βαφτίζεται κρέας). Το 'κάνω' έχει την έννοια του 'ξεραίνω' (αποξηραίνω, στεγνώνω), οπότε εκεί έχουμε όντως ένα πράγμα που μοιάζει οπτικά με παξιμάδι, και (κυρίως) δεν έχει οσμή, αφού δεν έχει καθόλου υγρά για να εξατμιστούν.
Νομίζω ότι έχει και κάποια ιστορία από την οποία προήλθε η έκφραση (όπως στους περισσότερους ιδιωματισμούς), αλλά δεν είμαι βέβαιος.
Ίσως το «κάνω» της έκφρασης να εννοεί ότι όντως το χρησιμοποιείς ως παξιμάδι, π.χ. το βάζεις στον ντάκο.

@@EasyGreekVideos γενικά, έχε υπ' όψη σου ότι τέτοιες ιδιωματικές εκφράσεις συχνά χρησιμοποιούνται στη συντομευμένη εκδοχή τους, η οποία με την πάροδο του χρόνου μπορεί να αλλάζει χρήση και έννοια, ακριβώς λόγω της συντόμευσης. Για παράδειγμα, η έκφραση 'σιγά τα αυγά' (εγώ με υ το έμαθα στο σχολείο, όχι με β), είναι συντομευμένη εκδοχή της έκφρασης 'σιγά τα αυγά να μην σπάσουν', που λεγόταν κοροϊδευτικά για κάποιον που περπατούσε ή έκανε οτιδήποτε πολύ αργά - όπως αν θα μετέφερε αυγά, προσέχοντας να μην τα σπάσει, αφού όταν βγήκε η έκφραση δεν υπήρχαν οι χάρτινες ή οι πλαστικές θήκες. Ένα κάρο που μετέφερε (και) αυγά, το καταλάβαινες από το ότι πήγαινε πολύ πιο αργά σε σχέση με τα υπόλοιπα κάρα που κυκλοφορούσαν στο δρόμο, αφού αν κινούνταν πιο γρήγορα, τα αυγά θα έσπαγαν. Επειδή ήταν αυτονόητο το δεύτερο μέρος της πρότασης, για οικονομία χρόνου δεν λεγόταν, κι έμεινε το 'σιγά τα αυγά'. Βοήθησε βέβαια σε αυτό, και η συγγενική ιδιωματική έκφραση 'σιγά τον πολυέλαιο', η οποία πάλι όταν πρωτοειπώθηκε, είχε εντελώς διαφορετική έννοια και χρήση, από εκείνη που απέκτησε στη συνέχεια, καθαρά από παρανόηση - κι επειδή έλειπε ένα κόμμα, όταν το γεγονός δημοσιεύτηκε στις εφημερίδες της εποχής.
