The improvisation is just a demo of amteurish playing. bends are out ouf tune. his vibrato is that of a beginner. People are complaining about the overuse of wah but the only reason he's using it is because it hides all the mistakes and the sloppiness of his playing.
His playing has definitely declined for sure lol. But he’s gotten older and he loves what he does. I personally think that he was a kick ass guitar player in the 80s tho

I've been a Metallica fan for over 30 years. And I'm a working guitar player. I know full well the extent of Kirk's abilities. I can tell you what years his playing peaked, when it started to wind down and when it's been at its worst. All thing considered, this is by far NOT an example of his best work. But, the guy's in his 50s now, and he's achieved the success of 10 guitar players. Some guys start to slow down and their nerve function/reaction time diminishes with age. The same can be said for any professional athlete. Michael Jordan isn't the basketball player he was 25 years ago. The aging curve gets musicians just the same, eventually. Some guys it happens to later than others. I think he's lost some picking accuracy and speed, but I'm not going to tear him down over it. He's paid his dues and has nothing to prove anymore. If you want to hear his playing at its peak, listen to Ride the Lightning. The solos were his fastest, his most out-of-the-box (for him) and the most accurate. There was good work on Puppets and Justice, but in my opinion, Ride the Lightning was his best technical showcase. As for this solo, the guy is up there having fun, loving it and selling that energy to the audience. That's more than can be said for most of the armchair critics out there. I know guys who can emulate Malmsteen but can't perform to a crowd or exist in a band. Having enough of the total package to get out there and make it happen is a gift. Kudos to Kirk.

Doesn't necessarily have to be his best to be great. He's having fun, right? Gotta enjoy what you're doing and go ham anyway. Besides, he's still a thousand times better than me. I think the heart and soul for music is just as important as speed and accuracy, and Kirk absolutely has an incredible ear for sound.

The solo isn't very musical and lacks any structure or excitement, Kirk seems to have given up and doesn't really care, especially in 3:17. Sad but true.
