How to Apply Henna on Curly Hair, Locs and Straight Hair - Professional Colorist Tips

- This is a pretty in depth video on how to apply henna hair color to a variety of hair textures. These are real (paying) clients who have expressed their honest reviews. They allowed me to record them, ask them questions and give feedback. I so appreciate moments like this because it's sometimes busy and I want to respect the client's time and privacy. This was not planned and just in the moment, which is actually what I really love because it really shows them as they really are. I just love my clients!!!! You guys are the best.
(Please note if you are looking for the mixing part of this process please go to our playlist on Henna Hair Color: • Playlist )

My question is .. how did you do the indigo process if they have to sit in henna so long?
I've been doing henna off and on since I was in my l8 teens.
I was doing it all wrong all these yrs. My paste is never as smooth as yours.. and some of my greys around my face dint take so when I did indigo it just skipped over them.
Thank you for this video. Can you show the indigo process plz?
Pss.. I wanna come get my head massaged by you.. I'm in northern NY tho. However my family is in dmv area. Ft Washington md and silver springs md so, ill make a trip to visit them and hopefully get an appointment with you.
I'm currently growing my grey out but I don't like it. I need my blk hair back.
Also, does the grey grow back yellow or dingy? For some reason it did for me in the past
@@aquafina6544 Hi there! The indigo was in their henna mix. These videos show the one step process, not a two step process. Fro black tones it's a two step process for sure though but typically I would recommend 50/50 of henna and indigo and then follow up with indigo. Same way to apply both. Have you tried using heat as yet?
@@HennaSooq no bcus I used to cover with plastic and a beanie over night. Then do the indigo immediately after washing out henna.
Okok ill try the 50/50
I haven't done henna in over a decade. I was just suffering with rinses. I currently do cassia cassia curls and your goddess mix.. I'm ready to let the grey go bcus I truly hate it. If it wasn't on my face area I probably wouldn't care. But having super curly hair they grey is a pain to deal with its like a severe problem child. Mad stress.
To get black can I mix henna and indigo together

The dolls in the background are everything!
Thank you! Yes we adore them.
@@HennaSooq I would love to know where I can purchase them?
Seriously!! Just enlisted my creative daughter to help me make one....lol
They are so fun 😍 I just saw them !
@ Henna Sooq: YESSS, for real, indeed! 😂👍👏💞
Really appreciate the inclusivity! I could not find a video showing black curly hair like mine till I found this one.
That last client has so much personality. She seems like a lot of fun.
After 30 years+ of chemically dying/bleaching my hair, I used the Sooq Moroccan henna and indigo on my hair for the first time today and my hair feels amazing! I am so excited to see how the color oxidizes over the next few days. Thank you for all of your educational/helpful videos and sunny disposition.
YAASSSSS!!! That is amazing. WOW 30+ years!!
I really love doing henna on my hair and I am glad there are professionals like you who are helping other stylists learn how to apply this to people's hair.
I have been using henna since 1975. Henna has come a long way. In 1997, I started using henna on my clients as well as myself and when I started doing sisterlocks? I really began full time Henna and indigo use.
There are many ways to apply henna and the special concoctions people add ( like cockscomb or black tea)
Everybody tries to be definitive, over the years and many clients later..no one is.
For years, I have sworn by the 2 step process for dying: applying henna first, thorough rinse, next dayI overlay with Indigo.
Not saying other ways are not successful but This method works for me.
I have used both Henna sooq products and Mehandi.
I prefer the Mehandi indigo because it appears more blue black.
I use citric acid ( lemon juice ) and apple juice ( malic acid) to mix my henna with and yes I dye release well over the time listed here: ( about 12 hours). I apply my henna and keep in 8 to 10 hours.
Overkill? A weaker dye? No. It is amazingly strong.
I dye my gray hair along with previously hennaed hair 4x a year and the color lasts about 3 to 4 months, sometimes up to 6 months.
I wash my hair first with a chelating shampoo. Rinse then apply the henna.
Rinse but no shampoo. Next day the indigo.
Apply immediately after mixing with salt and vanilla pudding mix ( ikr)
It makes it smoother and the salt aids in the indigo grabbing.
My hair is past my butt, glossy, and very strong.
I have tried a shorter release time and application but it did not work for me though it was fine for a few clients.
FOR a strong black, I never mix henna and indigo.
It is henna then applied within 24 hours the indigo.
After the indigo, the hair is soaked in a moisturizer mixed with distilled water to soften.
I swear by my method as do my clients. The color is very strong and lasts and lasts.
I will use Henna sooq or Mehandi for the henna ( takes 700 g for my hair) but use Zekhara Indigo for my black because henna sooqs was a warmer brown..I prefer jet, unapologetic black.
No protective creams.
The staining washes or fades within 2 days.
I leave the indigo on for 3 to 4 hours. I don't let mehandi's dye release as it oxides very fast ( turns black) when it goes from green to black it is releasing.
I do my hair in 6 section increments because it is far too long to do without oxidizing other ways.
I yell my Indigo clients to apply the mix green, then cover..when it is black it is releasing make sure it is black on your head NOT in your bowl.
THAT is my routine and my results speak for themselves.
My clients only need applications about 4x a year at most unless they have super fast growing new growth.
Very strong hair using henna since 1997 nonstop 3 to 4x a year.
My hair is 3b, 3c, 4a and 4b in a 3 inch patch in my crown. Medium density.
I do NOT shampoo after the indigo for 2 weeks this helps to set the dye.
I just started getting serious gray this year in my crown. I am 62. To reduce grays, eat a collard green smoothie each day or go raw.
Prior to doing sisterlocks I was a professional colorist. I no longer use anything except henna and FYI most cosmetologist REFUSE to use henna due to allergy issues, time and mess. I get my hair retightened by a SL consultant..my hair must be thoroughly cleansed and at least 2 weeks old before my consultant can touch my hair due to allergy issues of certain other loctitians.
Excellent details! What is the name & salon location? I would like to come there!
I’ve been using henna in my hair for the past two years, I love it so much! It’s so beautiful and rich looking, and lasts so long! I love it mixed with amla powder and hibiscus for a really deep burgundy color ❤️
Hibiscus does NOT give color!
I would like to see the results of the ladies who have the stubborn Grey's henna/indigo
So I don't remember which video of yours it was that I watched, Khadijah, but I followed your advice and got THE BEST results with henna I've ever gotten! I used henna a while back for at least 1 year then took a long break. After 1 treatment following your advice, my hair is smoother than it ever was with my regular treatments before! I think I was letting the henna mixture sit for too long before applying and also leaving it on my hair for too long before. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and energy and I can't wait to try out some of your products and programs because you clearly know what you're talking about
Welcome!
This is the best TH-cam channel I've ever seen from a black owned brand. So far I've only bought the ready made clay and two powder ones as well as one shampoo bar. So glad to give your channel as much of a chance as the products!
It's black owned? Isnt this woman in the video the CEO.

Wow...the dolls in the background!! 👏👏💞
You left out Locs but the last video of yours that I watched with Curly Proverb covered some of the questions that I had. I just tried the one step Henna Indigo a couple days ago but it didn't get the dark rich color I get with two steps. So I'm doing the Indigo tomorrow so I can get that rich black color. Here are some of the questions you answered for me: Should my hair be wet or dry before henna application? There are so many different opinions on this. Damp is the answer. Do not put conditioner on your hair before a Henna. Also adding oils to henna lowers it's effectiveness. Don't use shampoo right after a henna so the Henna can keep on working. Just rinse well. Conditioner is okay unless you are doing an Indigo afterwards. So I hope I got all that right. Let me know! Any tips on how to get black or even a dark brown with the one step Henna/Indigo would be great! Thanks so much! 🌺
She says in the video that henna is best over damp hair
@sisteryaya24
You really need to do the 2 step process if you are going for back hair or it just doesn’t hold. You get a rich beautiful color.
This was super informative! I adore your red raj. I could relate to the “superhero hair” comment, because henna has really strengthened my fine strands. I didn’t realize the importance of keeping the henna really moist during application. Definitely going to look out for that next time. Thanks for all the info!
Welcome! Thanks for watching! Red Raj should be back in about 2 weeks. So excited!!
Me either. It will be damp moving forward

You did well but where is all the the products thanks again for all your great information ❤
Thank you . This was very helpful. I have been researching for a week now. I was going to the hair salon and was torturing my scalp with hard dye chemicals just to cover my grays. The hair dresser had to reset the timer and leave hair dye on my grey and white hair longer in order to make it turn. Now I am happy that I found a. better solution!!! I have my ingredients and will be watching more of your videos before I get started.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! I just made for the first time the henna and indigo dye. I watched this video as well as the one on how to prepare it.
The video was extremely helpful. I am going to sit now for a few hours under my heat cap and let you know how my hair turns out. I'm excited about the results!!
Can't wait to hear how it turns out!! Please let us know
It came out nice! It's a chocolate brown and the greys have like a caramel color. So it looks like I highlighted it that way.. lol it's perfect. I gave myself a deep conditioning and then used your Ayurvedic oil, leave in conditioner spray and deep moisturizing cream on my hair. Feels nice and soft. Thank you for a wonderful product!💕
I want you to do my hair. I absolutely love henna. I know your client said you don’t need to add this, that, and the third but I like adding hibiscus and aloe vera to mine. Sometimes oils too. And now I’ve got a new favorite-it’s your cocoa henna kisses. I used them with my prepoo and they smell soooooo good and then I use henna. I know you said your hair should be clean however I think my greys need extra moisture because these wirey thangs be dry. I never have any problems coloring my greys with your henna. Love my red streaks 💆🏾♀️
Oooh share your henna kiss recipe I’d love to hear!!!
That's amazing!! Love when clients can just discover what works best for them in the end. I just want everyone to be happy and have gorgeous healthy hair :) Whatever it takes (naturally)!
Thanks for covering locs! I loved to henna my hair before I locked it. I am 10 months in so I haven't used it since, but once my hair fully locks up I'll be back to using it!!

I love that you shared to keep the stubborn grey edges moist so the color can deposit on them. This was my struggle when using henna and indigo. ❤
Yes, me too! So simple, yet I never thought of that being the reason it didn't stain enough sometimes.
I missed that. Can you explain this
@@SLBruno
Okay I know you asked a couple years ago. Basically don’t let the henna dry. Keep damp and well covered with a plastic cap or you can even wrap with Saran Wrap or a plastic grocery bag and put a old T-shirt around that to keep the heat in and also to keep the henna from drying out. You really want to leave in for about 4 hours. I usually put in my hair in the evening; place a old towel on my pillow so I don’t stain it bc it will drip from the warmth of your head being covered. I then sleep in it and wash out in shower when I get up in the morning w/conditioner. It will be messy! Every time you wash your hair for about 2wks the water will be orange! * also when you make the mixture make sure you cover w/plastic wrap and let set for a few hours- she recommends 8-10 hours but that really isn’t necessary.
I been henn sing for years now. My herbal store stopped selling it , I've been using Rainbow Henna, but I want something like this that's more natural. I stopped going to a hair salon because they kept telling me natural hair products were bad for my hair. So I cut my own hair and I color it myself. Can't wait to get this.

When using Henna as a coloring agent, I typically leave it in for 24 hours. Is this recommended?
FYI: (2 year later response)24 hours is just not needed your hair will take up all the color within 8 hours. It will not add any extra benefits!!!

When I wake I just rinse well with conditioner.

So are you doing the henna and indigo in one step? Is there a video for mixing the two powders?
yes, she has one and there's lots on yt
Yes in these videos I'm doing one step processes. Varying from just henna, to henna/indigo for brown and up to dark brown tones. I do these more often then a two step process for black tones.

OMG I love this. Where are you located. I've been using Henna but can't see to get my color to change.
Some are saying Henna is not good for curly hair, makes it frizzy and hard so I’m alil nervous. I have low porosity hair which it’s already tough to retain moisture. I heard Henna coats the hair making it tougher for moisture to come in. What would you recommend for that please?
Hi' i've been doing henna for the lastten years, and i'm fine with it, but i have thick 4c hair so after a year i decided to relaxed my hair, it's more lose and easy to comb.
Really liked the video! Love your dolls! What can you use if you don't have Henna Balm for the edges?
Wow..just wow, very informative and relatable as far as my hair goals!!
I'm new to using pure henna on my hair. I have used henna chemical hair color and it was fine at first, but later I became sensitive to it. That chemical dye and others after that I have used in my hair have since been grown out. So preparing to use a safer and chemical free dye. I was seeing in this video that a hair color brush was used for application of the henna mix. In some other videos there are others applying the henna mix with only thier hands. Which method is best? My hair is natural and curly. Thank U for your informative videos about henna and applying henna, every bit of information from someone knowledgeable and experienced helps!

Hi loved this video. Can you tell me which henna is best to loosen up my curls
Hi! I’m a man of color descendant from the Tribe of Gad. I purchased some dark brown Henna from The Henna Guys website. I came across one video where you mentioned to use Aloe Vera Powder. Do I mix it in the Henna or the Indigo? How much do you recommend to add to the mixture? Also, I have a old fashioned on the go drying machine. Could I use that to lock in the moisture with two shower caps on my head or should I buy a heating cap to put over the two shower caps? Because I do have woolly curly/wavy course low porosity hair. This is my first time as you can see. I’m asking a lot of questions! 😆 I don’t want to mess up.
mix the aloe in te henna. indigo should be by itself
Hi! How often do you recommend using this treatment? I did it yesterday but after watching this video I realized that I didn’t not have enough at all for my thick hair & the consistency was too dry 😩 still had great results but I want to try again this weekend
She said from 4 to 6 weeks....🇧🇷🎉🧨 happy new year
My hair was super dry and it was really difficult to have the henna on. So yeah next time i will make sure to spray some water over my hair.
I use olive oil with my henna and it helps prevent drying
JazakAllahKhayr sis! I’ve been putting henna for years now and im happy to see a hijabi helping women. What happens when after you’ve rinsed henna out and the next day your pillow is stained from henna thru a sleep cap. What do I do?
Question: Where did you get the dolls with the afro hair texture in the video. They are so regal!
Thank you for this video. Where did you get the black dolls? They are lovely.
