That video, I hope you could see was an Upper Miss Valley Towboat going around Algiers Point northbound with a fairly small. Tow and he’s saying “come on girl, come on girl” referring to his boat trying to make the steer around one of the toughest corners on the LMRR. It just shows how much power is needed to do the job right. Jimmy
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO, CAP! SURE MISS RIDING WITH MY DAD ON TUGS WHEN I WAS A KID! I SPECIFICALLY LOOKED UP VIDS INCLUDING 9 MILE POINT AND TOWING AND FOUND YOU!
Please explain how you steer the barges for a turn. Do you push the stern of the barges in a direction then straighten the helm and push in the new direction the barges are facing?
They probably were shooting NCIS: NEW ORLEANS. Back in the late '80's I was the engineer of the Jefferson & Cypress Bayou RR in Jefferson, TX when a movie was being shot downtown and I blew the whistle on the steam locomotive. The mayor came down and asked me to stop.
Never heard the ship blow a horn at you. Is horn signaling still required on the river? Or does GPS take care of knowing where the traffic is going to pass?
The NOLA Riverwalk is a great place to watch the ships. The river bend then the bridge (Crecent City Connection). One ship lost power and crashed. At least they had the good sense to take out the Mall.
I was on a tow boat years ago when the port engine tripped out on overspeed. It took a minute or two before the engineer could get it back on, but we were just above a bridge on the upper Mississippi at the time and the captain didn't have enough control to miss one of the bridge pilings. After we hit the tow broke apart. There was a bend below the bridge with a couple of docks. One of them was hit and it looked like it exploded. I thought we were going to pile up on the bank, but a small harbor tug saw the problem and was able to help get things under control. What a mess that caused. I just had installed a new phone system on the bridge and the first call the captain had to make was to the USCG and the insurance company. I went on to work on ocean going ships and believe that I was on one of the Cape ships you showed down in NOLA.
River time is required by USCG, but doesn’t necessarily, although usually, require. One of the best wheelmen I’ve know never decked. He got his time as a cook.
Everyone, all good captains and pilots, start at the bottom and work their way up. When shit is hitting the fan you have to know everything about everything that’s going on because it all factors into your decision making.
One of the last places anyone wants a foul is in front of all the other captains lol. Would not want to hear all the chatter. Lol I'm sure it happens 🤣
There is a smaller ship infront of the 2 gray ones off your stbd side that we are offloading 15 barges onto. Yall have a safe one on up Capt. Im on the Robert Ingle with STC
I live in the new Orleans area, you were struggling at Algiers Point, very treacherous bend you handled it like a true professional!!
I’m a liquid barge cleaner in Lemont Illinois just want to say you’re a cool ass captain man keep up the videos !!
Another fine adventure on the lower, Cap. Thanks for the video!
Captain great to see anew video. Please post more often. Have a great and safe week. God Bless!!!

Steer it just like you would a small boat. Propulsion in the rear.
Another awesome video Capt! And laaawwdd i heard it in your voice when that swing killed out.
Got my attention, for sure.

Capt. Kyle looked like a very interesting day! Be careful keep the vids coming.

We still make meeting agreements, it is done via marine radio channels 67 and 13
I am from NOLA. Those two Naval vessels are part of the Reserve Fleet. They are ROLO's. Supply ships, roll on roll off.
You made it look like a cakewalk Captain. Excellent job. 👍👍👍❤️
Yeah man! Much longer and you would've been in a tight spot!!! Great video!!
Wow! we may have crossed paths on the Illinois around Hennipen, always giving you guys a wide path staying out of your way.
moving to memphis how do i go about getting a job on a boat like this one?
Damn, Radio conversation picks up great down there in New Orleans !! 😂
Make Happen Captain 👩✈️
So how do you get used to switching around on different tows?
Not really an issue unless it’s going from 30 to larger. At those widths the increase in difficulty is way more noticeable
Does anyone know if if New Orleans is on the VTS system?
Was it turning too tight or too wide?
Eddy working hard under point. We were long and limber.
How deep is the river at downtown New Orleans?
I’m guessing about 60’ to 100’ but off too my head I don’t really know/remember
We don’t normally run sounders down there. .
If you think about it throw Sounder out there next time just one to get a rough figure
I stalled out there many many times too many times to even count
Thanks for the new Vid....was wondering if you were doing OK.
Film crew just called, they said that they want you to come around for take two!

It’s a sight to be seen knowing how large your tow is only to have a container or cargo ship pass you like a speed boat.
Safe travels Jaxon Aaron....hooked up and hard down.
Cap how is subchapter M affecting you guys on the bigger tows??
Same as all
I haven’t seen that it will be much more stuff than AWO has required for years. That’s the conspiracy I see in it. Lol
I lived in new Orleans right there at the point,,old Algiers point..I loved it there
Next time you should have blown your horn jumped out there waved at him and see if they were stuck up or not LOL
Good job cappy! Hold on to your britches! We have that kind of water coming over the next couple of weeks! See you out there bro!
Who dose the polishing in the wheel house.
Deck crew
I had a gal pal that was a great"polisher".😂😂😂
I had that same vape setup just in green.
Also way to row the old chariot along.
I now have a new definition of Pucker Factor. Come on girl....
Great boat handling lots of practice and patience and experience
I have a friend who works on that container ship
It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing. How you liking the Jaxon Aaron? Great video!
Loved it. This was from over month ago.
Do you have a favorite towboat

I transport those containers when they come in off the railroad. It's a very interesting job😂😂😂😂
Had to be filming 🎥. NCSI, NOLA around the turn on the right @ 9:53. ... 🎬📷
one year I stalled out under the GNO bridge!
Who almost died cap? Also did you hear bout the Marquette fleet boat crashing into Mardi gras world
Swing quit for a few seconds. Did you see the video?
marktwained when you turn a corner do you aim your barges towards the inner shore line?
marktwained yeah I watched
Turn the way you want to go. Not sure what you are asking..
marktwained do you ever come all the way up to Minnesota? What's the farthest you go?
you know that river better than the catfish!
Can you become a Captain without having to start as a deck hand?
River time is required by USCG, but doesn’t necessarily, although usually, require.

Hell of a dog leg in the beginning
I always get a little wide so I can get a point before my head gets into the hard water off the point.
That is the only way to make it. 👍🏻
Make a catfish climb a tree that MARC train will
Main current on port head and bounce current in bend on starboard stern tried to kill your swing
Hard eddy working under point of turn
You came swinging down threw there like you done that before
One of the last places anyone wants a foul is in front of all the other captains lol. Would not want to hear all the chatter. Lol I'm sure it happens 🤣
NCIS NEW ORLEANS
You make it look easy!
It ain’t always
I had a good time and it was "interesting".

You can see the smaller ship @ 1:51 in the video
This was from well over month ago.
