  • Survival expert Les Stroud, the host of "Survivorman," rates desert-survival scenes in movies.
    Stroud breaks down the accuracy of natural phenomena like sandstorms and flash floods as seen in “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” (2011), starring Tom Cruise; and “127 Hours” (2010), starring James Franco. He describes the best ways to avoid desert heat and sun while watching “Holes” (2003), starring Shia LaBeouf; and “Dune” (2021), starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. He speaks on the accuracy of myths surrounding hydration seen in “Better Call Saul” (2015-2022), starring Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks; “3 Godfathers” (1948), starring John Wayne; and “The Way Back” (2010), starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and Saoirse Ronan. He explains the best way to get yourself out of quicksand, as seen in “Hidalgo” (2004), starring Viggo Mortensen. Finally, he discusses the surprising dangers of sand dunes seen in “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum” (2019), starring Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry.

      *WHY do they HATE volume, though??*
      This clip has very low volume vs normal TH-cam videos..
      Which is terrible for people watching on phones.
      It might be fine for SOME people watching on computers with headphones, or people watching on TVs where they have 2 separate volume controls.. but even for some of those people it's terrible as well.
      *PLEASE JUST TURN THE VOLUME GAIN UP WHEN EDITING/"POST-PRODUCING" THE VIDEO, PLEASE*
      This video has extremely terrible volume gain vs average TH-cam videos.
      *The only way that's a benefit to anyone is if the intention of the producers of this video WANT people to FALL ASLEEP OR STAY ASLEEP while this video is running.*

      @jameshalldorsson9695 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @anidiotmakesthings He cuts up his seminars into short form content because that's what the audience on TH-cam demands, more people watch short form content than long form content in this modern era, if you want more long form content from Les watch the entirety of Surviroman, beyond Survival and other programs he has on his channel. One of my favorite things on Survivorman was when he showed how he filmed by himself. Like a shot of him dramatically walking away from the camera. You see him leave the shot, which is where the scene would cut for the show. But on his BTS, you see him have to come back and collect the camera. He's not only surviving, he's doing extra work for the show.

    To be fair to Dune and to Les (who is awesome btw) Dune is a planet with basically *zero* water, so in the deep desert there really isn't any of those animals to worry about in the caves (except for the occasional desert adapted mouse) and the clothing they wear is specifically adapted to collect and process all of their bodily functions and turn it into potable water. So it's really unfair to Les(which he notes!) to sort of grade such a film.

    • @maybeyourbaby6486
      @maybeyourbaby6486 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Eh, I think he gets it - I got the feeling that he was really just using it as a jumping off point to talk about the cave survival in general. Even though it's set on a fictional planet, Frank Herbert was very clearly inspired by irl groups like the Bedouin tribes, and because of that Dune kind of becomes a medium of (indirect) learning about how real life desert-dwelling cultures have adapted to the climate. We know that some of it is very close to reality, and I think it's worth pointing out where reality is different, and what the irl situations Dune draws on look like.
      He did give it a low score but also said it was hard to give it a rating since it depends so much on fictional tech and climate, so I don't think we need to take it very seriously :P Maybe he could've been more clear in the phrasing, but I really feel like Insider is being very heavy-handed in the editing room to condense these as much as possible, so maybe he DID and it was just left out of the video.

    • @maybeyourbaby6486
      @maybeyourbaby6486 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I WOULD have appreciated some commentary on what in Dune is applicable to real life - stuff like sleeping during the day and travelling during the night feels obvious, but you also have stuff like burying your stilltent under sand and trying to reduce water loss from sweating etc. He already talked about why drinking your own piss isn't A Thing, but I feel like the Fremen/stillsuit approach would be to put it and sweaty clothes in your solar still?

    I live in AZ and haboobs are like that. I also grew up in Utah and have also seen the slot canyons fill up so fast with extremely strong running water.

    Notice how Les rates by going up from 0 rather than down from 10. For instance when he rated Mission Impossible 6/10 it was for the good depiction of the sand. He focuses on the positives, this is a wholesome approach to these ratings. Even if its a small thing. Les Stroud is really cool

    Man people need to get his TH-cam channel to a million already so he does more survivor man episodes. He's getting old. Have to get them out of him now while he can do it still.

    Les Stroud!!! So entertaining to watch. My dad used to love watching him too, RIP dad 2022
    I remember watching Les Stroud's original documentary about living in the woods in a log cabin him and his wife built, it was so fascinating and before the trend started on youtube in the past decade. Now everyone does it and wants those views. Les was the OG Survivor Man.
    Edit: I love that Les Stroud also calls it a Space Blanket lollll

    Les Stroud is the best! One man, no crew, filming the reality of survival, not the pageantry of it for TV. Loved his show.

    I've been in several large sandstorms in a vehicle, once with visibility at 10-15 feet. You might shorten the life of your air filter, but no, you're not going to "choke" out your engine.

    I absolutely LOVE how many times in any Les Stroud interview he always makes nameless remarks directed towards that fake Bristish idiot who shall be left unnamed, let's call him Grizzly Trager. It's sad some channels still feature him as a survival expert. Les is the true GOAT and will always be.

    Hey Insider the grill on the front of a car isn't the engine air intake, that's where cooling air for the radiator goes, air intake is usually in one of the front wheel wells.

    Came here just for Les! Survivor Man will always be number 1! Real (possible) scenarios and the correct ways to respond to actually survive.
    No throwing yourself off a waterfall tied to “vines” b.s.
