I remember meeting Reuben Langdon, Dante's VA and Mocap actor, at a convention years back. Contrary to the commercial success of DMC3, he disclosed that DMC3 got A LOT of hate because this younger Dante was snarky, cocky, and too energetic compared to DMC1's cool, collected, and more level headed Dante.

@@Cuhrayzee I think its because some fans are WAY TOO clingy to the original and in a way AFRAID of change. And unfortunately, the fandom proved that true after the reboot. Which honestly isnt as bad as the fans make it seem. The gameplay was fun and honestly, if the reboot was its own game/series and NOT connected to Devil May Cry in any way/shape/form, it would have done a lot better reception wise

also DmC aka DMC4.5 or chronicles of vergil or the reboot game was pretty gameplaywise, it was a bit shallow and easy combat i guess but it is honestly better than lotta other hack n slash games

This actually makes DMC2 seem tragic in a way I haven't seen before. Usually people focus on just bashing the game without consideration for the team that worked on it, but some of the cut content you highlight here gives the impression that the team failed not for lack of creative drive or carinf, but because of mismanagement combined with over-ambition until Itsuno stepped it to salvage the project into something shippable.

It's just Capcom suits making bad descision after bad decision. First they remove the team that created DMC1, then they try to push it out as fast as possible to capitalize on DMC being an overnight genre-defining success, then they scramble anyone available to work on it.
It was the definition of a cash grab.

5 is filled with apologies and love letters to DmC because Itsuno was so upset with how it was handled by Capcom, and literally almost quit along with Ninja Theory if he didn't get full creative control. Turns out letting developers do what they want is almost always a good thing...

Making videos like this is a balancing act of what to include and not, as the flow of the video is really important for us.
We also omited cape/hair physics in DMC 3 section, and moves found in DMC4SE files, as we wanted to focus on other parts which we think are interesting too.
I hope to release a "behind the scenes" video with our process and how we made some of the discoveries later, so, stay tuned for it.

Nice video. I'm a huge fan of this series and have been picking up details on the development of each game wherever I can. Once upon a time I found a tonne of details from Kamiya himself answering fan questions for an ancient Resident Evil php forum (and no, sorry, I can't for the life of me find it again). So here's some bits you either missed or left out about DMC1:
    -Vergil's original name was Paul.
-After being scrapped as a RE game, it was briefly named Karnival, then almost Devil May Care, but became Devil May Cry once they noticed a potential copyright issue.
-The script used for the DT meter and a number of demonically built things (the wall plate switches you need to attack to activate, Nightmare's final arena, the red things Nobodies suck out of you) is Siddham script, which was almost like the Japanese Buddhist equivalent to Hebrew in that it's a "magical" language often appearing in occult works. Specifically the variation documented by 8th century Shingon monk Kukai (pr Kobo Daishi as he's more commonly known in Japan), largely for writing the sutras and other "magical" talismans and such.
-The premise of the original game was that Spencer was literally hundreds of years old due to his successful alchemical experiments and was challenging Tony/Dante to become his successor, facing off against Paul/Vergil for the right. Tony had been a black sheep up to that point, using his nanomachine and biological enhancements to work as a sort of mercenary, largely for the police (given his second name was RedGRAVE, he was probably a more badass RedFIELD special forces kind of guy). The Nobody enemies were actually an ancient race of mutants, buried under the castle and rediscovered by Spencer, whose bodies contained some sort of substance he used in his immortality projects (I actually never copped the Jojo reference, but they were basically primitive Pillarmen now that I think of it), with the T and G Virus being further developments of it, which is an idea later RE games revisted. The "underworld" of the castle was also likewise a giant living organism of some sort which had grown up through the floor and fused with the stones, hence things like the pulsating cathedral pillars. Lastly, the Dark Knight costume you unlock at the end wasn't a design for Sparda, but one for Tony or Paul if they opted to inherit the family and live for hundreds of years themselves.
-The only enemies wholly invented after the story change were the Sin/Death Scissors/Scythe enemies, the Sargassos and Nelo Angelo, and you can tell because there's no concept art for them. Nelo Angelo in particular was super late and literally uses Dante's same skeleton and animations almost entirely.
    DMC2:
-The major reason 2's development was such a mess was because Capcom had a huge reshuffle of the company in those years. While the same reshuffle allowed Clover Studios to be born, one relevant issue was that its Arcade Division was almost entirely absorbed into the other Dev offices (due to home consoles becoming more widespread). Capcom has/had multiple office buildings for their Divisions, so it was highly unlikely you would ever see people outside of your own building outside of a few scenarios. A good chunk of the Arcade Division were sitting around without anything to do for a few months after the reshuffle, asked for some sort of project to work on, and it seems an executive said "I dunno, do DMC2". The team had very little experience with the PS2 and the person placed as director wound up there almost by accident or without much thought. He didn't really have the chops for this sort of linear story driven game, but with little oversight from above the project just meandered for a long time regardless. Daigo Ikeno, I think, probably wound up on it because he'd been largely working with the Arcade division on stuff like Street Fighter. Bingo Morihashi had also just joined Capcom at the time and wound up in 2's team, though he largely just did item descriptions and text rather than actual writing.
-I think that director was also responsible for the odd Diesel clothing crossover because he'd worked with them in some capacity. Though it may have been another dev, I forget.
-The occult and mythological references are all Ikeno it seems, which explains the "Geryon" bike. There are also lots of Norse mythology, western alchemy, and biblical references in 2, but that extends into 3 and 5 also. They're honestly so deep and obscure I could spend forever talking about where I think he got them. Kamiya is also pretty knowledgeable on the occult and mythology going off DMC1, Bayonetta and Okami.
-The Nefasturris boss, going from concept art and the mismatched gameplay-to-cutscene model was originally slated to appear in the underground ruins area where he was akin to some sort of Byzantine statue of a bearded man (perhaps Jesus or one of the Apostles). He's easy to compare to Mundus, himself a classical statue with evil goo inside it, but also the Savior and DmC enemies. But they were presumably in such a rush to get the game done that they didn't have time to redo the gameplay model.
    DMC3:
-I could honestly go on forever about this one, so I'll just keep it to this: it heavily references both Lovecraft and the "Simon Necronomicon". Early on, Arkham's name was Heine (maaaaybe named after German poet Heinrich Heine) up to the early rehearsals of the cutscenes' mocap. Reuben Langdon uploaded some clips of these with Dan Southworth/Vergil saying his name. Some time after, it seemed like he was renamed Arkham in reference to H.P. Lovecraft, who is a lot more popular in Japan than most people know.
-I'm going to bet this was Ikeno again, but Lovecraft's fictional grimoire, the Necronomicon (maybe that's what Arkham's book is?) had a real world equivalent written in the 70s by anonymous occultist "Simon", which is actually a lot more about Babylonian and Sumerian mythology than Lovecraft's own work. While it's something of a prank, it was highly influential in pop culture, going on to inspire the "Necronomicon Exmortis" from The Evil Dead. In DMC3, it is likely the origin of the Babylonian references, notably the name of the Temen-ni-gru.
-Lastly, and you can even hear this in the Special Edition during his boss fight which means it was a on-the-day change in the recording booth, but Jester's name was originally Joker. And that was presumably changed because "Arkham" and "Joker" would be more recognizable as Batman references to an English speaking audience. Ofc Batman's "Arkham" is also a Lovecraft reference.

      DMC4:
-After solidly working through 2, 3 and 3 Special Edition, the team was burnt out. They knew early on that they wanted a new protagonist because working on even more Dante moves seemed nightmarish at the time, so Nero was conceived and would drastically change as development progressed, originally starting of as a much younger, Vergil-like character, to the guy he is now. Motivation was at an all time low, but then it got worse when the PS3 (which DMC4 was originally exclusive to) turned out to be a gigantic headache to develop for and may have wasted a year of dev time before they broke the exclusivity deal, switched to PC based development, then opted to port that version to either console down the line.
-Eventually, as the game finally started to take shape, the team started to get excited again. This is why 4 seems weirdly hamstrung; they essentially lost a load of dev time early and the release date wouldn't budge likely due to revenue issues. There are apparently some unfinished models in the game files, namely a version of Dante's Sin DT, which I have yet to see mined.
-An Easter Egg that only I seem to have noticed: the knight statue from the main hall of 1 is visible in the area of Fortuna castle with the four Gyro Blades you need to punch around. You can only see it by going to one of the doors back to the main hall and turning the camera so you can look through the window out into the courtyard.
-Nero's Red Queen is a weapon concept originally scrapped from another game, most likely Monster Hunter. Capcom archives unused concepts across games and digs through them for fresh ideas.
      DmC:
-Again, lots to say about this one. Most importantly, the (non-English speaking) Capcom supervisors kept telling Ninja Theory "it needs to look like a Western movie" when they would give feedback on early concepts. Ninja Theory didn't know exactly what this meant (hence the Brokeback Mountain joke in that one presentation, because it's a "Western" movie geddit) and kept throwing new concepts at the wall. I mean, all of the DMC games look like "Western movies" like The Matrix or Underworld or Blade, right? So what does "Western movie" even mean?? Eventually they went with a sort of gritty, street styled thing. Turns out, from a DMC5 interview with Itsuno and Matt, what Capcom meant was that it needed to look photorealistic, rendered like a "Western movie" like Iron Man or a Hollywood CGI laden thing. It wasn't the actual designs, it was the rendering style. Capcom considers all of the previous games slightly anime styled in how they're rendered, so they wanted something more real world (albeit with monsters and fantasy designs). Issues like this would prompt Capcom to stop licensing games to Western dev teams and create all of these barriers and to just hire bilingual westerners to work with them internally.
-A whoooole lot of DmC is VERY similar to Alice: Madness Returns to a degree that few people seem to notice. I won't even go into them here because it would take too long, but it goes all the way down to weapon FX and attack noises. Play them back to back and it will jump out at you.
-The reason it has the stupid name "DmC: Devil may Cry" is because they sent over lots of logo designs, one of which was a semi mirrored graffiti tag that said "DmC". A Capcom producer (I think I know which, but don't want to say) went and tried to copyright it as the game title, found out that you can't copyright three letters, then just slapped "Devil may Cry" on at the end to get around it. Thanks bro.
      DMC5:
-It's early days yet for any really interesting stories to come out that most people haven't already seen in the artbooks. Maybe the most interesting thing is just how closely some of Red Grave City resembles London. I actually had just moved here when 5 was out and wound up working in the area of Nero's first proper level (Mayfair), but you fight Nidhogg in the literal Borough Market, right down to a sign saying so shortly before his arena. It's probably the closest any DMC has come to looking like a real location (1 follows with the cathedral pulling from Sagrada Familia in Barcelona).

Hey, wow, thanks for the comment! Yeah, we are aware of the majority of it, as we conducted extensive research and assembled our own wiki for future videos.
As for Kamiya's comments, I think you mean the archive.org backup of the old Capcom.jp website, and if not, well, time to dig further!
      web.archive.org/web/20040630151157/www3.capcom.co.jp/devil/index2.html
In general, we haven't included a lot of things, as 4SE having Trish/Lady moves, 3 having some additional physics, and 5 having additional text files related to items that Nero/V/Dante picks up after defeating bosses, as we wanted for the video to have certain pace, so including everything would take even more time, recording sessions with VO and additional translations. As noted in a different comment, we are planning on doing an additional video with our process and thought on the project. Maybe, down the line, if we come back to the "History Of The Series" format we wanted to do for a long time, all those details you mentioned will be there, in the same high-quality packaging as this video.
But anyway, I'm glad that more people have that level of knowledge and depth about the series! It makes talking about it and discussing things even more interesting. Thank you!

As for Kamiya's comments, it was definitely a different site. It was a fan made Resident Evil forum, which I think was largely stuff like art, discussion and fanfic, nothing official endorsed by Capcom. The quotes from Kamiya were, iirc, responses from emails sent to him by the poster, copy pasted onto the forum afterwards sometime in the early 2000s. Then it hit me about 3 minutes in that Vash sounds totally different while reading from a script now, compared to his older videos, and I felt like a dumbass.
This was a great watch for sure, especially since the only other video on the topic felt like way more of a straight wiki reading than anything else. The editing was top notch; this is the kind of thing I think about doing when writing long scripts for DMC videos I'll never make cause I lack the time and equipment for it.
A few interesting bits of cut or changed content I felt were glanced over, (stuff like DMC1's early trailer showing Dante without a coat, as well as Griffon and the Sparda DT being used in the cathedral battle with Phantom, Arkham and Jester originally being named Hyne and Joker, and several unused voice lines and Nico files within 5's data), but god knows there was enough being juggled as is, and there were plenty of things on display that even I didn't know about. Seeing someone finally cover things like the DMC2 dev build, the DMC4 practise mode UI, and DMC5's Mixer implementation were especially nice, since there's barely any full documentation of them, even on places like TCRF.

Superb video; especially love hearing my mans Vash contribute his voice to this project. Very concise and well paced round up. To add to 22:07 "Terror of the Human Bombs!" is the title of episode 16 of Zambot 3 -- wherein the Gaizok kidnap humans, plant a bomb in their body, erase their memory and send them back into society to set them off and kill hundreds of humans at a time. If that sounds extremely dark for a 70's robot anime for kids... yes. It's a pretty horrific and gut wrenching show.

All these years later and I still find DmC not even that bad, it was a lot of fun to play and I'm mostly sad the Definitive Edition (which, according to many made the game feel even better to play considering it tones down some of the frustrating elements in combat) never came to PC. Sure, it was definitely a bit cringe but that's something I grew to like about it. It was also cool to hear a with a vocalist from my country providing the majority of the music as well. I still enjoy DmC honestly. Wasn't the best story wise and the devs attacking the fans sucked but I loved the combat and some of the elements and concepts of the game. I always like seeing when new takes are spun on things and reimagined in new ways. But ultimately it failing was good since that lead to is getting DMC5. That being said I whole heartedly would love to see a DmC 2 that starts an alt universe spin off series to the main games as apposed to being their replacement like the first one was supposed to be.

@alessandrobaggi6129 Dante could use Round Trip in Dmc1 with Alastor and Sparda. Dmc3 is the only game where Dante can't use it. Vergil in Dmc3 can use Round Trip both during his final boss battle and as a playable character in the special edition. Dmc3 Dante does have a move called sword pierce when using swordmaster style. He throws the sword straight forward instead of spinning it, and he can kick enemies while the sword is thrown.

one time looking through dmc1 concept art i saw art for a kraken boss. i haven't looked anything up about it but i assume it would've been put in mission 12 as the boss on the pirate ship, which makes way more sense than griffon. Im sure a kraken boss would have been annoying, but i doubt it could be worse than fighting griffon on that ship.
or maybe the game devs would've been evil and made that an underwater fight.
either way im sure this boss was probably originally for when the game was supposed to be resident evil, and didn't make it past the concept stage, as it wasn't even mentioned in this video.

The "why we don't have more DMC" is a tricky question. Main problem is that there's no one to work on it. Itsuno is busy with Dragon's Dogma 2, and a lot of key people left Capcom since the release of DMC5. Matt Walker (DMC5 producer), Hiroyuki Kobayashi (producer who worked on the series since the beginning), Ryota Suzuki (was a game planner), Ryosuke Yoshida (game planner) left as well. Only people, who worked on the series before and still at Capcom are Yoichiro Ikeda (lead planner) and Junya Kumabe, who was heavily advertised during 5SE release, as one of the new "leads" for Vergi's gameplay.

I think what's sad about DmC:DMC is that the concept art and trailer footage is genuinely interesting. The two Angel and Devil forms in the concept art for Dante are much more artistic than the simple white hair change DT he has in the finished game. I actually think a cigarette smoking depressed "I don't give a shit" Dante who was tortured as a child would've been unique. I'm not saying good, just unique. Then it would've been up to the execution to decide whether it would be good or not. Either way it would've been much more interesting to look back on in 2023, and definitely would've made the game stand out more rather than feeling like it's just a watered down version of the games we already have.

You know, because his hair does go white the more 'devilish ' he goes (unless this wasnt initially the plan, but even then, its still just a fun reference, not a flatout insult).
