- Stephen Colbert, host of CBS's "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," talks with moderator Ben Schwartz to celebrate his show. Topics include: why Colbert thinks of his career as "a series of happy accidents"; the way his approach to comedy has changed over the decades; his early goal to become a dramatic actor; how he developed his character on "The Colbert Report"; the reason he hesitated to become "The Late Show's" host; his relationship with "Late Show" predecessor David Letterman; the unique method used to test out comedy material; his "enjoyment" when dealing with guests that are "uncomfortable" on set; not sticking to pre-planned topics with celebrities; and why "famously difficult" guest Robert De Niro became his favorite interview of all time.
Seth Meyers last week and Stephen Colbert this week! Great interviews, the both of them!
I'm 72 and my sister and I have actually had a conversation about how there used to be the animosity between the late night hosts, and how much better it is now that all of them seem to get along and genuinely liked each other. It was so great to see the Seth Meyers interview last week and this one this week, thank you Paley center
And Conan, and David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel, and...
We Still have something to work with 😂✌️😏👍😂
... sorry, i asked jon stewart if he wanted to be added, and he doesn't recognize any of them, ... for legal purposes 🤣🤣🤣
Colbert, Meyers, Kimmel, Fallon and Oliver recorded a podcast together during the writer’s strike, called Strike Force Five [⚡️]. Ryan Reynolds advertised on it in the most hilarious way.
It takes them about two episodes to sorta get used to it, and it’s THE BEST podcast in so many ways!
I think you’ll love it , especially ‘the wives episode’ :)
I wish we had gotten this level of insight with the Myers interview. So well done.
We have an embarrassment of riches with so many fantastic late night hosts and their respect for one another
Has everyone forgotten Craig Ferguson?
Thank you to the Paley Center for all the shows you put on youtube!!
Sometimes the algorithm sends you a real treat. This is one of those times.
Almost 90min. of Colbert....I freaking loved it ❤
I know right, it's so cool to hear him talk about his career and his process for his work. I think Colbert is hands down the master at this format format, even better than Jon Stewart 😊
@@J.M.-nb4gw all the talkshow hosts have very different styles. But Colbert is the most intellectual one, and I love that.
I didn't even realize it was 90 minutes long until it had ended and I looked at my clock! What an enjoyable AND informative conversation! I didn't think it was possible to like Stephen Colbert even more than I already do, but my admiration for Stephen has just increased exponentially!
God, I love how deep Stephen's knowledge runs and how well he can use it. My Parks and Rec heart also appreciates Ben being there.
BRILLIANT interview with Colbert!
Awesome! I can listen to his stories for hours.
Thank you very very VERY much!!!! Wondrous interview. ..AND the ending story! I have been so deprived of an opportunity for a repeating snorting laugh fest complete with clenched stomach muscles and tears for so long! I want to testify that I AM HEALED❣❣❣
I’d have given anything to be there for this interview.
This is my kind of comedy and I absolutely love the behind the scene stories of how the comedy and shows we enjoy so much are actually created.
Stephen is the true example of a gentleman and a scholar.❤
and jester.
What a great interview! Love Colbert so much. Just a wonderful human being! You're funny too Ben! ❤
Schwartz is the perfect guy for Colbert. I could listen to these 2 guys forever.
I thought it was kinda boring.
Schwartz seems like I have a douchebag to me, don't really care for his schtick 🙄
Schwartz is annoying 😢
Awesome interview!!
Thanks Stephen & Ben!! 🙏🏽🤩😊
That was WONDERFUL! Thanks, guys.
This was delightful AND informative!
Another enjoyable and intelligent conversation 🌟
This is Great!
A clinic on "Yes and".
Love it!
I always appreciate what a great interview subject Ben Schwartz is--entertaining, empathetic, intelligent, always asking questions of the interviewer. This video proves he's also great as an interviewer.
That has to be the best thing I've watched on TH-cam....Sublime.
Just love seeing these two masters of comedy talk about Stephen Colbert's career and the craft while having a ball.
Schwartz is NOT any master of comedy, he's kind of a douchebag 🙄
Loving this! 2 quick witted intelligent gentleman! 🫶👏👏👏🫶👏👏👏👏
The dynamic here was what I kept measuring. Battle of wits. Stephen kept winning, what a heavyweight.
Ben was a great choice for a host for this one.
I loved hearing about Robert Deniro on Colbert after seeing him on Fallon this week. So spot on 😂
"What about that bone density, right?" 💀
What a sudden bullseye - piercing!
The hug showed just how much Colbert respects Ben, too. What a duo.
I am still in tears 🤣😂🤣😂
The most epic callback I've ever seen!
Stephen’s suit is gorgeous!!
Aubergine on oxblood, wow!
I haven't laughed as hard in my life as I did during that horse story. XD
Nailed the entrance ❤❤❤!!!!!!
Absolutely hilarious. The chemistry between the two of you was magical.
I loved this, it really shows a deep side of him that we don't get enough of on LSSC.
Masterful “yes, and…” throughout! So many intelligent callbacks. I can’t like this video enough. What a pleasure to watch.
What an amazing call back at the end! Ben is so good at this and would be a great late night host! 🤣
I LOVE THIS MAN . cant thank him enough for saving my sanity during these crazy times .
Privilege and responsibility. Beautiful. Yes have a good show. 🌺🌺🌺
Like Stephen, I re-read long-loved books, because it is like re-connecting with old friends. Robin Hood Retold; LotR; Sherlock Holmes mysteries; and so on! This is a wonderful conversation.
Hello Stephen, let's watch this from Brazil 🇧🇷
BTW, please keep making great content, hopefully, reason is going to win the election again
No interview of Colbert is complete without Evie. We needed Evie for several of these questions.
More Evie is always the correct way. She is a treasure.
I like that Jon and Evie are like the "break in case of emergency", of comedy advice. Stephen and Paul are probably in the same wavelength comedically so if one proposes chaos the other one is just going to agree inmediately, without thinking of the repercussions.
As a fan, there could not be a more loving expanded view of "backstage" than learning what else there is to it all. Such a delight, but also SO important to understand and keep it all!
Delightful to watch and listen to these two play together & off of each other-seems like a good time was had by all :)
Ben Schwartz would make an excellent late night host.
Thank you for sharing these!
Put two improv pros on stage together, you’re going to get good stuff.
And now we know who should follow Stephen if he ever retires ( in 40 years I hope)
True Legend! ❤
Colbert is a BOSS! What an entrance!💋
I need Stephen to take the Colbert Questionaire.
Apples, fine we get it. Peanut Butter does just fine on a Spoon!
Also, what number are you thinking of?!
Barbara Streisand got him to admit it is between one and a hundred, and that it is an odd number. Plus, the only time he responded something other than "No," was when the answer was 3 (to which he responded, "Interesting.")
A peanut butter and marmalade sandwich is normal. But peanut butter and apple butter sounds redundant, and perhaps even hazardous.
Amazing
This was a great interview of Stephen Colbert by Sonic the Hedgehog.
True late night royalty. Ben, of course, also nailing it. 🎉
Oh this was one for the ages, wow. So many great stories and interactions and then the wheeze-laugh stories then .....
"Hey, hey. What about that bone density, right?" One super-man-hug later: amazing eye contact and smiles, a pointing gesture "You." a wag of the finger, "Don't make me love you" and *beautiful* smiles. Then wrapped up and tied with a bow.
My mom was a teacher's assistant at Sunday school. She used a LOT of a hairspray called Final Net. (I'm going somewhere with this, I swear) It's very sticky. After several weeks one of the 2nd graders came up to her and said "why doesn't your hair move". I guess it had been bothering him and he needed to know. Kids have no filters. I love that.
Pure gold! Loved it, too, as all the comments show! Wow. Steven unplugged.
I totally thought you guys were gonna do a running chest bump, lol. I never even thought about Dirty Dancing. 👏😄🎵 Update: Aaaaaand... Full circle... Running chest bump! Love it! I'd call that a call back, lol. Bravo, guys!! 👏😂👏🤣👏😆
Great interview.
I'd bet a million dollars that Stephen Colbert is the Grandson of the famous Robert Cummings from the My Living Doll Tv show... his voice is even the same! Amazing...
I'd forgotten that theme song! Remember it really well, now that he mentioned it, and they sang it together. That was great.
Thank you algorithm~! This one is definitely a winner~!
$20 for a modern floppy drive with usb?? I just checked Amazon, that is nuts.
This kid is good with the call backs
Tbh this is my first time watching Ben and I have to admit my stomach muscles are sore from laughing!! Great show!
Great way to send a Saturday afternoon ❤love both of these glorious clowns
Schwartz is such a good listener. I'm learning so much at how to be better at it too.
That last question had me laughing so hard my stomach hurt.
I love Stephen! He is just sooooo funny! Love his horse story! Where can we get a copy of that skit?
20:39
You’re gonna hear electric music solid walls of sound
Love the discussion on the SATs... kids need to hear it. I scored 500/500 and years later in the top 3% of the LSAT and got into all but one of the top law schools I applied to. People in my classes throughout college asked me to tutor them -- would they have had they known my SAT scores? Yeah, didn't have a good day on the day of the SAT and since I thought I wasn't going to college, I didn't retake it. Prepped for the LSAT, like my friends prepped for the SATs, to get rid of test day nerves. By then, however, I'd learned via college tests how to calm myself before a test and to ignore the nervous energy around me. I think this is one of the biggest keys to test taking: being calm enough to allow what you know to come to you.
And the shoes....so shiny!!!!!!!!
That was amazing!
That made me so happy! When he referenced a day in the life❤, if you know you know
Ben I love your energy. Very thoughtful questions!
late show host all should be advisors to president they get pop culture
Having late show host advising current presidents is better than when we had the evangelical right moral majority preachers "counseling" former presidents.
This was such an entertaining show to watch!!
A man for Our Time.
Stephen Colbert is my American Treasure ❤❤. That’s all I’m gonna say.
We did JB when I was a kid - I was one of the kids, in fact, all of whom naturally died! I love that play!
These two are so good together
Shut up, Ben and let him talk..The interview is about him not you.
Awesome interview ❤
stephen to me is the modern version of dick cavett. i discovered dick recently and am just totally in love. they’re both SO empathetic and completely not afraid of being vulnerable and showing emotion. in our time, no one in show business does this, unless it’s a set up. just world class guys ❤ jack paar is right up there with them.
Thank you Paley Center
Howling at the end. Thank you. Awesome
This is an enormous clusterfuck and I absolutely love it.
the running on stage, i recently saw a phil silvers doc that said that on the sgt. bilko show every entrance was explosive. i'm old enough to remember when the show was around but too young to recall much more than a scene here and there. but i do remember steve allen talking about fink university and the fightin' ferns (schmock! schmock!). the only problem is i think i must be the only person alive who still does. the old tonight show with johnny carson started at 11:15 pm after the local news and went til 1:30 am. there was an ad for hawaiian fruit punch in the early shows that ran maybe 3 or 4 times a night. i can't find it on the internet but, boy, i would love to see it again. "got flavor cherry, pineapple, orange" is in my head forever, though.
the prodigal son story got my eyes misty, no idea why
Iron Man vibes at the entrance 😂
Such a genuinely good human
You are right.I'm enjoying this tremendously
Ben with the Angelfire reference
I haven't left that hard for a long one time.I needed that
Ben Schwartz reminds me of John Mulaney, in a speech mannerism way, and sometimes also in humour style.
Good stuff.
Wish it had been that kind of more improvised atmosphere when Conan did Paley Centre
Covid busted up Stephen's appendix! He had covid a month earlier and my sister, who's a nurse, said, "he'd better watch out for appendicitis for the next 6 months." She'd seen it happen again and again, people showing up with a burst appendix in the emergency room who'd recently had covid.
So funny, and I learned some stuff too! :-)
Awesome interview love it
What about that bone density
Having watched both the Seth Meyers episode and this one, gotta say that Meyers and Samberg were a lot more chaotic and entertaining!
0:42 Perfect Walk On!
Stephen busting out the CO$ lingo... "out Ethics; use the tech...it works" lols😂
Wow that’s like 108,000 people at that crowd!
