So that is some merit to the critique in this case, since the apse faces east at St Michael's Abbey.

It’s rather a tradition in Rome or a few parts of Italy alone than that it is widespread throughout the world. They would still put big candles Between the celebrant and the faithful so they wouldn’t be distracted by his face

However this does not invalidate Mass facing the people, St. Michaels Abbey has retained the venerable tradition of having altars freestanding and not against the wall.

It's a shame that that altar will rarely, if ever, be used to say the Mass that St Norbert himself would have recognized. Sad.
At least the side chapels will. The Norbertines frequently offer the traditional mass in private.
