The word "handheld" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here... the thing about these PC handhelds is that they need to realize that a huge part of the novelty of a handheld is the form factor. A glorified tablet with attached controllers being marketed as a handheld is comical.
I have to imagine it's tough for some of these companies bc now they're not just competing with Valve but also MSI, ASUS, and Lenovo so they have to find ways to differentiate themselves. I think this option is interesting but I would say it's someone that wants a laptop first. It can transform into a gaming machine, sure, but I wouldn't call it a dedicated gaming machine, like the others.
This is still, in my opinion, a definitively handheld device. Despite it being uncomfortable to use handheld, the fact you can use it handheld with both or one hand makes it a handheld. The reason I say that is because unlike a desktop computer and laptop you cannot carry it and use it fully at the same time, while the onexplayer can be fully used while carrying it. Like seriously try to use a laptop with both hands while carrying it. This is a trick setup because you can't unless you have a third arm or really long and extremely opposable thumbs. The fact you call this a glorified tablet, something that is definitively handheld should just tell you that it's still a handheld. Me saying all this isn't saying anything on its comfort while using handheld. My point is an uncomfortable handheld is still a handheld, especially compared to non handheld equivalent equipment like a laptop.
@@FanTheDeck Right, they have to find their edge in order to be a player. I can see what this OneXPlayer model is going for, but it runs the risk of alienating the audiences that it's aiming for by trying to be two different form factors in the same package.
@@emerson-biggons7078There has to be a point where just because it CAN be held in two hands doesn't make it a handheld and I think this device is past that point. What's the point in calling it a handheld if it's uncomfortable, as ya know... you then wouldn't use it handheld... The Legion Go was already pushing the limits of weight and size of a handheld imo, but I still love my Legion Go. Again, this is past the point of where I'd call it an actual handheld, but instead a portable gaming device, which is very different. Calling this a handheld is like calling the box your PC came in a chair because you can sit on it. I like the idea of this device, but it needs more time in the oven and considerably better specs to actually stand out (at least for me).
@@LPcrazy_88 I completely disagree. Unlike the box your PC came with, this was designed as and does function completely as a handheld even if it's not comfortable as one. This is more comparable to really shitty gamer chairs, they are still chairs, you can still sit in them but they are very uncomfortable and not designed for ergonomics. It is literally a handheld until it is impossible to use while handheld. Impracticality and discomfort do not decide if it's a handheld or not. The threshold that makes a handheld, in my opinion, is if you can completely operate the device while it's in at least both hands. This device arguably meets that requirement. But if you aren't convinced here is a definition I looked up and I still think this qualifies: "designed to be operated while being held in the hand" from Merriam Webster. This device is designed to be at least held and operated at the same time. No different than an iPad/tablet with a telescopic controller attached.
The Screen is fantastic, just the APU scares me, honestly Intel needs to discount these ARC APU's on first run to get them into people's hands. I have a surface pro with Iris XE graphics that plays just fine but the battery life is worse than my steam deck.
@@AdmiralBison I have the one player 1s still good but it's a mess when it comes to drivers optimisations many games just crash and are unplayable. Am done with Intel igpus am intending to get one player 2 pro with the 7840u instead
DRAM-Less cache for the m.2 installed in the Claw. As far as I know, only 2280 form factor m.2's are the only ones with DRAM cache SSDs, like your high end Samsung Pros, etc.
I would buy it instantly if it had the latest AMD APU. I own a GPD G1 and it would work great with that Oculink port. I owned an Intel ARC A770 equipped PC for almost a year and it was a bad experience for me. VR was big no and any game that wasn't in the top 20 popular games had performance issues. I knew old games would have issues and I was fine with that but some games that were new also had really bad performance at launch for a while like Sonic Frontiers. Starfield couldn't even open for a while and when they did release a driver for it the game would crash for most players after 30min to an hour. If you're a streamer playing popular games it's mostly fine but for everyone else I would highly recommend a different GPU.
I hate that most companies set the analog sticks offset! Im so glad the steam deck didnt do offset sticks & added both the trackpads too. I also dont like the idea of removable controllers as they never feel stable & are always wonky. Glad theres more competition though its always good to see.
What resolution were the performance numbers achieved at? The X1 has a much higher resolution screen than the Ally and with the b roll that was shown they're obviously running at different aspect ratios.
All at 720p (despite the aspect ratio). Presets matched across devices but I didn't always go with Low preset. E.g. Batman Arkham Knight is on High across all tests
Marketing this thing as a handheld was a mistake. It should instead be advertised as a much more powerful surface go. If it had decent pen support, I could see this thing being a compelling choice for some college students, as it could be used to take notes in class and as a laptop in a pinch, but also as an ultra portable gaming system.
I like the idea, got the I7 on the first 72 hours promo which was a great deal. But I dropped my backing around 8 days in. The reason being is what we just saw in this video and other reasons. Mainly they don't seem to know what they are doing well or they simply don't care, both bad signs for me. 1. Reviewers didn't get the devices well ahead for a device that should be ready since its shipping in March. 2. Them covering the right intake with their back cover (the cover being essential for the usage of the device) just doesn't make much sense to me even if that intake was for looks or whatever. 3. When I saw the bag it came with and how bad and cheap it looked (like a 5 dollars AliExpress bag) and how it doesn't even have a place for the charger. Just didn't feel fitting if the 1K+ device. 4. The USBc charging port is right ontop of the left controller, can't imagine it would be comfortable to play in handheld while plugged in. 5. Going with intel is and was a very odd choice for a handheld but not really a deal breaker but it combined with the other issues made me reconsider. I really hope this company works more on their designs and engineering as well as their marketing as they have some nice ideas and I will be looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.
I almost bought one, glad I didn't. Even if future driver updates can help Intel close the performance per watt gap to AMD, by then thunderbolt 5 will be out making Oculink obsolete. By then I hope there would be other 11" devices on the market, like the rumored Surface Pro 11"
And if you wait more the. Thunderbolt 6 will be out and making 5 obsolete!!! Lol In that way best wait 10 years to have the best device at the market… That’s not the way it should see. You buy this, in 2 or 3 years of Thunderbolt 5 or whatever new tech or gx cards cames out, you SELL IT and buy the new one, as simply of that lol, or keep it and buy the new one. With this devices if you wait even 6 months it will be a new one more powerfull, so best enjoy it whatever you buy.
@@ramontrevino3170 Thunderbolt 5 is coming out this spring, probably in less than 3 months. It will take longer for Intel to release optimized drivers. Additionally, Oculink will be a dead-end technology, while Thunderbolt continues to move forward. In the mean time, AMD powered portables will get much better performance per watt.
The pro is great I have the Evangelion version. Definitely one of the best 7840u devices out there. Looking forward to seeing how the X1 stacks up to the competition.
In a bunch of these tests you can see the iGPU pinned at 90%+ and the CPU less than 70%. Intel really messed up by inflating the costs of these chipsets by stuffing loads of cores that simply won't get used in gaming.
No thanks. I was excited at first, but now, seeing the thickness and lack of true portability. I'll stick with the Legion Go. I would prefer a gaming laptop over this device.
Intel still hasn't fixed the Achilles heel of their APUs/iGPUs - poor performance at very low wattage, having good performance pet watt is a must have if you want to play games on battery, which is the entire point of a handheld, being untethered. Sad that AMD has basically no competition with the iGPU business when it comes to handhelds
I already back mine within the 72 hours so iget the free keyboard, bought the 155 2tb and 32gb ram, Yeah it can be called a handheld, that's what I'm going to use it for 90% of the time, and the other 10% a laptop when I'm at school
I really like this design but i am not sure how much i trust onexplayer the laptop side of the business has plenty of compliants about them basically just abandoning previous devices i also have zero reference for they quality
I think this is a stupid handheld, BUT actually very appealing as the only less than 13 inch 2 in 1 laptop with a cpu better than a pentium there are literally no other options for some reason every single small sized laptop/tablet has a celeron or pentium, i really hope more companies try smaller laptops capable of gaming id love a 12 inch 2 in 1 laptop even if it only had like a 3rd gen ryzen 3 sadly no products like that exist for some reason if you want a ryzen 3 or i3 and above the only options are 13+ inches
This is a good device, it's a shame that it's being hampered by Intel. Intel has a crap ton of work to do if it really wants to compete with AMD, because the latest benchmarks although not surprising are still disappointing.
What a weird decision to send out units with a weaker apu in it... They can say what they want but it simply has fewer cores and a weaker gpu. But people are now going to see these performance numbers and it will look bad. I hope the version with 155h will actually perform better, otherwise that's an oof...
these detachable keyboard laptop devices have never once appealed to me. it’s one thing to have a tablet with a keyboard, but calling this thing a laptop is a gimmick. this design is less portable than a laptop

Right, they have to find their edge in order to be a player.
At 11:35 How do you compare onex1 @28w vs rog ally @18w? Thats weird
because Intel does even worse at lower watts.
@@AdmiralBison I have the one player 1s still good but it's a mess when it comes to drivers optimisations many games just crash and are unplayable. Am done with Intel igpus am intending to get one player 2 pro with the 7840u instead
I was looking at the MSI claw website and all the models say “w/o DRAM”. What’s that mean?
Maybe there's sodimm slots that would be a game changer
DRAM-Less cache for the m.2 installed in the Claw. As far as I know, only 2280 form factor m.2's are the only ones with DRAM cache SSDs, like your high end Samsung Pros, etc.
can i connect a mouse
Hello. what do you think about making a drawing? I want to see the drawing program on it. is it good or not? OneXPlayer X1
I really like it and I think I'm gonna have to get one to replace my suface book.
hey Rich, how does it run in terms of noise with a AAA game?
The problem is Intel. Power wattage hungry chips, and they run hot.
What game at 7:00?
Did the benchmarks run at the same resolution?
Size!! Laptop > Tablet > Handheld - surely this is a tablet!
I hate that most companies set the analog sticks offset! Im so glad the steam deck didnt do offset sticks & added both the trackpads too. I also dont like the idea of removable controllers as they never feel stable & are always wonky. Glad theres more competition though its always good to see.
I agree i like playstation analog set
what was that zombie word game you were playing
typing of the dead
What resolution were the performance numbers achieved at? The X1 has a much higher resolution screen than the Ally and with the b roll that was shown they're obviously running at different aspect ratios.
All at 720p (despite the aspect ratio). Presets matched across devices but I didn't always go with Low preset. E.g. Batman Arkham Knight is on High across all tests
@@FanTheDeck gotcha, thanks for that
This is an interesting concept. I’m not sure it’s for me but it’s a cool innovation that may lead to better refinements or better innovation.
I was going to get a laptop, but this is a much better option, especially when paired with their eGPU. Take my money! 💰 🤑
Lol
In that way best wait 10 years to have the best device at the market…
That’s not the way it should see.
I like the sound of 3 in 1.
What zombie game were you playing.Typing in the words as bullets looked cool
Typing of the Dead 😎
Did you get the oxp2pro? Wonder how much better it might be. I purchased the Eva Edition last summer. This one seems interesting for a Windows Tablet.
Hmm I have the OXP2, not the OXP2 Pro. What do you think of the Pro? Yeah as a 3-in-1, this is really interesting.
The pro is great I have the Evangelion version. Definitely one of the best 7840u devices out there. Looking forward to seeing how the X1 stacks up to the competition.
Straight outta China scares me. Fine for cheap retro hamdhelds, but I need support for these quite expensive devices
This review unit (protoype) only works for watch the design, size etc.
Form factor is interesting, but hardly can call it handheld. More like mini laptop/tablet with attachable controllers. But yeah, idea is nice
yes, but whats the name of that zombie game?
Typing of the Dead 😎
In a bunch of these tests you can see the iGPU pinned at 90%+ and the CPU less than 70%. Intel really messed up by inflating the costs of these chipsets by stuffing loads of cores that simply won't get used in gaming.
Those "consoles" are getting too similar. But im happy that handheld market is growing, maybe some day we'll get something that is worth the wait
Sad that AMD has basically no competition with the iGPU business when it comes to handhelds
..and you can place it on your desk in front of your main machine to play…oh, wait…
Isnt the MSI Claw the first?
I smell a meme where AMD 8000 series APU is sneaking up behind Intel APUs only looking at blocking attacks from AMD 7000 APUs.
I miss the 3:2 aspect ratio
I completely forgot about this re the surface pro!
So... Its just a laptop
With joycon rails
It's a laptop. Tablet. Handheld.
I already back mine within the 72 hours so iget the free keyboard, bought the 155 2tb and 32gb ram, Yeah it can be called a handheld, that's what I'm going to use it for 90% of the time, and the other 10% a laptop when I'm at school
At that cost I might as well get an actual laptop or gpd win max 2
This handlaptop 😂😂😂
Arc drivers are still not ready for prime time
Fair, but I would consider them passable for an enthusiast. They don't mind tweaking things and this channel is more towards enthusiast
I’m ok with the steam deck but that handheld do look ok 👌 but it’s too big looking 👀
I really like this design but i am not sure how much i trust onexplayer the laptop side of the business has plenty of compliants about them basically just abandoning previous devices i also have zero reference for they quality
This would be much more attractive with an AMD APU, the Intel Arc iGPU is underperforming.
hi, can you test gaming using rtx 4080 by oculink?
🔥🔥🔥
what is game you play typing game zombie??
I think this is a stupid handheld, BUT actually very appealing as the only less than 13 inch 2 in 1 laptop with a cpu better than a pentium there are literally no other options for some reason every single small sized laptop/tablet has a celeron or pentium, i really hope more companies try smaller laptops capable of gaming id love a 12 inch 2 in 1 laptop even if it only had like a 3rd gen ryzen 3 sadly no products like that exist for some reason if you want a ryzen 3 or i3 and above the only options are 13+ inches
Wow... At higher TDP it has worse performance than Z1 extreme? And the pricing is insane if you take into account the customs duty :(
Its perfect for playing starcraft 2 on battery.
Perfect for mobile rts
7 inch is too small for many 3A games. At least 8inch for all future handheld please
Would’ve been better with AMD APU… I’ll stick with my 6800u OXP2.
You know what. It’s actually better than play station portal 💀atleast
This is a good device, it's a shame that it's being hampered by Intel.
Intel has a crap ton of work to do if it really wants to compete with AMD, because the latest benchmarks although not surprising are still disappointing.
... It starts at nearly $1,000...
Seems too half-baked at this price-point. Good luck to the beta testers but I think this is a case of trying to run before they can walk.
What a weird decision to send out units with a weaker apu in it... They can say what they want but it simply has fewer cores and a weaker gpu. But people are now going to see these performance numbers and it will look bad. I hope the version with 155h will actually perform better, otherwise that's an oof...
this is basically a Nintendo switch/ Microsoft surface but for pc gaming
looks interesting but unfortunate that they went with intel
No point in purchasing a new gaming handheld until AMD release RDNA 4.0 APU's, most likely 2025. So enjoy what you have now!
these detachable keyboard laptop devices have never once appealed to me.
it’s one thing to have a tablet with a keyboard, but calling this thing a laptop is a gimmick. this design is less portable than a laptop
