  • Hi everyone! This one took a while, but I finally got it out. Welcome to the second part of my first studio retrospective where I'm taking a look at Hanna-Barbera Productions from 1970 through 1979! This video is a little bit of history, some anecdotes, a lot of cartoons, and whatever else I felt fit the topic, so I hope you enjoy!

    Holy cow. I guess I never realized that Hoyt Curtin did almost ALL of the music for Hanna-Barbera. That would make him one of the most prolific composers of television music of all time. My favorite of his will always be the Super Friends theme, though.

    8:15 Worth mentioning that getting Keye Luke for Charlie Chan was a fantastic catch for H-B, as he was arguably the most important Chinese actor in Hollywood throughout the 1930s and 40s and remained enormously popular for decades thereafter, working right up until 1990 and dying in January of 1991. His filmography is amazing to look through and as a founding member of the Screen Actors' Guild he did a lot to start breaking down the racial prejudices he spent his early career laboring under. Guy's a legend in Hollywood history, and he showed up in all sorts of films, shows, and voice acting - including a previous role as Brak in Space Ghost.
    Most relevant to Chan Clan show, he was Number One Son to Warner Oland's Charlie in seven films, and it would have been eight if Oland hadn't died, leaving the studio to rewrite the last film into Mister Moto at Ringside, with Keye playing opposite Peter Lorre's Moto. Finally playing Chan Senior must have been an interesting experience for him, and probably a bit of an homage to Oland (who he got along very well with, as well as his frequent comedic partner Manton "Birmingham" Moreland) - it had been over 20 years since he'd last played as Lee Chan.
    He also has some uncredited VA credits in the later Scooby and Scrappy show, voiced Genju in the Sunfire episode of Spider-Man and His Aamazing Friends, worked on a couple of episodes of both Thundarr and the original Jonny Quest, and did VA work for 13 episodes of the 1983 Alvin & Chipmunks show. He voiced Zoltar in every episode of Battle of the Planets.

      @richmcgee434 Digging deeper into some of these performers' histories and filmographies is definitely something I'd like to do at some point, because there were so many interesting and important people involved with animation through the ages. • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dr.animaction Keye Luke would be hard. They did a whole biopic on his life and career back in the 2010s and it still couldn't touch on everything. He and Mantan Moreland are 100% why I remain an apologist for the Chan films - yes, yellowface is obviously bad and the racial stereotypes hurt, but two of the biggest non-white talents in Hollywood got major exposure through those films for all their faults. And Keye Luke did get his back when they let him do the remake of Mister Wong in Chinatown, taking the gross performance Boris Karloff had done with character and showing him (and the world) how to do it right, so there's that. He likely wouldn't have gotten that role without his time as Number One Son.

    • @dr.animaction
      @dr.animaction  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @richmcgee434 Well I certainly wouldn't do any documentary level examinations (except for my normal quasi-documentary style), but I'd still like to take on the project with a focus on their work specifically in animation!

      @richmcgee434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dr.animaction Maybe you could figure out which characters he voiced on the ones where he wasn't given a specific credit. There's a few of those, presumably all bit parts.
      I'll say one thing for him, he sure didn't get an ego about what parts he'd take. He did small appearances on random TV shows and minor VA jobs as happily as feature films or important parts like Master Po on Kung Fu. That show was huge back in the 70s, what with the martial arts craze - although it's yet more yellowfacing, something Keye seems to have been cursed to run into even in his later years.

    • @TenNoZeorymer72
      @TenNoZeorymer72 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richmcgee434 Funny how that worked. The martial arts craze heavily fueled by Bruce Lee, who got his first American role as Kato in the 60s Green Hornet. A role that Keye Luke played himself in the '39-'41 Universal film serials. Up here in the Seattle area, he was known more with his art before leaving for Hollywood to work on the murals at Grauman's Theatre.

    5:54 Civil War era ghost?? Someone get the Doc a history book! LOL
    I always felt that Superfriends '73 was part Scooby-Doo and a bridge from the Filmation JLA shows from the '60s. Why else get Ted Knight to do the VO? Don't seem to remember why they couldn't get Adam West and Burt Ward to do SF'73 after they had done Filmation's first Batman, unless there was a contract conflict since they would come back for The New Adventures of Batman.
    C.H.O.M.P.S. was a personal favorite as a kid. It had Wesley Eure from "Land of the Lost" and Valerie Bertinelli from "One Day at a Time" and involved a robotic dog. Being the huge "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman" fan (which meant that I wanted a bionic German Shepherd like Max...still do as a matter of fact!), C.H.O.M.P.S. was right up my alley.

    3:50 The Josie comic had swapped out Pepper for Val in 1969, and by 1970 the group was "on tour" all over the planet with the lineup of main characters that the cartoon used. The same years also saw Pepper's boyfriend Socrates ("Sock") vanish and Josie's original boyfriend Albert replaced with Alan, who was a folk singer she bumped into and joined up for the tour.
    You've also inverted Alan (blonde) and Alexander (black-haired like his sister). Alan is effectively the roadie and plays a Fred-like role as well as looking like him, while Alexander is the ludicrously cowardly manager. In the comics he's a bit less chicken-hearted and even more inept as a manager, since his wealthy father won't front him any money for the band so he's always cutting corners to save money. Note that the comic originally had Alexander drooling over Josie (even back when she was with Albert) the same way Alexandra stalks and sex-pests Alan, making for an awkward jealous mess all around. Thankfully the cartoon ditched that altogether - having two stalkers in the cast would have made the show completely unwatchable.
    And before you ask, I actually did a paper in college on the comic and shows, mostly as a lark - hence the absurd level of trivia on the subject. It was a lot harder looking this stuff up back in 1984 than it is these days. :)

    If not becoming a major empire to compete with Disney? Taft could've bought Worldvision Enterprise in the early 60's to merge with that company, before buying Hanna Barbera they've could've also bought Screen Gems from Sony in the early 80's to compete with Warner Brothers instead. However if they did Taft could've been bought by Turner, then Turner would have Worldvision New Line Cinema and Castle Rock to release darker movies under any of those 3 banners. That's another thought if Hanna Barbara doesn't want to become a distributor company to create another division distributaring company.

    That Australian animation studio did an incredibly poor job on that Lost in Soace tv animation special. It was if they never watched an episode of the clsssic series!

    Hypothesis: Josie and the Pussycats would have taken off and wound up as big as Scooby Doo *if* they'd left Alexandra out entirely. They couldn't owing to the licensing agreement, but they didn't just include her, they took her jealousy and creepy stalking that pre-existed in the comics and dialed them up to eleven. She went from being pretty unlikeable already to being so consistently obnoxious and useless that her presence drags the whole show down, and that's why neither the initial show nor the reboot caught on. They even removed one of her few interesting traits from the comic - Sebastian the cat was a reincarnated ancestor of hers who'd been a Salem warlock and she could use magic while holding him, although some snag always made her schemes go awry. Very, very Sabrina-esque (which is why the comic downplayed it over time) but it was certainly better than "most petty and spiteful human being that ever lived" as character traits go.
    Other than that the show had everything going for it the original Scooby did - attractive character designs with distinct personalities, a solid soundtrack, innovative storylines, plenty of location changes form episode to episode. Josie could have and should have been that second lightning strike H-B spent the whole decade looking for. But nope, they just had to make Alexandra intolerable. The only other show I can think of that self-sabotaged as badly with one hateful character was Fantastic Voyage. Even Doctor Smith on Lost In Space had the occasional redeeming moment, few as they were.

      @richmcgee434 It's always been interesting to me how a single character or component in an otherwise very fun and interesting property can drag the whole thing down. That would probably be a great topic for a list or Randimated Thoughts video though!

      @@dr.animaction I nominate Doctor Smith of Lost In Space. Busby Birdwell of Fantastic Voyage is already and obvious one. I suspect many "mascot" characters would make other folks' lists as well. Must admit I still wonder what Jonny Quest would have been like with a much less-used monkey instead of Bandit eating up a few minutes every episode. :)

      The only saving grace for Alexandra was that she was voiced by Sherry Alberoni. Although almost all her roles sounded similar (Alexandra, Wendy from Superfriends '73, Bo from Mighty Orbots), she owned the personality (strong female protagonist/antagonist).
      I forgot about her connection to magic when holding Sebastian. They left it out for so long before bringing it back in the recent revamp. Would have made for great crossovers not only between the Cabots and the Lodges in being the top financial powerhouse in Riverdale but bring Sabrina back to her roots instead of the more well known standalone. I'll have to look into back issues to see if there was ever a "Cats Night Out" where Salem and Sebastian talk about their issues and how modern witches are compared to past ones.

    I wish that Australian ANIMATION STUDIO DID A BETTER JOB WITH THE LOST IN SPACE SUPERCADE MOVIE. tHE Only recognizable character was dr Smiith. They turned the Jupiter 2 into a rocket ship. The Robot was badly drawn and animated. It was as if the animators had never seen an episode of the series.

      @3dartistguy My guess is they were going for cheap and fast, and it showed in the final product.

      @@dr.animaction I’ve seen their early preproduction sketches which looked more accurate to the classic series which greatly contrasted with the final product..If anything Josie a d the pussycats in outer space was a lot closer to the original series. But I’m glad Hanna Barbara ditched that Eric porter animation studio. Obviously someone at HB saw the extremely poor quality animation they were producing.

      @3dartistguy There was definitely an increase in quality when H-B opened their own branch in Australia instead of outsourcing.

      @@dr.animactionthere must have been especially with the debut of the all new Superfriends in 1977. Even as a child, I noticed the upgrade in animation quality from their earlier attempt at Superfriends in the early 1970s with Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog which must have been done by that Eric Porter studio. How they got contracted to do any animation is beyond me.
