    I don't know why, but I was always terrible at bourrees, so this was perfect! Thanks so much Katie ! Thinking of the back foot works like a miracle

    Thank you so much! This video is awesome! I've been en pointe for about a month now, and in class I tried to remember leading with the back foot when doing bourres, and my teacher complimented me on them! Thank you!

    my teacher calls it couru, so you won't confuse it with pas de bourrees. Does your feet have to be tight together when you go sideways? Because I always keep it in tight fifth but when I watch ballets their legs are slightly separated.
    Katy! Can you teach us efface and ecarte lines? I always get confused because with efface and ecarte there can be so many combinations, I think there's even devon and derriere

    • @tessseidler4445
      @tessseidler4445 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      what's efface and ecarte? I'm only familiar with devon are derriere.

    im really struggling to do releves on one foot on pointe. any advice? x

    • @tessseidler4445
      @tessseidler4445 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      try strengthening your ankles by doing lots of releves and balances in flat shoes. And when I'm doing them on pointe I just try to pull up a lot more than I think I need to and I pretend that the ground is pushing up below my heel rather than something pulling me up. hope that makes sense!

    • @emmaamakasu1321
      @emmaamakasu1321 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      When you do chaines, you have to think about getting onto your front foot by kicking off the back foot. Then, try to squeeze your legs in to a turned out first. Otherwise, you may start going backwards.

    So I'm VERY hyperextended with high arches on pointe, and when I bouree I just can't seem to give it that smooth/fluid look. I tend to lock my ankles when I'm on pointe, which helps with hops but not bourees. I am Snow in Nutcracker this year, and really need to improve my bourees. Tips?

    Of all the positions and maneuvers in ballet, this one just makes me laugh! Especially when there is intense music with it. Was this maneuver "invented" or placed in ballet for: sneaky, silly, or even a suggestion of inexperience? I am new to this and look forward to taking a special someone to see Swan Lake and Nutcracker.

    Hi Katie!! Great video as always 😊... I have a question for your Q&A - I have struggled with a very tense/stiff neck when I dance for some time - I think it stems from my desire to be "pulled up". How can I separate this sensation of engaged, pulled up muscles in my lower body but keep a relaxed, elegant neck/upper body? Thanks so much in advance! Xx

    • @izzbonito
      @izzbonito 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same problem and would love for Kathryn to do a video on it. I try to pull up and use my head and neck a lot, but it always looks so stiff. I really need help because it is such a difficult habit to break. I even have odd neck muscles from it. :(

    I turn 19 next month and am losing weight (can't do pointe at my weight). I do want to do ballet, but I wonder how hard it will be. I know I won't pointe for a few years. I had rheaumatoid arthritis in my knees and ankle (in remission for a couple of years) and my joints have some damage but obviously will hurt less when I hit my goal weight. I can do first position but without straightening my back (hurts knees and legs when I do). I don't wan to be a professional but I'd be satisfied with being able to do pointe. I have heard of one male dancer who was born with a very mild club foot. How hard will it be for me? I know anything is attainable. Anything I need to know or you would want me to know.

    Hi Katie! I want to pursue dance as a career (not necessarily ballet, though.) Do you think majoring in dance through a big dance school (like Boston Conservatory, UA, or Cornish) is necessary to succeed in the field or do you think minoring is a safer option? Also, when you were at NYCB did you know a lot of people who went to college for dance (directors and choreographers too) or was it unheard of? Thanks love!

    Hi Katie, I'm a dance student who, with inflexible ankles a flat instep and low arches, really struggles with pointe work. I've been told by several fitters and teachers that my muscles are strong and I'm definitely on my box but I'm still insecure with the aesthetic. When you were in NYCB did you see more people with "banana" feet? Do people like me not end up in companies? And if there are people like me in the company, how did they achieve the line of the leg/foot?

    • @gimmepugs6826
      @gimmepugs6826 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make the best out of what you have. If your feet aren't your greatest feature, work on them so that they'll improve, but also, learn to accentuate the better parts of you, draw their eyes away from your feet. :)

      Annaliese Stump Not a professional AT all, nor do I know much about physio yet, but I've found doing plies, or even just standing in parallel, really focusing on the achilies and calves (I think calf elasticity can dictate it quite abit) to give it a nice stretch. Always gently and slowly and definitely don't push it!
      When I first started, they used to hurt quite a bit and I realised I was pointing too hard in the wrong areas and not stretching it out enough, with a plie afterwards.
      Just what I've found, I really hope that helps even a teeny bit :-) .

      place your toes and part of the metatarsus on a low step and do elevés on demi pointe stretching your tendon wheh you come down.The heel is goig to be "floating" alongating the tendon and giving it strenght cause you're using your body weight when you lift yourself.Do a minute or two on both feet,PARALLEL then about 30 seconds each foot the other one on coupé

    Hi Katie, I have a question for the Q&A .. I have started taking ballet classes at a different studio that trains in vaganova style (my old one was in the RAD) as a result i am a little behind, since the classes are advanced. My teacher is wonderful and i feel that i improve after allmost every class. The problem is that there are girls that have studied in a professional school (the system is different in my country), and they make comments about my technique and weight during class. most days i brush it off but some it really get's to me.. Any tips? Thanks

      Alexandra Paraíso Watching Kathryn Morgan in the meantime while I was trying to look for ballet classes is really what gave me a head start! Just because you’re not in a classroom doesn’t mean you’re not doing ballet. Watching Kathy is how I started ballet. I get the same amount of effort and exercise following her videos as I do in my ballet classes! Just start doing her videos (or other ballerinas tutorials, but I’ve found Kathy’s to be the safest) until you find an actual class! Then keep doing them! Good luck!
