    Looks beautiful, but I keep hearing my old russian teacher in the background, going like 'What you doing?! Arms, not Balanchine tentacles!' (add a heavy russian accent) 😂

    • @worldsoull
      @worldsoull 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      4:29 veeeeeerrrry reminiscent of tentacle arms haha. Still very pretty for things like Swan. But I would definitely also get in trouble for having so much wrist action haha.

      @serbanescusimona 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Violet Heroine Vaganova is something between tight arms and those Balanchine movements.

    • @makORmalonek
      @makORmalonek 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly, I do understand that in Balanchine style Kathryn's port de bras is wonderful but I watch almost exclusively Russian ballet so my understanding of what is beautiful is slightly different. There are many tips in the video though which apply to any style, which is great. :)

    • @serbanescusimona
      @serbanescusimona 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, I tried this Balanchine port de bras here and it looks great, but somehow that wrist movement takes away the length and that beautiful, long, round line. No wonder they say the Russian have the most beautiful arms, that they dance with their arms, and that Americans dance with their feet. They say the Vaganova style is the "classic" style, but those perfect positions, those delicate arms are soooo difficult to achieve!

    I studied in the cecchetti method and we did our port de bras the way you said not to do! We were specifically told not to do a flourish, the teachers would mock the flowery arms. There is a subtle grace in the movement and the smallest bend in the wrist. This was in the early 80s to the 90s when I was in school.

    • @mauracosta972
      @mauracosta972 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's a matter of sensibility. When one is first learning ballet, there's a tendency to flourish in a funny and weird way, which doesn't look pretty. I believe one can only romanticise arms and hands after the robotic and square mode is fully registered on your mind. That's why teachers will never tell you to flourish hand movements, it's something you will pick up naturally while your dancing improves...

    Can you do a video/answer a Q+A on how to work out in a fitness gym to benefit dancers? I don't want super bulky muscles, but my phys ed teachers make us work out in a gym, and we aren't offered things that I am interested in, such as gyrotonics or pilates. Thanks!

    Sorry about the irrelevance but I've been suffering from severe back pain and not being able to lift my leg and straighten it for the last 4 months with doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists not being able to understand what's wrong with me. I was just accepted to a dance academy where I should be going to school and getting professional dance classes at the same time. However there is a chance I won't ever be able to dance again :( I am on a waiting list for an MRI scan to hopefully put mine and my parents minds at rest from worrying of what it could be. I have always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer and I hope my back problem won't stop me from following my dreams. You have inspired me to always think on the bright side as you did with your illness and although it was tough you have managed to go back professional. I'm only 13, I used to be a gymnast competing for my country (scotland) but had been taking dance since I was 3. I had to stop gymnastics after a knee injury. I hope I will overcome this injury and perform on stage like you one day !

    I really struggle with center combinations, so I'd like videos on pique turns, and the ones that look like pique turns with passe which I'm not sure their name, and how to connect this and other things that usually go on menages, like with chaines. Actually, how to connect most things on grand allegro, like... which jumps usually go together, or what happens when you start with each leg, or how to prepare for a big jump, etc. I also would love a video explaining en face, croisé, effacé and ecarté.

    I loved this video! This explained to me why I see so often dancers seem to stop dancing and just start walking or taking steps. I know this probably won't make any sense because I can't properly articulate it, but especially in a pas de deux I often see the man seem to stop dancing and start walking toward his partner. If they saw this video, maybe it would they would learn to apply it to ankles as well. Did that make any sense? At any rate, this was a beautiful video! Thank you so much!

    Hey
    I was wondering if you maybe had some tips on how to move more freely and in flowing movements.. Ik ballet is pretty strict and everything but you have such pretty movements and I thought maybe I could ask you.. I am planning on starting dance lessons(ballroom n stuff) but I am afraid I'll look like a complete idiot because I have huge problems actually letting go and moving.. and not looking like a stick that is partly breaking while doing it.. idk how else to explain it but maybe you know what I mean. It's the reason I stopped taking contemporary lessons too.. I love doing it.. I just can't let myself go enough to create flowing and nice movement.. I look stiff and my movement is really choppy.. Do you have any tips on how to improve this? how to be able to flow in the movement?anyone?
