Casper has too much energy! | Helmet Cam

  • Well Casper was certainly full of energy today...! He was obviously harbouring a bit of pent up energy and decided he needed to get it all out in the school rather than in the field. Once he’d realised he was there to work not play, he was actually super nice and, as you can see, did a fantastic job over the canter poles. We then calmly popped a couple of cross poles from canter, which was the first time he’s jumped from canter with me, and he was foot perfect! Despite his little outbursts today, his actual canter transitions were a million times better than last week, and when he settled his canter felt more balanced over all - he just needs to learn when he can and can't gallop around with his friends! I guess that's babies for you :-)

    I can see why he’s called Casper. He spooks quite easily doesn’t he. He has a fast canter, almost like a gallop.

    Naughty pony! He is very clever and he learns so quick which is why I'm not sure if the riding school will work for him as although in most cases it's a good thing that he learns quickly when he is being ridden by lots of different riders many of them not as good as you I think he will also be quick to learn the bad habits as well! The first time I rode him he had the softest mouth I've ever felt and you didn't even have to barely touch it to stop him but he has already got so much stronger in the mouth as when he gets a bit fast with lots of people they tend to just panic and pull so it looses it's effectiveness so quickly with him! You ride him well though because you don't panic when he does get worried or is just being cheeky! x

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're totally right, he felt pretty soft in his mouth last week, but the second we started walking down to the school today he was pulling so hard I couldn't believe it! I was so disappointed when he started bolting off because he was so sweet last week, but at least he settled in the end. He really does learn so quickly, both good and bad... I definitely think he needs more consistency than he's getting while he's still so green, bless him. x

    Ha I had a similar experience today in my lesson!(kind of)I was jumping my trainers horse and he kept bolting after every jump! he is a very excitable horse bless him! But then, he completely took off and I couldn't stop him, slow him, or even make a circle because the other horses and riders were in the way! He is also a thoroughbred.... And he was galloping full tilt around the arena until I had to make an emergency dismount! I was so close to landing on my feet though! Then I lunged him for 30 minutes at a canter until he was calmer, popped back on and jumped a little more!

  • @user-wh2gp8ky6e
    @user-wh2gp8ky6e 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good job managing his little bolts!- but do you have any tips for a horse that won't stop cantering on a hack, I want to know other tips than just circling. Good video :)

      @user-wh2gp8ky6e 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @harrisonhawker3915
      @harrisonhawker3915 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tay my horse is quite strong sometimes but to stop him on a hack I don't pull back hard as he leans into the bit and fights so what works with him is a gentle but firm tug on one rein and then the other quite quickly which brings his head under him and slows him down

      I don't think you should run a horse into a wall or a fence, a horse could hurt itsellf. And when a horse has to much energy it is probely because it has been standing in a stall all day long. I think it is best to do groundwork with your horse before you start riding it.
      nothing rude intended, just my opinion.

    you rode so well! and please don't take this as hate, I think you handled him really weel and your such an amazing rider, but when he spooks or bolts, don't pat him, cause when you pat a horse, you're telling them they did well, and since he's young he might get confused. But once again, you handled him so well, this isn't hate!!

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rachel Wilcox To ride a horse 'uphill' basically just means to engage the hind quarters and get them off the forehand (as if they were going up a hill and needed more impulsion) rather than having them strung out and heavy on the forehand (like when a horse goes down a hill) :-)

  • @ainewhelan9370

    What my instructor would do is a pony has too much energy she would let he or she do a couple of laps of the arena in canter

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trouble is, cantering laps is exactly what this pony wanted to do, and while that certainly does work with some ponies to get the energy out (I know a couple who definitely need a good canter round before they can concentrate!), all that would teach Casper (an unbalanced youngster) is that he gets to run round fast whenever he wants - as he was sometimes ridden by less experienced riders in the riding school, that could then turn into a dangerous habit, on this particular pony. :-)
