I really love that your video wasn't too long winded and waffley ! I don't watch anything longer than 20 minutes these days as I just don't have the time (or attention span !) . The Audio could be sharper but it wasn't awful.... I have subscribed x
Hi Claire. I really appreciate your feedback. I agree with you about the length of videos! 🤭. I was conscious to edit out most of the waffle 😆 so I’m glad that it seemed an ok balance. Hmmm - not sure how to improve the sound. I will have to look into that. Maybe a separate mic is required. 🤔. Lovely to have you as a subscriber. I’m always happy to take feedback so we can make this channel great over time. Happy printing! 😍
Happy I found your channel, and I just subscribed. I love gelli printing with plant material. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I typically use leaves so I really want to try it with grasses. You got such beautiful results! Thank you for sharing. And I’m looking forward to more of your videos.
Hello. Thanks for commenting. Yes, the grasses were really fun to play with. I loved their fine detail. And they are surprisingly robust on the gel plate. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I best get on and make some more! 😊
Lovely video. Nicely explained and a beautiful result. I wanted to create this layered effect but didn't know how to achieve it, until now! Many thanks for sharing.
Oh great! Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback. I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. I plan to make more, so do let me know if there is something in particular that you are interested in. 😊
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I (think) I get it, and even if I don't understand the way it works, I definitely now know how to make it work. Definitely bookmarking this!
Hi Amber! I’m commenting before I continue watching. I remember the post in the facebook group someone asking about the white shape. Still has me baffled because I thought it would come from the original white paper. Can’t wait to see the process and allow my brain cells to process it lol. Thanks for sharing. I love your new channel and have watched your initial few videos. Keep them coming.. I’m a beginner but you are really inspiring me to stop procrastinating❣️😂🎨
It’s lovely to discover you’re from Australia too!! Hello from Sydney!🐨💚💛Thank you so much for sharing this process…. I have a grasp on it now.. so the final layer re activates the previous dry layers of paint so that the mask, in this cast the final plant comes away with the layers of paint stuck to it! Wow cool!! Looking forward to your next videos! PS: very cute editing with text notes and use of the (appropriate😆🥰) song overlay to avoid listening to hairdryer sound. These little things make the learning experience so much better. Nice that you took on board what a couple of viewers suggested🙏🏼💙
Teehee - Thanks for noticing the music. It made me giggle (It’s the little things in life!) 😆. Ah you are in Sydney. Nice to welcome a fellow Aussie! I’m glad the video has helped you to see the process. Sometimes figuring out gel prints can really give you a sore head! I hope you give the technique a go. 👍
It’s a fun technique. Yes, you can get really inventive with what you use for your final masking layer (the grass seeds). Any spindly weeds will work well. Ferns are good. Leaves you can find. You could even cut a mask shape out of paper and lay that on. And sometimes my house plants are kind enough to donate a frond or two! I hope you give it a go. 😊
@@AmberBennisonArt I think I must have going around with eyes shut. I went for a walk yesterday and saw lots of grasses with seed heads. And this morning I also saw some which I picked. I will give it a go soon - but before then I've got some textured wall paper to try out.
Hi Karen. Yes I really like the effect of the fine grasses. But I also did some with ferns that came out really well. I loved the detail of their leaf shape. The technique accentuated it. Also look out for other weeds. They are often fine and spindly. Cow parsley shape can work very well. Maybe remove some of the flower stems first. And then press it under a pile of books until it lays really flat. I can feel another tutorial coming on… 😆
Fantastic, so much easier to understand watching you. I have never let a layer dry out on the gel plate, so ai am going to give it a try. I live in Hawai’i so it tends to be hot and dry, or wet and cold as I live at 2,300’ elevation. I will see…
Hi Pricille. So glad you came and watched. Yes, in Perth we have hot and dry too. It can be a problem! Mainly because that first layer dries on the plate before you get your plants down and do the first paint removal. You have to get everything lined up and work quick. It’s the same with that final pick up layer. You don’t want it too thick. But it needs to be a fully wet layer when you put your final paper down. Otherwise it won’t collect all the layers off the plate. (Think of it as gluing the dried image onto the paper). If you find you have problems with everything drying too quick, then you could try Golden Open Paints which have a slower drying time. Or I read that some people add a drop of retarder or glazing medium to slow down the drying time. I’d love to see your results. Tag me if you post in our group, so I don’t miss it! Have fun. 🤩
Yes, good point. You do have to be careful not to overheat your gel plate, as it might damage it. So the cool setting is best. My hairdryer does not have a cool setting 😬 so I just keep it moving quickly around. Thanks for the pick up. I’ll try to mention that in future videos. 👍
Astonishing! Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻 I don’t have a gel plate yet but watching this (after seeing your FB post) certainly inspires me!! I’ve only seen a couple of videos so far - this one and one by Lavinia using ink from pads I think - but the finished results are just stunning. Thanks v much for the video. Feedback - as you ask - sometimes voice is bit muffled. You could zoom out slightly to show entire plate. Name the products you’re using…brand etc (not just colours) and where you can purchase them..? Qs - could you do this on to card rather than thin paper if you wanted to make a card with it? What sort of card? Is there a difference between the two brayers? So even if you dry the paint, when you put another layer over the top, it reactivates it?? Is that just with acrylic paint or also with water reactive ?
Hi Gill! I’m glad you are inspired. Gel printing is great fun (and a little bit addictive - beware 😆). The paint I was using is acrylic paint. There really is too much to say in a comment here. People find out what they love over time. However, in summary, really, you can use any! I mainly use Golden Fluid Acrylics. It’s a professional artists paint and is beautiful to use with lovely bright colours and great lightfastness for my collage work. But it a bit pricey. I also use Amsterdam standard, and Liquitex Basics especially for demos. The Amsterdam and Liquitex are both a good medium budget ranges. Lots of people use them with great results on the gel plate. But if you have already got acrylic paints then try them out first. You can buy all of them online or in art shops. Yes you can print on card or paper. A smooth surface will pick up the most detail. People often print on Bristol Card if they are making prints for framing. A good card weight might be 250 - 300 gsm. Really it’s personal preference on the quality of paper you want to get. Also some people print on paper then mount their favourites on ready made cards. You’ll find that not all prints come out as you want, so that process allows you to select the best for mounting. Stay tuned and I post a more of a beginners tutorial with some of this information included. Sorry that the sound wasn’t 100%. I may need to invest in a better mic. You should definitely give gel printing a go! 😊
Oh - and no difference between the brayers. 6” soft rubber brayer is good to start. Speedball brand is great but you can find cheaper. Two brayers are ideal - one for warm colours and one for cool colours. 👍
Hi Annie, I’m glad you asked for clarification. So the papers I use at around the 3:31 and 4:02 time stamps, are NOT part of the final gel print. They are separate papers. Their purpose is to remove the paint around the seed head so that the image stands out and the final paint layer can show through. You can remove more or less of this background paint, depending on the look you want in your final print. Whatever paint is left on the plate at this stage, will be the top layer of the final print. If you look closely, you will see that I removed most of the paint from the top centre, but left more down the bottom of the print. This gave the colour graduation in the final print. When I lifted the seed heads up you can see that the paint trapped underneath is the image of the grasses. (This is called a ‘ghost print’). Once this is dry I put on the final paint layer which will become the background. I pick up all these layers using a fresh clean sheet of paper. By the way, the sheets I used to remove the paint from around the seed heads are not wasted. I continue to use them in this way. The layers build up and you end up with another interesting paper that you can use as a background or a collage paper. Sorry for such a long answer. you may have been looking for a simple yes/no! 😆. In which case the answer is simply NO! (Heh heh - a bit late if you have already got this far!). Does that help?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these prints! 🤎🌾 Beautiful work.

The key to this is also your plants you have used, small leaves... Will have to look for something similar in my area

Hi again Gill, I’ve now posted a ‘Back to Basics’ guide to printing with plants. Great for those just getting started. So you can check that out. 🌿
Are you using the same piece of paper for each lift? It isn’t clear in the video.
