That's an interesting way to look at it. I've always thought of it as further from us in the future, and even though Rob did say that the Superbowl 100 was not meant to be a frame of reference, I still like the idea that it means the show takes place somewhere in the 2060s to the 2070s. And if that's the case, then total atomic annihilation isn't too far off (October 23rd, 2077)! The Red Menace is looming over Jenny, and she doesn't even know it!
Yeah, I like thinking that it's further into the future too! Obviously there's no definite answer, but the evidence that I've gathered points to it being set in the 2000s!
@@MyLifeasaTeenageRobotFanbase (This is a joke/fun post, so please don't take this seriously) MLaaTR secretly takes place in an alternate 20XX, the same timeline used for Mega Man. At the end of their life Cycles (both physical and operational), Nora and her daughter Jenny Wakeman will create XJ-10/X (Roman numeral for 10), also called "Jasmine" as the last creation for the XJ-Series before passing. "Jasmine", based on her construction, is the most advanced and powerful creation than all the previous models combined. Ensuring that her systems and pre-established morals will be ready for the years to come, Nora seals her away to undergo a continuous diagnostic and simulation test for the next 30 years until she is ready. XJ-9 or "Jenny" will later be refurbished and sent into stasis to guard her new sister and act as a guide for her upon the time of her awakening.
Obviously we could say that Brad's reference to the "blizzard of 24" is just a throwaway like the superbowl line, but I think it might not be. If "24" is 6+ years before the year of the show, that would conveniently place it in "the 30s" of whatever century that it takes place in. It could just as easily by an alternate 2030's.
There's an unusual amount of landline phones considering how common cell phones were by the time the show aired. Brad has a cell phone in the intro, but it's never shown in the actual show, when he talks on the phone from home he uses a cordless landline phone, cell phones are to my knowledge only shown in a single episode.
Could it perhaps be a reference to the movie "AI artificial intelligence"? I say this because it seems like a future where phones continue to be seen as landlines
2075 is my headcanon year the show is set in. My timeline goes- 1775: Tremorton is founded 2020: Nora Wakeman is born 20??: Human astronauts land in alpha centauri, and discover alien life. This puts Earth on the cosmic map, and a target for invasion. 2050s: Intergalactic Wars begin and Skyway Patrol is founded to stop it. Nora joins and creates much of their weaponry and gadgets. The invaders are successfully fought off and (relative) world peace is attained. At some point Nora meets Vexus and they become foes. Nora eventually leaves in disgrace after creating Armagedroid. 2060s: Nora independently begins her XJ-Series of robots, aiming to create the perfect planetary guardian who can think freely without relying on hard programming to fulfill tasks. 2070: The ninth and final XJ is made and goes online. At first Jenny's mind is infantile and has to mature, but does so faster than a regular human. 2075: Jenny has been secretly protecting Earth for several years before meeting and befriending Brad and Tuck, causing her to become a publicly known figure. This is where the show formally begins.
The year where the astronauts landed on Alpha Centauri could have been in 2027 or maybe in 2049 Also, in the case of the blizzard of the 24th it could have occurred at some point in 2024 during Nora's childhood
I always assumed that the show is not supposed to be set in any particular time--it could be set in the future (indeed, many have deduced that the show is set in the 2070s or later, given the "Super Bowl C" reference), but based on the many similarities to the time in which the show was on TV (and the present), I always assumed it was set in that same time period, about 2003 to 2007 (2009 if you count the un-cancellation on Nicktoons for the third season). The Musique, the vinyl records in the backgrounds of Jenny's room, the clothing (which doesn't really fit 1930s predictions for 2000), the CD that Brad plays in "Unlicensed Flying Object," and many other things all seem to point toward a contemporary setting. And it's not so much that Rob Renzetti "did his research" as it is that he's a longtime fan of science fiction, especially from the 1920s and 30s, and thus was familiar with things like Metropolis and art deco. And of course, he worked at Hanna Barbera, the studio behind The Jetsons, before creating MLAATR.
I still remember believing the setting was contemporary when I worked on my fics back in the day before settling in to the proposed 2070's setting. I even had mention of past World Robot Competition events happening in the 20th century, including a few plot points I can't spoil for the uninitiated.
The Musique is AirPods, and we'd all be stuck in a Fallout 4 time between the years of 2067-2077, which could give us Jenny switching to fusion cores as an energy source. Also Brad would be enlisted in the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Institute synths tring to capture Jenny.
2072 Set in the year 2072, model XJ-9, or Jenny Wakeman as she prefers, is a crime-fighting, super-powered robot who consistently rescues her hometown of Tremorton from impending dangers, such as monsters, aliens, and even evil sock-puppets! Based on the original television hit, My Life as a Teenage Robot: Rebooted takes place immediately after Season 3 and acts as a direct, fan-made continuation. Set in the year 2072, model XJ-9, or Jenny Wakeman as she prefers, is a crime-fighting, super-powered robot who consistently rescues her hometown of Tremorton from impending dangers, such as monsters, aliens, and even evil sock-puppets! But as she's programmed with the highly sensitive mind of a teenager, she'd rather find herself shopping down at the mall or hanging out with her friends, much to Dr. Nora Wakeman's discontent. "Back in early 2013, I decided that the world had seen enough cancellations of television hits without any conclusions whatsoever to already established story arcs, specifically in the animation category. There were too many amazing cartoons abandoned and left to die by their own networks, and this needed to be solved. While I couldn't save them all, I knew I could at least go for one. With that in mind, I reviewed multiple cartoons over the course of several months as candidates to receive the grand treatment of a rebooted conclusion. These cartoons had to be cancelled (no legitimate series finale) and included, but were not limited to, Invader Zim, American Dragon: Jake Long, and even The Spectacular Spider-Man. However, one particular series stood proudly out of the crowd: My Life as a Teenage Robot. While arguably not the best cartoon overall, this particular series definitely suffered the worst with poor advertising, limited and inconsistent time-slots, non-sequential airing of episodes, years between seasons that were basically sitting in storage (completed), and even dethroning by its own network's hand in supposedly "fan-driven" contests. With its creative storylines, beautiful yet simple art styles, sophisticated humor, and potential for high drama, the story of Jenny Wakeman was an easy pick to be given the rebooted conclusion of two additional seasons."
My personal head canon is that before the events of the show, in the early 20th century, the Martian Invasion from "The War of the Worlds" took place. So if what Rob Renzetti's tweet about the show being set in the then-present day of the early 2000's is accurate, then all the retro-futuristic sci-fi tech we see is the result of years of studying and reverse-engineering leftover Martian tech.
I too also look forward to Super Bowl 100 as well. Not because I would watch Football, but just to see how far Robotics will come by then! If I ever get a Tour at Boston Dynamics, I'll ask the staff if they ever heard of both of these shows. I Promise! 😇
The "blizzard of 24" that Brad mentioned, perhaps it refers to the fact that there was a storm/blizzard perhaps in the year 2024 And about the year where the series is located, it could be said that it is 2070s(2070-2080)
🤖 So does Robotboy take place in the same time as well. 😆 Then again that show I think took place in the present as well but nowhere near as Retrofuturistic!
Easy. Just look at "The Future" based media that came out of the 1930s and look for their expected dates that alot of future tech would become modern. Back to the Future came out in the 80s and said we'd have flying cars and self-lacing shoes by the 2010s. That's 30 years. So it's possible within a 30-50 year timeframe would be the implied era for MLAATR. I doubt the implication was any further than the year 2000. THAT was seen as THE date futurians would look to.
I’m surprised no one mentioned the fact that in Future Shock, clearly a drive-in movie theater is a big part of the episode, something throughout history that peaked from the 1940s-1960s.
1:23 The show would actually be set in the 2070s or later, because Jenny says she doesn't remember Super Bowl 100, and she's five years old. Therefore, the show would have to be set at least 6 years afterwards.

The 30’s impression of the 2000s was WAY more ambitious than that of the show. If it was the 30’s prediction of the 2000s then EVERYONE in the show would have flying cars and robot assistants. In the show, the high tech is only possessed by the most dedicated engineers and the military. No more retconning Renzetti, this is far closer to the 2000 perception of 2066 than the 30’s perception of 2000.
