Been a while since I saw this show, but it's not unplausible that the Dr. would make a young robot either to try and have her work live on through youth or to take on a parent relationship. It doesn't seem as warm here as say Dr. Light to Mega Man since she's pushing the "XJ9" name for Jenny which is more of an "it" name meaning it's probably hard for her to see her as her own person. (She knows the invention.)
@@runningoncylinders3829 or she wants to be a mom, but couldnt bear children, thus creating her for those reasons. I mean it was explained later that XJ9 had whyever earlier phases where she would to change her diapers and such, so I assume she built XJ9 (after whatever XJ1-8 were gonna be) as a robot that "grows over time" due to her reprogramming Jenny from time to time (offscreen), or on screen with like the "human suit", the dream device and so on.
Actually, if I had to choose nick toons that seriously got the short end of the stick, it would definitely have to be Making Fiends and El Tigre. They deserved, SO much better
Making Fiends especially since not only was it shoved on Nicktoons but it just vanished afterwards and Nick doesn’t even rerelease it anywhere so people on youtube have to resort to bootlegging the show
Remember the Christmas special when Jenny was basically kidnapped for a whole year and brainwashed to be a holiday terrorist? Or how Sheldon is actually hundreds of years old? This show was something else, man, and I loved it.
What about the episode where jenny hallucinates the world as greek mythology dr.seuss. or the episode where the moon is apparently inhabited by an anthropomorphic cat.
Its more like 1950s anime as a whole, which was inspired by 1920s Western cartoon styles. Astro Boy and Felix the Cat can both be in the background of this show, and would blend in just fine.
She split town, changed her name, and made a robot that could live the life of a normal girl that she could never live growing up as a kid genius with 10 siblings. Lisa is essentially trying to live her life through the eyes of a robot. Yep, seems about right. After all, child geniuses tend to go through a lot of anxiety and depression because of the pressure that comes with being super smart on top of social pressure to fit in. It's the reason why "nerd kid gets bullied" is such a common cliche. Kids like Lisa would have to deal with that more than anything, given that they can be seen as abnormally smart on top of already being weird for having 9 sisters and 1 brother. If Lisa had to go through high school the same way that a child of typical intelligence would (though I would assume that she would be in a special program or something similar), she'd probably have to deal with the aforementioned struggles and pressures of being an extremely smart child. Looking at it realistically, if Lisa wanted a child at some point in the future, she probably would have designed Jenny, a perfectly normal girl aside from the fact that she's, you know, a robot. Jenny would never have to face the same struggles that Lisa faced. It's why we even see Nora design a skin to allow Jenny to be more normal. She wants to grant what is essentially her child a life which she could never have. I know that I'm looking too deeply into the joke, but I genuinely want to explore that concept a bit more. Maybe if The Loud House gets cancelled, they could have a "where are they now" moment, with a little nod to MLAATR thrown in when they get to Lisa. I think it would be really fitting to have her basically become Nora.
@@pavloverboy I see that. Actually, Miguel Puga the artist behind Loud House made a comic fan art piece featuring the Louds as various Nickelodeon characters. And guess what? Yep, you guessed it. Lisa was Dr. Wakeman! :>)
So Nick’s mistreatment of Korra was nothing new. Bleh. I remember watching this show when it was new, and I never noticed that the first season took over a year to air. That’s insane and infuriating.
@@nunouno001 Korra got the deluxe treatment compared to Harvey Beaks and Welcome to the Wayne, among the others. At least the episodes came out in a rather timely manner.
The Korra mistreatment I hear of seems to not really have happened the way a lot of people thought. I usually hear off it being that they didn't know that they would be given more episodes to work on or were jostled around, but supposedly the show was actually given the greenlight for all three seasons after the first really early(as in, they knew earlier in Korra that they were getting more seasons earlier than they did AtLA, which was actually done on a season by season schedule and could have ended at both the S1 or S2 Finale). The only "mistreatment" the show seems to have suffered seems to be that it was shoved off the main network in a huff later on, but that was when it underperformed in terms of viewership.
Metal Hatsune Miku: THE SERIES!! jokes aside i love the show and i cant believe how badly Nickelodeon threated it, Maybe in Cartoon Network it could have gone better (same with Invader Zim), oh well at least it has More than just 27 EPISODES!!!
ironic cuz there was an episode where Jenny spoke japanese (speak no evil I guess was the name) due to a malfunction in her circuits (or the lack of the speaking chip validated for her to speak english)
2:43 It's kinda implied that part of Wakeman's motivation in designing Jenny and her sisters the way she did was out of a desire for a daughter of her own. Keep in mind her first world saving robot Armagedroid, lacked emotion and feelings for compassion which made him unstable. So what better way to solve this problem than to design the robot that she could develop a parent-child relationship with? 3:41 Thats funny since I've never been able to enjoy KP anywhere near as much.
My Life as a Teenage Robot is such an underrated gem. I love everything about it-the characters, the art style, the music, definitely one of my favorites. This and Danny Phantom are definitely shows I wouldn't mind having a reboot down the line.
@@thephantomsplit Yeah, I'd be good with either-or providing the quality was good. DP's quality dipped after Season 2 and MLaaTR was never even given a good chance.
Easily one of my favourite Nicktoons! Jenny's adventures to save the world or experience life as an ordinary girl were definitely a treat, and still brings me joy after all these years.
For many years, I thought of Nicktoons as an isolated little paradise where good cartoons thrived. Then I learned it was the place where good cartoons went to die. Before you ask, I did indeed discover this show on Nicktoons.
My Life as a Teenage Robot and 6teen were both shows I watched a lot during my time in middle school right before highschool. I ended up watching many shows about teenage characters since I was kind of a shut in during those years. In a way it's probably the closest I got to a typical teenage experience, just with wackier situations and a lot of fights with Aliens from space.
I loved this show when I was 8. Something about the humor, the robot designs, Vexus...appealed to me and now I've grown to appreciate it more as an adult. Seriously, if you want a primer for animation work, try watching this and analyzing it.
If I had to make a list of my top 10 favorite Nickelodeon shows, it looks like this: 1) Avatar the Last Airbender 2)Danny Phantom 3) My Life as a Teenage Robot 4) Catscratch 5) Rugrats 6) Catdog 7) Ren and Stimpy 8) Making Fiends 9) Fairly Odd Parents 10) Spongebob Squarepants And the reason for why Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob are so low on my list is because they were good shows that I loved as a kid but as I grew up got bad over time. Every other show on my list, in my opinion, all ended before they had a chance to get bad. Oh and for honorable mentions: 1) El Tigre 2) Kappa Mikey 3) The X's 4) Chalk Zone And these are honorable mentions because they're shows that I did watch as a kid but as I grew up I had forgotten all about them to the point where if I hear someone mention them, I go "Those shows really existed? Huh..."
I loved watching this show back in the day, especially for its main characters and that retro art style. The "Kim Possible" comparison you made is also spot-on. Both of these shows did a great job mixing fun action/adventure with high-school shenanigans, without making the latter element feel generic or obnoxious. I'm with you on how music scores deserve more attention, especially from animated television shows. The retro/sci-fi score of "Teenage Robot" is no exception. As for the whole thing of Mrs. Wakeman always calling Jenny 'XJ9,' I just took as another standard issue where parents call their kids by their birth name, while said kid prefers being called by some nickname they came up with. Either that, or a way to describe the scientist/creation relationship, like how Jumba almost always called Stitch 'Experiment 626.'
Mr. Enter, thank you for your review of this great show. You’ve definitely made all us fans even more proud to enjoy the music and the background art as well! Looking forward to continuing to watch this series to the end.
Love this show in every aspect. The first time I watched it was with my siblings, and they complained that the female villain ripped off the Tiger Claws from Xiaolin Showdown because she ripped a hole through space and walked through it. Now I look back at it as a funny coincidence. I related to Tucker the most, being the youngest of my siblings and still do.
I LOVE the art direction behind this show. Beyond the 50s style to the design work, there's a lot of times when the animators try to experiment with the color schemes, particularly when she'd go into space. As a kid, I thought the simplified palette was weird and off-putting, but now I love what they did there. It's the kind of visual imagination that makes me especially appreciate animation.
I love this show to bits, easily one of my favourite Nicktoons. The art style is beautiful, the characters (and in particular Jenny) are great, the action is awesome, the stories are good, I just love this show. I would also squee everytime Jenny's sisters made an appearance. I'm still not sure why, I just love them so much.
I don’t know why, but MLAATR feels like a 50’s comic book series adapted into a modernized television series. A lot of MLAATR has that 50’s vibe, like how Sci-Fi is depicted, the art style, the backgrounds, how cartoony it is, everything. With the exception though of some of the technology and music. The Wayside cartoon was kinda like that too except that it was actually adapted from a book, and no sci-Fi stuff.
It’s a shame how badly treated this show was. My Life as a Teenage Robot is awesome for its animation, action, stories, characters like Jenny who is probably one of the best female cartoon characters, etc. Also Nora Wakemen may have probably created Jenny as a teenage girl robot because she might want to act like a parent having a daughter. But that’s just a theory.
@locogrunt3012 He was removed from the top 10 most wanted list in 2018. Sure he is still at large. But he is wanted for crimes committed in 1976. So the timing really shouldn't be relevent.
ultimate2018 A brad now a days is supposed to be some middle ground between the virgin and the chad that you seen on those memes. At least from what I’ve heard and seen.
Honestly, it seemed like a bit of the inspiration for this show came from Astro Boy. Though it goes well into the general 50s scifi ideas, some of the aesthetics style has an Astro Boy feel to it. I just assumed that Dr. Wakeman designing a "teenage girl" robot kind of mirrored the way Umataro Tenma designed a little boy robot. They simply took out the sad reason behind Astro Boy's design in favor of market appeal. So we get Dr. Wakeman designs a girl robot cuz.... potatoes, as you like to say.
Although it could also have some inspiration from One Piece (a manga/anime that would arrive before MLAATR): -the protagonist is a teenager who can stretch -his enemy is an anthropomorphic animal -his father figure is practically an "old man on steroids"
Y'know just looking at these clips I forgot just how BEAUTIFUL this show looks. The designs are just so distinct and full of personality that you get a feel for the character just by looking at them. It does the same thing that Butch Harman does to a lesser extent where it cut corners on perspective but made up for that with spectacular colors and mood lighting. It's got a style that looks like it's taking inspiration from others but makes it its own. It's simple but it overflows with personality. I can't help but gush over it. Fantastic.
I loved this show. Jenny was my favorite MC character. To this day I still think Nic were complete A-holes for the way they treated it. Teenage Robot had so much potential.
Let's not forget Quinton Flynn, the man who voiced Sheldon, went on to voice one of the most badass cyborg ninjas. Be careful who you make fun of in high school indeed
Rob Ronzetti also worked as a storyboard artist and writer for Dexter's lab, Power puff girls and Samurai Jack. He also created the Mina and the Count shorts for Oh Yeah Cartoons! But in all honesty this show really deserved better. I blame low ratings and Nick's lack of investment in the show.
You don’t know HOW LONG I have waited for you to review this show!! I started watching this show back in October and I could safely say that this is the best Nicktoon ever!! It has incredible writing, a unique art style and was pretty much ahead of its time!! Not to mention, most of the characters are great, ESPECIALLY Jenny herself who has become one of my most favorite characters in fiction! I mean, we’re talking about an awesome and memorable design, amazing powers and basically being a toon robot with a bit of realism put in there! And did I mention the voice acting?! I know that the cast seems pretty limited but this show really shows their range with Jenny’s VA being the best role she’s ever done (seriously it sounds so natural)!! It’s such a shame that this show kept getting hit by Nickelodeon so badly...but at least we could still appreciate this underrated gem! (Yeah, can you tell I really love this show?!)
"Some shows are better in hindsight"... And for me, MLATR was one of those shows. It was always a show I felt had the *potential* to be one of my favorites more than it was an actual favorite. The reason, unfortunately, was probably Jenny herself, or rather her over-used archetype: the super-powered "average" girl. When MLATR came out I'd just graduated from high school and never wanted to think about it again. EVER. Finally getting out of that hellhole was a dream come true for me, so a protagonist who had this amazing superhero life but dreamed of being a "normal teenage girl" who went to high school, went to parties/dances, dated boys, ect. was just *not* one I was going to be able to relate to. Luckily, there was plenty of sci-fi action and humor to keep me coming back, as well as some pretty likable characters (I was friends with all the "Brads" back then). Also, I hate to say it, but I really didn't like the show's art style (I've changed my stance on that, however, so don't @ me). I found it kind of ugly and didn't like the color palate. Now, I appreciate it a lot more for its unique retro style and understand what it was going for. And since I'm no longer fresh out of the pure Hell that was high school, that part of the show doesn't really bother me anymore. Despite the stuff that didn't work for me back then, I still enjoyed the show and watched it whenever it was on because there was a lot to like about it, far more than there was to dislike. Now it just makes me sad that, like Invader ZIM, Nick screwed this show over and didn't give it a proper chance to shine. Invader ZIM became my all-time favorite cartoon in spite of all the network meddling, and who knows? Maybe MLATR could be higher up on my list now if there had just been more episodes released and it hadn't gotten dumped on their other channel. It's definitely a show I didn't appreciate enough back then but look back on fondly now. Also like ZIM, MLATR seriously deserves the Netflix movie treatment.
nick is known to treat cartoons with little care, take constant payne, making fiends, harvey beaks and even the missed opportunity that were the pilots they aired(Random! Cartoons).
Since everybody here is talking about the episodes, does anyone remember the episode where Jenny loses one of her language discs in Japan which lead her to speak Japanese for the majority of the episode? That one is my favorite!!
6:33... Nah that still means the same to me. Her defacto mom didn't really give her a regular name but a robot one that is basically a serial number. I'd say it's like a mom always refering to her child as "Daughter". Yet This always felt way worse than that to me. It kinda implies that She made a Robot with a brilliantly functioning true AI with a personality of a teenage girl & yet she still treats said teenage girl. LIKE A ROBOT. WTF?!?
See that I can actually get behind. I feel like it being an allegory to real-life issues is just a tad weak compared to the far worse in-universe fact of constantly calling a 100% sentient robot by its serial number when it wants a real name.
See while calling her by her serial number makes sense in universe, it still ends up being relatable to being deadname because of how Jenny reacts to it, since she had chosen a name for herself that she likes using. It's happened to me personally, so I can relate that aspect of the show to my own life. Not that it was the intention of the creators to be disrespectful, or that your interpretation is wrong.
@@CalypsoTheWanderingStar I mean Jenny's initial reaction is 100% valid, it's just Jenny drops the annoyance pretty early and just accepts still being called XJ9. I don't think anyone just gives up that quick which is where I think the implication falters.
@@RyanStorey1231 he might Say that's The only thing he disliked about The show, but in his Twitter he Said in general Catscratch and Penguins Of Madagascar we're better than he thought. He never Said there were Masterpieces but he Said he At least enjoyed them
Catscratch was one of those shows where I only saw a couple episodes and thought I just made it up in my head as a dream or something like that(come on you’ve all been there with some show)
I just remembered playing the game "Mecha-Cat Destructo!" And nothing else. I went back to watch some of the show after FINALLY remembering the name of the show, and I really do think it's one of the more consistent nicktoons I've seen.
There is an episode in this show called Tradeshow Showdown where Professor Wakeman actually starts referring to Jenny by her real name and it’s a major plot point of the episode.
Not the last time Nickelodeon screwed over creators. If recall correctly, Harvey Beaks was cancelled and the creator was uninformed to the point he ranted on Cartoon Brew but Nickelodeon forced him to make a follow-up apology. If I was in these creators' shoes, I'd be pissed too. I know Nickelodeon executives has the final say to do what they want with their IPs but they should at least keep their employees informed. After all, it is their creators that keeps Nickelodeon a float; not just overly paid executives. In addition, some creators take their work at a personal level as if it was their own which they should do so as they dedicate their lives working for the network.
I remember first seeing it in your Top 25 Most Disturbing Cartoon Episodes list MrEnter! That flesh episode.... (shudders) Next time MrEnter talks about Butch Hartman's second cartoon!
“The worst Nickelodeon has ever treated a show?” At least said bad treatment never lead MLAATR to narrative structure issues. Cough, Korra, cough, cough.
4:24 HOW DID I FORGET THE OBVIOUS MARIO REFERENCE THERE!? Also, the main villain of the show was voiced by the late great Eartha Kitt, so that's a win right there.
I know Rebecca Sugar said she based Peridot on an "Invader Zim" OC she created a long time ago, but Peridot's design (with her limb enhancers), plus her working on a "Cluster", gave me some serious "My Life As A Teenage Robot" vibes. In fact, a lot of Homeworld gave me those vibes. Can't help but feel it was a bit of an influence on her.
There's some problems I have with this show, but I do still love it. Like you, I recognize how aggravating Sheldon's character is, and that really bitters the Christmas episode for me. No one but SHELDON expects that Jenny is being mind controlled, not even her own mother! Also, the episode "No Harmony In Melody" really hurts to watch. Brad finally finds love in a nice robot girl, but Jenny can't allow them to be happy, and falsely accuses Melody of being evil. It's probably well written, but hard to watch, because it just ends with Jenny ruining their happiness, and crushing Melody's spirit.
Catscratch was treated far worse than MLAATR. At least the latter: 1) Lasted more than 1 season. 2) Has seasonal home video releases. 3) Didn’t rot in limbo after Season 1 on Nicktoons before getting quietly cancelled. 4) Wasn’t severely under promoted.
This manages to do with animation what The Cars did with music, it manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. This shows whole style seems like a mix of 30s/40s American Cartoons and 60s/70s anime (AstroBoy most especially)
Yeah, this definitely was a great show. Funny that you're doing Danny Phantom next because Teenage Robot along with DP are proof Nick can really do superhero/comedy shows really well....Uh..Well do them well mostly. That animated Henry Danger show is probably due in this marathon and yeeeeah it's a disaster.
I'm honestly kinda surprised I was able to watch this show when I was young, now knowing how poorly it was treated. By the way, I'm excited for that Danny Phantom review.
This has always been one of my favorite nicktoons and superhero shows in general. It's right up there with Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10 and Danny Phantom for my favorite superhero shows not based on previous existing characters.
The only episode I remember as young kid is when Jenny became a pair of eyeballs attached to a brain. I forget the episodes name. My favorite episode is 'Tuckered Out'
They did have a couple songs! In "Humiliation 101" Jenny and Brad break out into a Broadway styled showtune about horrible things happening to the school, and "Escape From Cluster Prime" features a 60's-esque bubblegum pop tune about how Jenny feels needed and appreciated as a hero in disguise. If you ask me though, the show could have used a couple more 😂
When I was a kid, I loved the idea of this show. Watching it now, I feel like it’s biggest set back was the humor and writing. It was a super creative premise though.
This will always be my second-favorite Nicktoon after Invader Zim. The unique art-deco art style that calls back to early Mikey Mouse cartoons, the music - I will ALWAYS jam out to that theme song, the voice acting (including the legendary Eartha Kitt as Vexus!), the varied sense of humor throughout, the cool new powers they're always coming up with for Jenny, and the fact that it's a show with a female lead that's not really about her romantic life, it just all adds up to a real gem to me. Excuse me, it's five o' clock, I got a call to go bladin...
I think the idea of Jenny being called XJ9 by her mother is more like your parents calling you Robert instead of Bob. It's a more formal way to say the name.

Msybe its the astro boy thing. My dsughter died so i will build a robot to replace her
@@runningoncylinders3829 or she wants to be a mom, but couldnt bear children, thus creating her for those reasons.

Because the Christmas special aired so rarely, I only saw it once as a kid and thought I dreamed it up for a while.
The 50’s aesthetics completely went over my head. I just thought it was like a western anime thing.
It’s sort of the 1930s and 50s Art Deco style...
Well anime was influenced by the golden age of cartoon(1930s-1950s).
@@anarchimation1448
Art deco is completely different.
Funny you mention that considering Jenny's VA has actually been in a few anime dubs.
Its more like 1950s anime as a whole, which was inspired by 1920s Western cartoon styles. Astro Boy and Felix the Cat can both be in the background of this show, and would blend in just fine.
Plot twist: Nora Wakeman is actually Lisa Loud, 60 years from now.

Legend of Korra comes in second place to this show honestly.

Fun fact: This show and I are practically twins. I was born at 8:03 PM when the series premied at 8:30 that same night.

My Life as a Teenage Robot is the most highly underrated Nickelodeon Cartoon ever
So this is Nick's Megas XLR.
Also, how did this never crossover with Danny Phantom?
Robot ghosts. The shit writes itself.
I loved this show when I was 8. Something about the humor, the robot designs, Vexus...appealed to me and now I've grown to appreciate it more as an adult.
Seriously, if you want a primer for animation work, try watching this and analyzing it.
I'd just like to say I LOVE those retro Nickelodeon bumpers. The doo-wop jingles are catchier than they have any right to be.
If I had to make a list of my top 10 favorite Nickelodeon shows, it looks like this:
1) Avatar the Last Airbender
2)Danny Phantom
3) My Life as a Teenage Robot
4) Catscratch
5) Rugrats
6) Catdog
7) Ren and Stimpy
8) Making Fiends
9) Fairly Odd Parents
10) Spongebob Squarepants
And the reason for why Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob are so low on my list is because they were good shows that I loved as a kid but as I grew up got bad over time. Every other show on my list, in my opinion, all ended before they had a chance to get bad.
Oh and for honorable mentions:
1) El Tigre
2) Kappa Mikey
3) The X's
4) Chalk Zone
And these are honorable mentions because they're shows that I did watch as a kid but as I grew up I had forgotten all about them to the point where if I hear someone mention them, I go "Those shows really existed?
I'm still not sure why, I just love them so much.
kind of makes me wish Netflix would pick this show back up with new episodes
Last time i checked hulu has it.
One thing I never got was Jenny was the last XJ robot to be built but she's the oldest out of her sisters.
Think of them like Syndrome's Omni Droids from The Incredibles. Each one smarter and more capable than the last...
Danny Phantom next time? Imagine doing the nicktoons with two of the catchiest theme songs back to back. Looking forward to it.

Although it could also have some inspiration from One Piece (a manga/anime that would arrive before MLAATR):
-the protagonist is a teenager who can stretch
-his enemy is an anthropomorphic animal
-his father figure is practically an "old man on steroids"

Still waiting for that last point, it would be a dream if done right
nick is known to treat cartoons with little care, take constant payne, making fiends, harvey beaks and even the missed opportunity that were the pilots they aired(Random! Cartoons).
Since everybody here is talking about the episodes, does anyone remember the episode where Jenny loses one of her language discs in Japan which lead her to speak Japanese for the majority of the episode? That one is my favorite!!
Yeah and jennys va was bilingual in japanese.

She made a Cluster bot? Was Spinel's design Jenny inspired?
