- 1- Is training carried out everyday on the Freedom Star, it seems to me that would be the only plausible way to. get 365 days sea time to become and A.B.?
2- Whats better, get my STCW myself or through the SIU Apprenticeship Program?
3- Does the Union pay you Apprenticeship wages while a student is in training at the Piney Point, Maryland facility?
4- Do you have to shower with other people?
5- During Phase 2 and 4 can you do more that 120 days?
6- Would someone interest in doing the SIU Apprenticeship Program have trouble getting approved for the MMC if they prescribed ADHD medication?

Classroom days count for half the time. So 5 days a week in class, 4 weeks in a month, 20 classroom days per month. 10 days at sea per month in the classroom....I think

The bigger issue I see if someone has ADHD and wants to continue taking their meds is going to be getting a 3 or 4 month supply to bring on a ship. Good luck finding a doctor willing to give you that much at once.
Class 350. 42 years later, CE now and not one regret. Went into the trainee program with an seventh grade education (failed out of 8th grade). Have tried imagine where my place in society would have been without…And I can’t.

I'm really interested in joining the program. For the math exams, what does it involve? Like if I have a basic understanding of algebra. Would that be enough or do I need to know trig or calculus? Love the vids and stay safe.

Quick question are the work days 12 hours on 12 off or 6 on and 6 off rotate
A regular operating ship will not be 12 on/off. Watches/your normal 8 hours will be split. Like 4-8 am and pm. Or 8-12 am and pm. 12-4 am and pm. Then if there’s overtime you’ll do it in one of the gaps between your normal 8 hours. Example: watch hours :4-8 am. Then overtime 8-12 am. OR Could be 12-4 pm.. then finish the rest of your mandatory 8 hours. 4-8 pm. There’s a video already made coming out soon with a diagram !
Can you smoke cigarettes or dip while at Piney Point?
Do you have to be a US citizen with a US passport? I’m not a citizen but I am a permanent resident.
Can you bring a vape and some bottles of juice for it?
Most ships don’t allow them anymore. But I’ve still seen guys with them.

Please please don’t waste your time with SIU apprentice program. Just get your OS and sail for a year and you’ll have an AB special. Pay is garbage during apprenticeship.
I don't mind the training and experience, life learning :) to survive the job
No argument here. It’s all personal situations. But 1 year of sailing SIU will still be a C-book taking whatever all-ports jobs are available while bidding against every other c-book in every other hall. The person that was in the apprenticeship for a year comes out a b-book + more qualifications and has bidding seniority over that c-book.
No waste of time, it's logical to do it, you end with B Book plus... Union Strong
