  • A documentary delving into the twisted tale of the Burke and Hare murders. Between them, William Burke and William Hare murdered 16 men, women and children in Edinburgh in the early 19th Century in a killing spree known as the West Port murders, selling the bodies to medical science. This is Burke and Hare's true and gruesome story.

    The quality that goes into these Ghastly Tales of Scotland episodes is fantastic; seems almost like the kind of thing you'd fine on Yesterday. Seriously underrated stuff here, sometimes truth is stranger, more interesting, and far more horrifying than fiction.

    This event has to be my favorite gruesome true crime story ever! Dunno why... just the whole mix of misled scientists, "evil" doctors not caring where these fresh corpses were coming from, and the ghoulish murderers who were farming humans like a modern day bot farms World of Warcraft items.
    The narrator also has that right touch of timbre in the voice to really get the chills going up your spine too!

    • @ghastlytales
      @ghastlytales  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Tony! I agree completely on this being one of the most gruesome true crime stories; greed, psychopathy and ambition all came together in unholy alignment here. I think the idea of the cheapness of human life to these people is what is most chilling. -Martin

    Dr. Knox may have suspected Burke & Hare were murdering subjects but simply ignored it because his need for cadavers for teaching was paramount, as well as knowing he was well insulated from any prosecution that may have resulted.

    Descendants of Hare and Laird must be out there and are unaware of their famous ( or infamous!) ancestors. Mrs Hare was nursing a child at the time of the trial ( as mentioned by Roughead in his famous trial series). Worth further investigation surely Ghastly tales! The most stunning thing is that they found 19 carved wooden puppets in tiny wooden coffins at west-port. There is this rumour they are made by Burke out of guilt.. And that he carved the last two in his cell. That's why i was thinking about 19 victims. Like i mentioned before it's a rumour and i don't know if it's true , thus i'm not a scotsman. But i delightfull documentary

    This is an excellent documentary, and very helpful to me as I'm doing research for a novel involving body snatching. On that note, do you think you might make a similar episode about those who stole corpses from graves (students and professionals)? There are lots of macabre tales about their nighttime escapades. Author Suzie Lennox would be a good source of information on that - she has a blog where she posts such stories: britainsforgottenbodysnatchers.blogspot.co.uk/

    • @ghastlytales
      @ghastlytales  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks, I'm glad you found it of interest! Yeah, there's definitely room for a full episode on the practice of body snatching itself. I probably won't do it for a while (for the third episode, I want to do something completely different in tone and era, one of Scotland's monster myths, perhaps), but this is a great suggestion and I will definitely keep it in mind. I had a look at that blog: fascinating stuff and a real wealth of information. Best of luck with the novel, and please let us know when it's done; I'd love to check it out. Cheers, Martin.
