Yup I remember that afternoon in the summer of 77 as a 7 year old. Our sleepaway camp took us on a field-trip to see the movie. Sitting in the dark theater and hearing the first note blast thru the theater as the Star Wars logo appeared on the screen and we knew we were in for something special. Even with the sequels which I saw in the theater but don't hold a fondness for hearing the first note and seeing the logo still gives me goosebumps and takes me back to that summer in 1977.

Another film that came out the following year that gave me that same feel during the opening credits was Superman. I remember seeing the remake in 2006 and they used the same original opening score and even though the remake was not nearly as good as the 1978 original even at age 36 I still got goosebumps as the first notes of John Williams score played.
The Superman score and the Star Wars score are still two of Johns best.

This is an example of why music education is so important in our schools and in our communities. I mean, John Williams started taking piano lessons when he was a kid, and also learned brass instruments. Along the way, he studied arranging and composing. He then began working as a pianist, arranger and composer. All through that time, he had teachers.
Then you take the musicians in the orchestra. They all started on their instruments with a teacher. When you hear people like this perform, you're listening to a combined hundreds of thousands of hours spent practicing. You're also listening to (probably) a combined hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on lessons and higher education. You're also looking at well over a million dollars' worth of instruments and instrument insurance.
My point is, that without music education, music teachers and the strive to become as good as you can be, concerts like this would not happen. It's this wondrous composer and these stunningly good musicians and their teachers who make it happen.

It is mid-summer 1977. We have heard so much about this movie from family and friends that we decided it's OK to take our oldest son, who was five, to see this movie. Our other son was just two at this time and much too young.
Thru our credit union at work my wife got reserved tickets so we would not have to wait in those looooong lines. As such when the theater opened we who had reserved tickets were allowed in 10 minutes before everyone else. So we got our popcorn, soda, and candy first, then we were escorted to the reserved seating area in the center of the theater with other families.
With our son sitting between us, the rolling script comes on and I read it to him. I can see he is transfixed, staring at the screen.
From that point on until the end of the movie some two hours later his eyes never left the screen. He hardly ate any popcorn or drank his soda!
Usually when we would take him to a movie, while it's playing he would ask us questions about what's going on.
Not this time. Other than a yip, or a laugh, or some other reaction, his eyes never left the screen!
When it was over, the people screamed and applauded with joy at what we had just seen.
    IT WAS AMAZING!!!
Now I have all the Star Wars movies on DVD and VHS. Full packages all.
But there is nothing like when I saw that first Star Wars movie with our son so many years ago!

When Superman caught Lois Lane with one hand and the helicopter in the other and the people down below on the street all cheered - so did we in the cinema. It was areal life enhancing experience. The very next day I was ordering the soundtrack records in my local music shop. I have them today and treasure them still a life enhancing experience thanks to Maestro Williams

It's a holdover from the traditional grand opera. Each main character gets their own theme and "upcoming arias" are hinted at in the overture. You basically compose backwards: first the final theme, then use fragments earlier (nowadays we might call it foreshadowing). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. John Williams is always open about his writing techniques. His ability to write complex dovetailing phrases and melody lines (counterpoint), while maintaining everything accessible, is absolutely sublime. Definitely my favorite film composer.

I don‘t say that Hans Zimmer doesn‘t do good movie soundtracks. I just say that in 50 years, no one will remember his music - and John Williams will be mentioned in the same breath as Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi an the other true giants in music history. Cheers from Germany ps: I remember waiting in line for three hours as a 10-year-old when „Return of the Jedi“ premiered…. John, you are the GOAT 🇩🇪🇺🇸

The music is such an important part of Star Wars, to say that this soundtrack is iconic is an extreme understatement.

In a very real and powerful way, absolutely, it spurs an emotional reaction no matter how many times you hear it

A couple of weeks ago I've had the honour of having been able to watch A New Hope live in concert and it was fantastic! And a year ago I've had the chance to see The Force Awakens live in concert and both were absolutely fantastic. You never focus on the soundtrack of a film until people play it live right in front of you.

These songs are making me so emotional right now. Some might not understand but this is beautiful to me, so much that it makes me cry. Thank you, maestro!

What a joy to hear John Williams' music played by this lovely orchestra. He's truly one of the greatest composers of our time
