    Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensors offer numerous benefits to tuners, not the least one of them being the ability to monitor, tune and even set up engine protection strategies on individual cylinders. But there is much more to EGTs than that - luckily Tuning Fork is here to educate us all.

    When engineers were testing the 250,000hp nuclear scramjet engine for Project Pluto, there was no temperature sensor known that could measure the exhaust temperature, instead during testing of the full size engine, they designed a calibrated optical system to gauge the temperature, to determine how well the internals of the engine reacted to full power for 20 minutes. Pluto was an armored cruise missile, the size of a locomotive that flew at Mach 3.5, at tree top height, and its shock wave would have killed people on the ground.

  • @rikupietila4241
    @rikupietila4241 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hello from Finland! You wanted to know what happened to your test engine? I am going to guess that you unplugged number 2 cylinder coilpack was unplugged and im basing my guess on that because your number 2 cylinder exhaust gas temp went down right away amd your short term fuel trim is trying to reduce the ammount of fuel.

  • @rompdude
    @rompdude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fact that you removed something do result in a temp drop on cylinder 2 means its likely the coil plug. But if you had not known the action that caused it, you could also think it was running rich. You could confirm this with the wideband as you have 2.

  • @linkems
    @linkems 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Good video, it looks like scott reached over to unplug the coil pack hence the drop in cylinder 2 egt. The wb barely ran leaner though, is this because the engine was at low load. Would it be much more obvious at higher engine loads?

    • @2secondslater
      @2secondslater 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unburnt fuel can displace oxygen in the exhaust and show a rich condition or a large volume of oxygen with no fuel can show a lean condition, depends on your misfire condition, you need to look at the total picture, not just what the 02 sensor is doing, to determine what is occuring.

    Question @Haltech; @16:27 in the example you give where you can turn off that cylinder #2 if the EGT goes above the set limit. Instead of turning off that cylinder can you in the ECU have the Fuel injector send additional fuel for added cooling of that particular cylinder??? & would this be more beneficial? I can theoretically see the benefit in this but just curious
    What went wrong? @20:47 The EGT 2 shows it's a lot cooler than the other cylinders and thus I'm going to say It got more fuel as a result of no spark which resulted in the cooler readings & the engine mist or poor running condition... ?
