      I use trackers for my main music composing. I only prototype the songs in FL Studio. Because I also do game dev and I appreciate music formats that play back in real time, they have a different, more raw quality to them than today's hyper-polished OGG soundtracks even for indie games.

    • @000jimbojones000
      @000jimbojones000 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Yeah and all because the guys that build the amiga said.. who needs a synth chip. Let us do just 4 digital sample channels so you can use every sample you want as an instrument. Thats also why the amiga sounds so different than any other computer of its time. The PC took this over when the soundblaster came out. But they only used it a short periot of time because in the mid 90s you got more and more ram and complete Songs could be played digital (as we have it today) so no need of tracked samples. One PC game that still used it very late was Unreal tournament btw.

    • @awesomeferret
      @awesomeferret ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's not how it works though. It was simply one of the more capable consumer grade machines of its time. Pretending that anything Commodore made was "ahead of its time" frankly requires a notable amount of ignorance of computer history, unless you are talking only about the context of consumer-grade computers (which you did not specify).

    • @000jimbojones000
      @000jimbojones000 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      well for a computer made in 1985 it was still a very different approach on the "sound" topic. No other pc could do what the amiga did in 1985. Maybe beside silicon gfx. Even the 16bit ara Apple couldnt do this. So it was indeed something special. And dont forget the amiga was also cheap. The first PC card that could do sample songs was the soundblaster in 1989. Of course you could buy digital and also very expensive studio samplers and operate them via Midi. But thats another story when we just talk about computers and mixing at home. For direct Midi the Atari ST was unbeatable in the 90s. Thats why most Studios had the Atari as a DAW at the end of the 80s and in the early 90s@@awesomeferret

      Pretty simple, really. Even I, not a musician, can use Protracker. You need audio samples, think .wav files for Windows, then roll the four tracks (some trackers like Octamed had eight, interpolating the four channels of the Amiga), and you just select a sample and press space to mark the track. There's of course a variety of effect to apply. Try it!

    On a task through TH-cam and came across this! Massive memories! Damn I miss OctaMED so much. With so many restrictions and limitations, I'd argue that the period of Amiga music production required so much more talent and intelligence than today's methods. From making tunes sound good despite the sample limitations, to actually sequencing it all together .It was difficult, repetitive work, but damn was it rewarding!
    Thanks for this video, buddy!
    Long live D&B!

    • @off1k
      @off1k  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I probably agree, in one sense it was easier on Amiga because there is only 4 channels, less options/effects and less to master equaling less to go wrong. In another way it's much more creativity required and mastering the software and sampling because of the 4 channels and less options to make the end result sound great.
      There's still a fairly decent Amiga scene today, here's a video of Amiga tunes released in 2023:

    really cool to see the samples,notes used in a small file, usually it's not possible with other formats except you share the project file but nobody does that, many videogames used to have samples separately too instead of a wave or compressed file, would be cool to see how commercial songs are made but that would also make people steal samples and i don't think record labels want that (for me it's not a problem)

      Within the program there's a "MOD2WAV" button top right corner. This will convert the song to a .wav file, only takes seconds to do it for you :))
      You can grab all the songs from here: amp.dascene.net/ Use the quick search top left corner.

    • @lk-music
      @lk-music ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were created by programmers for programmers (i.e. game music), the sample-banks occupied an optimised memory footprint, and the game code can both influence and react to the music. E.g. If you have 2 versions of the song in separate pattern lists, you can jump to the exact same place in the other version (e.g. more exciting for during a power a up), and the music being played would match the player events in real-time. Or vice versa, every time a sample was played you can write a callback to animate a game character in time with the music, e.g. put data into the command columns to represent different poses.
      For pure musical composition, possible, fun, but not the most musician friendly.

      you could connect two amigas with a serial cable, run protracker on both, and have 8 channels and double the memory/samples... press space and both of them would start playing, sometimes you'd have to try a couple of times for them both to be synced

    Wow, that birds tweeting at the beginning of that one song sounds a lot like the bird recording I did for an IT song I did in 2001. I recorded some birds tweeting outside my place for the intro of my song (Woodlander's New Dawn). Not saying it's the same, but damn that's close.

    • @off1k
      @off1k  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are many ways to do this, I'll give you a couple of examples :)
      Go to KeepVid (dot) com
      Insert the URL for this video into space provided and click the down arrow button on website, then select which quality video or audio only you want.
      Another option is to download original mod files from amp (dot) dascene (dot) net.
      load them into a mod player like BZR Player, ModPlug Player or something similar, most mod players have a save to wave function so you can make a wave file then convert that to MP3 with a conversion tool.
      Hope this helps :))

      @@off1k so the second way you mention is to actually make tracks yourself? On a windows laptop and able to record samples via a mic into the USB? Help!

    • @off1k
      @off1k  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@@JMJC1
      No, the second way is just to record the whole song from a mod player (not a tracker) but it doesn't record in real time, it only takes about 1 or 2 seconds save as wave, you're not recording individual samples.
      If you're after the individual samples, the best way imo is to download "Protracker clone" for Windows from here --> 16-bits.org/pt.php
      Beta version #3 download: (binaries updated 23.11.2018 18:03 GMT +2 - changelog)
      --> Windows 32-bit (Windows XP SP2 and later) - Palette editor tool
      --> macOS/OS X 64-bit (OS X 10.6 and later - read Mac notices below!) - Palette editor tool
      click on "Windows 32-bit" listed above once on the site ^^ to download the program, from there you can download the tunes from amp.dascene.net/ and load them into Protracker clone and have access to the samples :)

    • @JMJC1
      @JMJC1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@off1k thanks, I'll look at that. So how would you record a sample from another source, vinyl, tape or whatever to manipulate in one of these programs? Keen on making some simple '92 hardcore style stuff. Or would a FL type program be a better and easier way. Cheers.

    So, this is how drum and bass beats were made in the 90s?

    • @off1k
      @off1k  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some of it for sure, the Amiga was used with quite a few early commercial Drum & Bass.
      Not so much with Protracker, most used Octamed because it had midi support.

      Yeah no doubt, ST was pretty cheap compared to Amiga in the launch days ('85 to '87) and so it did have that niche music producing market more so than Amiga in the 80's, hard to say in the 90's though.
      By early DnB/Jungle years a midi box for Amiga was fairly cheap or better yet just build your own for next to nothing.

    • @reno5159
      @reno5159 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@off1k Yeah I'm lucky my Amiga came w a midi box. Would like to make my own still tho haha. Think by the time the A500 dropped it was cheaper. The Amiga clearly sold more units here tho, as you can see by looking at the used market lol. Probs cus it was good at everything. Music, graphics, gaming, documents.. ahead of its time. Atari defo marketed themselves towards musicians as well. Not sure of the sales numbers tbh. Ik alot of ppl who still use Cubase ST tho. Still just as functional as any modern daw. Especially if you already got samplers n synths in ur studio

    • @off1k
      @off1k  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reno5159
      There was a midi box for Amiga at launch in '85 for $50USD but then as MIDI become more popular for Computers (probably thanks to the ST) and the box's more sophisticated they actually went up in price for the most part until they started dropping again.
      Ofcourse this would depend in which world region.
      An excellent midi program for Amiga was Bars & Pipes Pro, I would say every bit as pro as Cubase and possibly more featured but it's interface imo not as nice.
