  • Disillusionment and doctoral education go together like Morecambe and Wise. But how can disillusionment be managed throughout a candidature? More importantly, how can a culture of satisfaction be created through the daily grind of research?

This is why I think of you as my ‘other’ supervisor. Such a useful one for students and academics.

Words of wisdom again Tara! I am becoming hooked on your Vlog...another distraction I fear, but so satisfying to hear what one suspects is true, put so eloquently. I need to get to sleep and wake early for my 2 hours of writing! Thank you.

Yes, another goodie Tara - Im at the start of my PhD proposal (again) after having realised that I had to throw out the baby with the bathwater!!! 3+ months of work down the tube and feeling totally disillusioned I treated myself to breakfast - away from my desk and the next thing -- BOING -- like a shot out of the blue, while writing my journal I found inspiration. A topic so much more interesting than my first. So yes, I totally agree - do something for yourself each & every day.

I am now at near-submission stage of my PhD thesis, which is in the next 3 weeks. One great learning result over 3 years PhD for me is producing a creativity to manage quotidian disappointment and self-control over anythings that worry me, which is truly not real. Peace, Light, & Love.... :)

What would i have done without these vlogs. I have a better perspective knowing that the issues I face in grad school are common issues with specific impacts on certain people in higher ed . I'm finding the affirmations, analysis and advice on point and helpful. Thank you , Tara! from a disillusioned doctoral student

Fantastic advice from an Australian treasure. I'm a technician at a university research lab and know the only ones that suffer more than us are the PhD students. Academia: The place where poor behaviour is normalised and the victims blamed.

Dear professor Tara, I really enjoy watching your vlogs and it brings me in good spirits to keep going and to not let go the goal of starting a PhD one day! I was wondering, however, what is it exactly that supervisors are looking for in PhD students. In other words: what makes you say 'yes' to a proposal of a(n) (unknown) student and what are some alarm bells that are going off with you when examine who to guide and who to refuse?
Please keep posting your vlogs, they are inspirational and will definitely change some peoples lives.
    Best wishes from Belgium!

Excellent stuff. Be careful though Tara as that little giggle is the very same as Dolores Umbridge's from Harry Potter! xx th-cam.com/video/qMHqxkRYt64/w-d-xo.html (@ 2.37)
