I'm now 73 and hardly a day goes by that I don't ride that train back to 69. I close my eyes , lean back and enjoy listening to one of the greatest voices of the day. The music industry lost a great talent when she left and the world lost out when she passed. REST EASY GAYLE ❤
She did what a lot of people who got screwed over by the record companies, and quit the business. She had looks, an incredible voice, and didn't want the runaround. I always had a crush on her. RIP Gayle!
A very hip and heartfelt ♥️ tune from the late 60's . I heard this tune on my transistor radio 📻 as a young boy in the mid 70's. This was a time when singing from your soul ment something. I will always embrace this song🎵🎶🎵🎤🎸🥁🎺 I can dig this🙂
Simply the BEST version of this song. Gayle had a great voice, a voice that made this song very passionate and emotional, lovers with a pleading heart can easily identify with this version, it's just the best there is.
This cover far surpassed the Shirelles original. The Beatles cover was too close to the Shirelles version. Very "bubble gum" sounding. This song really flies with a blues arrangement & vocal style. Gayle knocked it out of the park!
Yeah, Gayle McCormick was one of the greatest female rock & roll vocalists of all time, really, on the strength of this one song alone. The band was kicking ass behind her, too!
Zella Day is a new artist with old school Janis Joplin/Stevie Nicks vibes. Her voice is very raw and powerful like Gayle’s as well! She also, ironically, is known for doing several covers like Gayle.
I started to learn this song right after it came out in 69, when I was ten years old. My High School band played it in the battle of the bands in 74 … we had 3 guys from the schools marching band join us just for this sound to be right .! Needless to say we won that night with a guy on vocals that you could swear it was her singing with us … !!!! She was an incredible vocalist …. Thanks you for pouring your heart out in 1969 for us all ..!
Wow, great pipes and what a beauty! I always loved this song….especially the Beatles version….live at the BBC….just another reminder at how fab the 4 were….raw, tight, no production tricks…
When this came out,I was in love with her voice, her Passion, her Power, and now to see this video,to see HER,damn!!! My ears didn't lie to me!! R.I.P. Gayle!!
Been looking for this woman for a few years. I finally found her at least her grave. Her and the Klassmen where a teen club band here in St Louis. I use to Rock to them every Saturday Night. I went to Ritenour when she went to Pattonville just down the road They taught me to Rock. I was sad when she left St.Louis. But enjoyed her records. RIP
The time were singer's/bands had to preform live, better than they did on wax with no help from movie and TV technology....amazing to hear such pure music!!!!
Adele tried to do a cover of this song, but it belongs to Gayle. Nobody will ever touch her on it. RIP to one of the greatest and largely underrated voices of the entire rock and roll era.
Yes Gayle is great & Very talented.... The Original song belongs The Shirelles .... This was a cover Though More Rock n Roll sounding then The Shirelles it's sad that they weren't a bigger group success wise..... i actually have this version downloaded on my phone & also on vinyl The Beatles, Adele & Haley Reinhart also do great covers ... (Hayley's cover sounds more like SMITH's)
I think Gail was NOT promoted enough to become a success ! She was under rated but DID HAVE huge talent. They simply Missed the boat with Gail. Very Sad indeed !!
I thought that she wasn't as successful because kept trying to present her as a hippie chick and she was wanting to see as a lot more than that as a Dusty Springfield..
A few years back I collected the album, now listening again it still holds up. WOW...what a voice....I think the only reason this got 'burried' in rock/pop history is that so many wonderfull records came out...it is sad that not everyone could join in the way as it should have been. It is a song that begs to be covered by someone with a big voice.....
as a kid,we used to listen to this stuff on WLS out of chicago. it was also great to hear it as we would walk thru the midways when the fairs and carnivals were going on. god.. i want to go back home to my wonder years of the mid 60s to mid 70s..
I totally agree fantastic voice I remember when this song came out it was popular here in Baltimore fall 1971 but I have those two Smith albums great great music from 1969 1970 group called Smith and minus Plus still sound good
i am very, very sad at this time. i never got to meet you, gayle, though you lived somewhere close to me, just minutes away. i wish that you had not been so reclusive after you came home to st. louis from L.A., but i respect that that is how you wanted it. you've taken your last breath, but the voice it powered will live on long, long afterward. farewell, R.I.P., and may we finally meet in the next life.
I remember when I was about 15 years old I played this 100 times over and over when I was home alone one night. I must have been in love at the time lol.
[Baby It's You] It's not the way you smile that touched my heart. It's not the way you kissed that tears me apart. Many, many, many nights go by. I sit alone at home and cry over you. What can I do? Don't want nobody, nobody Cause, baby, it's you. Baby, it's you. Is it true what they say about you? They say you'll never, ever, never be true. It doesn't matter what they say. I know I'm gonna love you any old way. What can I do? What 'bout you? Don't want nobody, nobody. Baby, it's you. Baby, it's you. Baby. It doesn't matter what they say. I know I'm gonna love any old way. What can I do? What 'bout you? I don't want nobody, nobody. Baby, it's you. Baby, it's you. Don't leave me alone. Come on home. Baby, it's you. Baby, it's you. You know I need your lovin' You know I love you. Baby, it's you. Baby...
In 1974 i was 14 years old it was the first time I ever heard this song when i was 17 my girl friend of 15 sang this song to me to show me how much she loved me we both looked much older and i loved her to but her mother broke us up and i lost track of her but I always kept her in my heart about 7 years ago i ran into her we were both single ? But she didn't remember me it broke my hart and neather one of us look our age we are in our 60s and could pass for 40s funny how things happen 8/20/24
Wifey didn't like her, yet she was like her in the 60's / 70's. Guys, after 35 years she opens up. Talk to your lady and never work so hard as to miss everything!
They say things happen in threes-case in point-this track! Music by Burt Bacharach-Lyrics by Hal David performed by STL’s very own Gayle McCormack! Equals Three Times the Genius! What songwriting & singing!👌
This was a Stand-Out hit instantly and they were in a class by themselves but what ever became of them? Gayles vocals were second to none. The whole band was excellent IMHO. Listen to their cover of The Weight.
This is really a blast from the past - I remember it well - The album cover looked like she was sitting on a toilet seat - but probably not. She was one hell of a ssinger and could really blast it out - I wonder if her vocal cords stood up to the wear and tear
I'm now 73 and hardly a day goes by that I don't ride that train back to 69. I close my eyes , lean back and enjoy listening to one of the greatest voices of the day. The music industry lost a great talent when she left and the world lost out when she passed. REST EASY GAYLE ❤
One of the greatest voices? Um, no; not even close.
Me too, I'm 66
The woman has some pipes! I'm 73 also.
I've always loved their version.
She did what a lot of people who got screwed over by the record companies, and quit the business. She had looks, an incredible voice, and didn't want the runaround. I always had a crush on her. RIP Gayle!
Gayle McCormick's raw and powerful vocals has made this song immortal. At least in my heart.
I 'vee always loved this song.i didn't know of gayles death. I listen to this
Song all the time.
Totally agree. Her voice is perfect for this song, and the bluesy Hammond organ really nails it.
I love this classic pop/rock, seriously. The old cynical me remembers the emotions evoked in this song.
This cover far surpassed the Shirelles original. The Beatles cover was too close to the Shirelles version. Very "bubble gum" sounding.
This song really flies with a blues arrangement & vocal style. Gayle knocked it out of the park!
I still have this album that I bought in '69 when I was 15 years old. I'll never get rid of it. What a great song. Gayle was just fantastic!
Can I have it lol!
Nam Vet , Tom
I was 7 years old when I first heard this song. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever heard. I’m now 56 and I still love it!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I am close to 80 and it sounds really good
Loved this song and still do! Now April 2024!
I can understand why
Rest in peace, Gayle. You had one of the purest voices in rock.
What a talent!!!!
The record company wasted a superstar.
I’m just glad theres a real live version on film
As a music fan of 80's 🎶....this is mind blowing! She may be the best singer ever! Just WOW!
Yeah, Gayle McCormick was one of the greatest female rock & roll vocalists of all time, really, on the strength of this one song alone. The band was kicking ass behind her, too!
they are faking it
Not the totally bored drummer!
Don't forget the original by the Shirelles..The original classic.
I've enjoyed this song for many years and the video just takes you back to a great year - 1969. RIP Gayle.
RIP Gayle. Your superb vocals on this song demonstrates great power and beauty. Who can fill your shoes now?!?!?!?
Zella Day is a new artist with old school Janis Joplin/Stevie Nicks vibes. Her voice is very raw and powerful like Gayle’s as well! She also, ironically, is known for doing several covers like Gayle.
Gayle McCormick and this song make this the best rock group in history
What?

Loved this song, and Gayle McCormick, since it was on the radio in 1969. Amazing live recording. What a talent, Gayle, RIP sweetie.
I wanna go back to 1969 when I was a teenager this song takes me there Thanks Gayle and talented band members.
Wow, great pipes and what a beauty! I always loved this song….especially the Beatles version….live at the BBC….just another reminder at how fab the 4 were….raw, tight, no production tricks…

Gayle Annette McCormack was beautiful inside and out. What a talent. Died 67 years old on 03/01/16. Goodbye gorgeous. RIP
I remember being impressed by this on the TV in my grandparent's living room back then. Weird memories, with so much in between.
Im from St. Louis County area , and wished I could have met her. RIP Gayle....

‘The rock of St. Louis’
RIP

Love this song 🎵 ❤ 💕

One of my all time favorite song. Good memories
Who knew Burt Bacharach wrote this? RIP Burt, and RIP Gayle, with thanks for the best version of Burt's song.
I did.
RIP Gayle...what a fantastic singer!
Ll tb for vó v blr
Yea great singer. If you look closely looks like the drummer is floating high. 😨
Had the biggest crush on her,,,back in the day. R.I.P. Gayle
THIS is the best of all videos of Smith performing this song. Such energy!! LOVE it!!
I just close my eyes and listen to Gayle, and remember that not only is she this beautiful woman ,but also she has this powerful voice.
why didn't she make it huge? so beautiful, talented and passionate!
She couldn't handle the realities of the business end of the industry.
I think Gail was NOT promoted enough to become a success ! She was under rated but DID HAVE huge talent. They simply Missed the boat with Gail. Very Sad indeed !!
Same with Chi Coltrane
I thought that she wasn't as successful because kept trying to present her as a hippie chick and she was wanting to see as a lot more than that as a Dusty Springfield..
Lead Soprano for the St Louis Symphony Gail had the talent, but in those days you had to do something extra for the producers and Gayle said No.
Best version of this song I've ever heard
Purely classic... warms my heart everytime i hear it.
God was she great, and gorgeous to boot.!
Tarantino finds the forgotten gems and artists. TY QT.
A few years back I collected the album, now listening again it still holds up. WOW...what a voice....I think the only reason this got 'burried' in

wow... so powerful live! Found the album on vinyl and gave it a chance. Was absolutely blown away!
Gayle McCormick RIP
RIP - Gayle McCormick
The 80s were simply impossibly too much fun from what I can remember
Epic failure on the part of the record industry. Gayle had the raw talent to be up there with Linda Rondstadt, Dusty Springfield, and Emmylou Harris.
Who?
@@msergio0293 thanks for being the village idiot.
@@kevkoomer who?
I agree. On her first solo album there is a gret song "Gonna Be alight now". It's always been a closet favorite of mine.
I totally agree fantastic voice I remember when this song came out it was popular here in Baltimore fall 1971 but I have those two Smith albums great great music from 1969 1970 group called Smith and minus Plus still sound good
Oh wow I graduated in 1969 this one got away from me she's a beautiful California blonde
She was from a town near St Louis
R.I.P. Gayle McCormick 1948 - 2015 :-(
Absolutely fantastic. 😊
I remember watching this as a youngster and Falling in Love❤️!
I'd put them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their only hit - it's just so great!
She’s stunning and that voice !!!
classic! I still have the 45!
RIP Gayle...we'll miss you....

Cilia Black brought me here with her version. I recall this songstress well. This is the best and most powerful version....by far.
❤
This is enormous talent and vocal. I am dumbfounded however. The audience acts like this is some kind of cure for insomnia.
Allen Rogers: I believe I was 13 & LOVED this song. I enjoyed the way the vocalist really belted it out !
Beautiful song, singer, and girl.
Forgot about this song. Very well done.
I remember when I was about 15 years old I played this 100 times over and over when I was home alone one night. I must have been in love at the time lol.

What a great song, power and passion by Gayle. Always one of my favorite songs.
Wifey didn't like her, yet she was like her in the 60's / 70's. Guys, after 35 years she opens up. Talk to your lady and never work so hard as to miss everything!
