    what I found most interesting about the spark vs purpose mistake from Joe is that his spark is in fact jazz piano, but his purpose was revealed throughout the movie when he accomplished what no other mentor did (and there were some great names dropped as previous mentors of 22) - his purpose is to teach and help others find their spark. And it is interesting to me because he's already been doing that on Earth at the beginning of the movie, he was just too blinded by his chase of jazz playing to realize xd

    • @CraftingMenace
      @CraftingMenace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      See thats something I like about this movie, it never says what his spark is. It very well could be jazz. It could be teaching. Could not be. Maybe its something else entirely.

    • @chrischan2106
      @chrischan2106 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes exactly, i felt the subtext of the messaging was that his purpose was mentoring all along, which is why he could guide 22 the way none of the other "greats" could do. He's lived life down in the dumps but could appreciate all the little joys in life. And that's what makes life worth living.

    • @icarue993
      @icarue993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hard disagree. I say what a spark is the reason they find for living, and while Joe really REALLY likes Jazz and music, it's not his entire reason for living. And also life has no inherent purpose. Purpose was not one of the things needed for the earth pass, hence no life comes with an inherent purpose for life. The purpose of your life is whatever you feel like it gives purpose to your life. Hence why at the end, they just show Joe leaving his appartment. His life is not set in stone, his purpose is not set in stone and can be whatever you want to be.

      Here's how I view who was Pixar's target audience over the last few years, I guess starting with Coco:
      Pixar has been around since 1995 and the kids at the time are officially adults now so I guess they feel like the movies that were made for the past 5 years are targeted more for the adults that grew up watching and loving Pixar installments (mostly for the sake of nostalgia) than kids who enjoy Pixar simply because for its animations... That's just my guess.

    33:50 I’ve got to say, as a happily single girl, the scene of Joe sitting alone at the diner hit hard both times. The first time because that’s exactly how I fear people see me when I’m out eating alone, the second because it captured exactly what it feels like for me when I’m out enjoying something by myself. When I go out, I’m not thinking “oh, poor me, I’m alone.” I’m thinking about how nice it is to be out, how good whatever I’ve ordered is. I’m just enjoying the moment. A life lived as a single can still be a very satisfying, wonder-filled life. Seeing that portrayed in the movie, even in a small thing like simply enjoying a piece of pie, was very special to me. 🥧 ❤️

    I have a theory that when souls go to earth they don’t necessarily go into humans. We’re shown that it’s possible with Joe, and although the cat’s soul is the shape of a cat, Joe’s body is the shape of Joe. Therefore, souls all start looking the same, but conform to the shape of their host. That means that 22 could be literally any creature on earth. It also explains why animals in A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Up, and The Good Dinosaur all are sentient. They also can’t speak to humans, like in Soul (except for Up, because of technology invented by Charles Muntz and The Good Dinosaur, although I believe Spot simply reacts to the sounds Arlo makes, like dogs to humans). Souls who are born into animals simply live as that animal, but when human souls are transferred into animals like in Brave and Soul, it’s strange to them. I think this is a way Soul can fit into the Pixar Theory.

    • @rebeccama7672

    • @AdamDGoff
      @AdamDGoff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@monte7303 it’s interesting. Because I would initially say they don’t have souls because they’re inanimate. But you CAN’T tell me WALLE doesn’t have a soul. At different points, the Jerrys who control where souls go may have started distributing them to animals and machines. Maybe without Terry knowing, since she’d probably object. I don’t know her motivations. But yeah, I think the toys do have souls.

      So basically 22 arrives on earth, is born, grows up and then commits suicide because their soul has some skewed view of life, and thinks that “just living life” is a thing you can actually do, and not just something Joe had the LUXURY of doing because he was an established, talented person with purpose, that they only experienced because they were momentarily in his body.
      The film establishes quite clearly that 22 is “purposeless” and will not have any particular skills, talents, or passions; things you need to actually be successful and “live” in our society.
      Just gonna end up a lost soul again 🤷‍♂️

    I’ve seen so many complaints about the ending to the movie, it being too “ambiguous” about the fates of the characters, has really seemed to perplex people more accustomed to Pixar’s usual more concrete, emotional endings. But Soul isn’t your average Pixar film. Cause frankly it’s better than that. If the ending had been clean cut and showed exactly what happened next, that would have absolutely gone against everything the films message stood for. It’s not about the big things in life, it’s about finding the joy in every moment. Joe stepping out that door shows how no matter what he does, regardless of it’s prestige or significance, it will fill him with happiness and purpose. It’s not a typical ending, cause it’s not a typical movie. Life goes on, it can be great, it can be bad. But as long as you find the joy in those little moments, you’ll keep finding a reason to step out that door. It’s so refreshing to see Pixar be this bold with there stories again. For them to go against the more formulaic path and go for something more adult and abstract. Soul, and I mean this in all sincerity, is my favorite, and in my opinion, the best film Pixar has ever made. I adore it.

The way that he knew for a fact that he couldn’t get to Earth but would go anyway just to give her any reassurance that he could to comfort this person who isn’t even a person yet really got me. I think it was the compassion that hit hard for me. It was just one of those beautiful Pixar scenes that don’t need dialogue to be amazing, just music. The hug from Inside Out. The montage from Up. The look on Sully’s face when he leaves Boo says it all. These moments are where it really lies for me and Pixar can do it like no other.

    As a pianist, the thing that really caught my attention and made me appreciate this movie was the piano being in sync. When Joe pressed a key on the piano, that's the note that sounded. There was real coordination between the animation and music department that really doesn't happen very often in animated films. I'm used to seeing animated musicians completely out of sync with the music, but not here. Makes me love Pixar even more for their attention to details.

    I actually did cry near the end when Joe realized that his life wasn't meaningless after all. Like you said, the first time we see the "highlights" of his life, he thinks they are worthless. But the second time the point is all those times were special and that is where the magic of life lies. It is kind of like an animated "It's a Wonderful Life" where he realizes all that made him happy. My children thought the point is that Joe's spark was actually to be a teacher, not a performer. And I think the writers/animators did a fantastic job of pointing out all the small moments of life that are special with 22. When she says her life can be about walking or looking at the sky and Joe says, "That's just regular old living," it shows that he is missing what can make life magical in the mundane. And, only because my mom was a music teacher for 39 years, I can let you know that the frequency of a concert A is 440 not 113. (It's literally her license plate "A 440")

    I have a lot of friends that I talk to when the latest movies come out. We usually have conversation much like these review videos, discussing which characters, plot points, and moments we did or did not like and what, in general, we thought about the movie
    but with *Soul,* nearly every conversation I had about this movie spiraled back to *the meaning of life,* a subject that sounds so immense and intimating, and yet it took this animated movie to bring me some of the deepest conversations I've yet to have with some friends that I have known for *years*
    so, in my educated opinion, yes, it is a revolutionary movie.It provided a new, really interesting perspective on life, and it has quite literally changed everyone that I know that saw this movie

    The moment that broke me was when Joe was playing the piano and replaying all of 22’s “ordinary” life moments in his head. My dad, who was sitting next to me, whispered: that’s what life is all about, the “little things.” I realized, in that moment, that this was the perfect quarantine movie, and tears came streaming down.
    Everyday life during a pandemic is terrible, and at least for me, my perception of time is way off: a week ago feels like years ago and I can’t even remember what I did yesterday. We remember the special little moments, like blue sky and music and love. Since watching it last night, I have started looking at life - especially during quarantine - in a completely new way,
    The morning before I watched the film, I was dreaming about my Disney trips and thought about how, right when I wake up the morning I leave to go to the happiest place on Earth, I tell myself to truly live in the moment and be mindful so I can remember everything and savor every millisecond of my time I Walt Disney World. And then I realized, why don’t I live like this all the time? Live every moment like it’s special and is something to be celebrated so that when there are truly special moments, you are fully open and ready to experience them with everything that you are.
    Thank you, Disney and Pixar, for creating another story that will stay with me forever. ✨

The range has many of Earth's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest, at the border between Nepal and China”), souls aren’t stuck to just one gender, and both Monsters Inc and Soul were directed by Pete Docter, I think that would be a cool theory and 22 could be either a boy or girl that was screaming in the Himalayas. 😅

I was constantly trying hard to get to my goals and ignoring the present. with the false illusion of happiness when I reach my goal. However, everything crumbled when I didn't get to where I wanted and found myself wasting an entire year in search of something that all ready had. just every small moment of laugh with my family and friends has worth. this movie was a proof to that. all the frustrations and anxieties that I was feeling faded a way just like that.

      Maybe, due to time being irrelevant, 30 has already been on earth during the earth segments of the film. Maybe 22 is already alive within the world due to being dropped off 50 years before Joe was alive. Or maybe 22 years after him.

    I have been trying to find the answer to this question but haven't found one.
    "Where does Wall-E fit into the theory"
    I see many theorists state that it's placed around the year 2100 however we see that the humans in WALL-E before leaving earth were more human looking rather than animated. We could argue evolution however the closest film in the time line to WALL-E is Inside Out (if I'm not mistaken) which is only 100 years before the axion departs. Humans cannot evolve that quickly to look more real. I do believe Pixar does this on purpose. We do however see on the axion that there is evolution occurring through the changes in the features of the captain. They turn from more human looking into animated. Why has Pixar made them look human? Does it mean its somewhere completely away from the year 2100 as these features aren't seen in other films.
    As well as this we know that they have been on the axion for 700 years however as they travelling through space the time they experience might be different to the time on earth. This is because time is relative. The closer they travel to the speed of light the quicker the time is on earth compare to the axion. So e.g. 1 Month on the Axion could be equivalent to 1 year on earth. So it may not be 700 Earth Years and could be completely different. I would like to hear your thoughts on this
