  • Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Employee Vinny S. shares his personal story of September 11th in his 9/11 Tribute Museum presentation of "We Were There" onstage at the National September 11th Memorial Museum.
Working out of both JFK airport and the 72nd floor of the WTC at the time, Vinny was not in the WTC when the attacks unfolded. His three best friends, however, were there. He remembers a phone call made to his friends that morning, and after one of them abruptly hung up, he knew that something was wrong. His story tells of the emotions that he felt that day, how he and his friends have tried to move on with their lives, and how the attacks have inspired him to focus on what is really important: time spent with loved ones and family.

As a widow who lost my husband in a tragic plane crash, my heart breaks for this man. To lose his wife and have school-age schoolchildren is so hard. I am thankful his friends survived. Dear Lord, bless the loved ones who did not make it.

3:13 "Vinny I gotta go the building's going over I got a go!" Hearing such a message like that and thinking your friend just died that day... Driving home alone thinking to yourself and letting your emotions out" For me that last sentence from my best friend would haunt me for the rest of my life. Thinking in of his last moments alive and to his very quick death, I would free helpless, and feel like he may be gone but forever in my heart... Taking everything he was about, said, and done together... Thinking for a few days he is forever gone and all your brethren but then suddenly hearing the news he got out alive with some if not all of your other friends. I would be beside myself. seeing him again and to hear new words that you thought you would never hear ever again in this life...
"Hey Vinny, it's good to see you again"
