As a gerbil owner I think they are better than hamsters. (my personal opinion please don’t get offended Hamsters are still cool)

Why do you think they are better? I've only had hamsters but I'm considering gerbils. How long have your gerbils lived?

@@Lucy-lp9kv I prefer them because they are more active an I feel like you can interact with them more than hamsters my gerbils are currently about 2 years old I think and they can sometimes live to four I think

@@bobthenovuswarden6242 thank you. I find it hard loosing hamsters so regularly. I currently have guinea pigs instead. Though thinking of getting gerbils instead in the future

Gerbils sing (in very soft chirps) and they are amazing architects, building gravity-defying tunnels and arches. Also, because of their long tail, you can gently place your thumb over the base of their tail to give them a sense of security when moving your hand with a gerbil aboard, reducing the risk of accidentally dropping them. Also, since they are social and live in pairs, they often occupy themselves running around and playing together, which is a lot of fun to watch. I've had both hamsters and gerbils, and I love both, but I personally prefer Gerbils. Be warned, though, a Gerbil can jump a lot higher than a hamster, and they are quite the intelligent little escape artists.

@@Quagthistle Wow I never knew they could sing I only thought they were capable of chirping. Also you are very right about that last bit with them jumping and escaping any mesh playpen that I have put them in was destroyed by chewing or they just climbed/jumped over it.

I have owned 7 gerbils. They are amazing little animals with tons of personality.
The main advice I would give someone is do not listen to the pet shop, do your own research and buy everything before getting gerbils. And make sure your sand isn’t dusty. ❤

I loved having gerbils. I had a male pair until they died, and then a female pair. The females pooped a LOT more, wow, because they're the ones who are supposed to lay down scent. I had them in a giant acrylic snake tank and they had all wood furniture and wheel. I didn't handle them at all, really, because I wanted them to remain gerbils, but they would eat out of my hand and allow me to clean their tank, etc. without biting me.

I had once owned a gerbil... I didn't keep it for that long. I ended up returning it back to the pet shop. Glad I did... It was alone and probably needed a friend. I then got rats but I was allergic to them. Now I have guinea pigs and I love them too much. They're tons of work but worth it in my opinion. Im just curious how life could have gone with my poor lonely gerbil that I once had... But I'm pretty happy with my guinea pigs. 😊

Gerbils need very specific cage setups compared to other rodents. I would encourage your friend to at least get a 10 gallon tank and a topper for it. Quality Cage is a good online store for ordering cage toppers. You can easily cover up cage floors just by cutting up some cardboard boxes and weighing them down with equipment like their food bowls, wheels, or small house. If their gerbil lives in it's cage alone introducing them to younger gerbil of the same gender is often better cause the adult gerbil doesn't see them as much of a threat and to the younger gerbil it is more or less like moving back in with parents for them. Expecting a gerbil to live alone is like expecting a human to stay in covid lockdown forever and never leave the house, eventually it just leads to feeling lonely and potential health problems.
