  • The apistogramma borellii is a hardy species of dwarf cichlid that is great for beginners and experts alike. It has beautiful streaks of blue and red on its' face, a stunning blue body, and bright yellow fins. This fish can tolerate a wider range of parameters than other dwarf cichlids such as german blue rams or apistogramma agassizii. They work great in planted aquariums and community aquariums. There is a good chance that they will breed as well if they are given a proper set up.

    I think it’s neat that they come from such a cool water habitat, they are some of the very few apistos that do not need a heater.

    Great set-up. Whilst researching apistos years ago I came across scientific papers from Argentina in which researchers found A. borellii in moderately hard water with a neutral pH. So they don't particularly require soft, acidic water as many other species do. They don't like nitrates so your substrate and decor are doing a fantastic job in denitrifying the waste. Well done.

      If your pH is 7 or above and you have borellis and have high tds and very hard water they're gonna die 😂 at that ph the tank has to be perfectly clean they're very sensitive to ammonia . Dwarf corydoras , rasboras and tetras are hardier than apistogramma borellis.

      @@deepinthemangroves208 That should not necessarily be the case, as the nitrification fauna (bacteria, archaea, fungi) tend to function more efficiently at pHs above 7.5, therefore ammonia should be immediately oxidized into the aquarium's nitrification process. As long as the nitrates are kept low, the fish will be Ok. In hard waters some breeders report low fecundity which we presumed to be due to premature calcification of the egg membrane and low sperm motility. Interestingly, I came across an old article in a magazine from the 1950s where the author reported his breeding success with rams, which he kept in alkaline water. Rams, as we know, are very sensitive to water quality, so tank hygiene has to be scrupulous. However, I would not normally recommend keeping dwarfs in water above pH 7 unless the aquarist was extremely knowledgeable in water chemistry.

      @@zachcanaperi You're welcome. Just one question, do you have co2 in this tank? I've never been able to have a tank without co2 that doesn't grow algae like mad. How do you keep yours so nice and clean?

    • @zachcanaperi
      @zachcanaperi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@missed-connections to be honest this tank was pretty new so the algae blooms hadn’t really started yet lol. But doing a lot of water changes(once or twice a week), making sure your lighting isn’t too bright or on for too long, and getting some otocinclus can keep things somewhat under control.
