Just wanted to clear up some things I've been seeing in the comments.
First of all I wanted to discuss some of the issues we had with the car, as I feel they aren't accurately covered in the video.
Regarding the ECU - We mentioned that we couldn't access the ECU. This is down to us not having the software/expertise to sort this for ourselves at the circuit. After the event, some small tweaks to the car and it runs perfectly again.
Regarding the design of the exhaust. We knew that this might have some risks (this was advised by mtech) but we wanted to try it anyway. We've already made changes that should help us sort that for future rounds.
The car is a work in progress and we're still learning. Building a hair dresser car into a time attack weapon isn't easy but we're making awesome headway. Onwards to Oulton!
These are the weekends you will learn the most from. But the car looks good, sounds great, and looks a hoot to drive. She'll be right!
Let me know if you ever want to come to Ireland 🇮🇪 and do a few laps of Mondelo some time or dip your toe is some Tarmac Rallying 😊
Exhaust definitely needs to be redesigned, heat is one thing, but imagine if you develop an exhaust leak in there, even a little one and the fumes start to get into cabin, you wont smell it, just gradually going to get dizzy until you pass out. Can't stress enough how dangerous it could be, especially on the track doing high speeds. Long story short, no exhaust in the cabin is a must next step for Minty. Be safe out there Jimmy!
@@anonimas123456789 The plan was to relocate the exhuast system under the car, though a previous engineer Jimmy apointed insisted on the exhausts exit there so packaging was a real pain. The panel is actually screwed closed and sealed as a firewall component by design, but we see in the video this has been changed to some quick release clamps (not by us!). We plan,m due to time constraints, to place the silencers externally for now and seal the firewall perminantly.
Needs a fuckload more downforce if it's strictly for time attack
Jimmy's a real racer now. He's built a car that is trying to kill him.
'60s F1 much?
Seems the coolest and most fun to drive cars want to do that
He didn't build it, and had big dramatic hissy fit at the guys that did over a minor issue, usually a fan, but not today.
@@Scratch323 didn't see any dramatic hissy fit. didn't watch the whole video but saw the fire and hearing 400 degree in a box in the cabin. that's not ideal, i thought he took it well.
@@Scratch323 Where's the hissy fit my guy?

Love how the marshals get a spin out, nice little 'Thank You' for the work they do.
100%
They deserve it considering how important they are, lets let them have a bit of fun
As someone who works at a racetrack, I really appreciate seeing the marshal hot laps, I feel some times track workers get overlooked by the general public and this is a good way to thank them
It's such a cool idea, loved seeing it
Big love to all the marshalls around all the tracks around the world. Without these madlads we wont be able to do this sport safely
Its not safe

Jimmy, you have made my kids day uploading this. They were waving to you just before Druids and they have been captured on your camera, showed them and are so impressed they have seen themselves! You are now their favourite TH-camr! Thank you for all your content :)
An wholesome moment
Guess you could say your first race with Minty was “lit”
🤦♂
Wait, who is first race?
@@worstenbroodje6832 ?
@@worstenbroodje6832 I am first race
but please don't.
To have it get hot enough to cause thermal shielding to spontaneously combust is really saying something.
Edit: I didn't realize there were so many expert car builders on TH-cam. There's seems to be a good bit of dog piling in the comments and I wanted to make it clear that was not my intention. A couple things...
- I was mistaken. That is not thermal wrap just the charred remains of the rubber sheath that comes on all O2 sensor wiring. Thermal wrap is resistant to 2000F radiant heat. Everything else in that area would be burning long before that if that's what it was.
- To those questioning the build quality, you need to understand that there is no formula when it comes to building Unlimited TT cars. EVERYTHING is uncharted territory and without a bottomless R&D budget the only way to dial the car in is through trial and error. If you read Matt from M Tuned's reply to my comment you'll see the excessive heat in the cabin was not an issue until the heat wrap was added to the side pipe. (perfect example of trial and error)
- Being that it was this cars first real shakedown things could've definitely gone way worse. I have all the faith in Jimmy and the guys to get this car dialed in.
Nah, that's not really the impressive when the bloody exhaust is in a box inside the cabin. Why the hell are the EGTs so high? Who built this thing?
@@russelljimenez4715yeah this seems like some absolutely terrible design, this was so predictable
First thing I said when I saw it was “That’ll be too hot”… Also to go out and have this issue in the first race means the engine hasn’t been run properly as the exhaust has to get very very hot to do that
It was intended to have aero ducting for cooling of this chamber but time didn't allow it to happen unfortunately. As Jimmy said, it was never "meant" to race like this (we advised against this exhaust design and instead considered aero fixes for cold air flow) but time pressures made that not happen. During testing we also didn't wrap the external exhaust, so that acted as a heat sink keeping the box temps lower - something the guys (not us at M-Tech) decided to do after the car left us to stop legs getting schorchio. Melting rubber and fire are two very different things :) If the aero as planned was in place, this would never have happened :)
@@hazzabojangs That makes sense. I partially said that in jest and don't agree with the replies questioning the quality of the build. I looked at it again and what I thought was wire heat shielding is just the really charred rubber sheath that gets put on the O2 sensor wiring. Thermal wrap is good for like what... 2000F radiant heat? If it was getting that hot Jimmy would have much bigger issues. I had a similar situation the first time my car saw a track. I had wrapped my exhaust all the way back to just past the downpipe. While it was great for reducing engine bay temps it wasn't until I really pushed the car that the section just past the wrap got so hot that it started to melt the rubber soundproofing on the floor pans. It didn't help that I stopped the wrap right at a gap in the factory aluminum heat shielding. Once I wrapped it past that point the issue went away. Overall I'd say it wasn't too bad for his first real shakedown and you guys have some solid feedback going forward. It definitely could have gone way worse. Their uniqueness is what makes time attack cars so cool but that also makes them pretty much uncharted territory as far as building them goes.
Fire, epic laps, "bum" written in camera sensor spots...this one had everything!
I really appreciate you showing the ups and downs of all your endeavors. It's good to see the you conquer and overcome all the obstacles you have. It's easy to only share the cool and awesome moments like in other car channels. yet you show the reality of being a driver and developing your own project. it's honestly inspirational. much love Jambly!
Minty looking fantastic. Small ergonamic issue noted on pedal cam, every now and again, the inside of your foot catches the edge of the brake pedal as you depress the throttle, you may have enoough deadzone for it not to be an issue, but even so trimming that bottom right hand corner of the brake pedal pad may prevent accidental brake activation in the future. Stay positive things are supposed to fall apart on a shakedown :)
Yeah I noticed that too. We'll get it sorted :)
Fair play to you and Mtech in getting the car to Brands, although it's evident that with more time available a proper trackday shakedown would've highlighted the issues you encountered, but "it is what it is". 😉
Constructive feedback: No PAS on a car intending to run wide slicks and aero was never going to be an easy drive, particularily if the original steering geometry was engineered with PAS in mind. Hopefully a simple retrofit for the guys, or conversion to an electric column (although more involved?).
With the exhaust running along the sill, I'd consider moving the silencers out of the car and down there instead, like the Nismo GTR GT3's did. Most of the heat will be from the gasses being restricted through the boxes, so having just the downpipe in the car should reduce it, plus it'll give more room and be easier to insulate with multiple layers of wrap and proper shielding rather than reflective tape.
Fuel debris is a concern on something with only 1-2hrs of running. Either a contamination in the fuel drums/cans, the mechanical pump in the supply drums (have seen these not be compatible with race fuels and literally dissolve), fuel tank foam incompatible with race fuel, or an oversight during the build where braided lines weren't thoroughly cleaned before final assembly. Worth getting the injectors flow-tested just in case any fine debris made it past and may have partially blocked them (fuel pressure will read correct, but the injectors simply won't be delivering the fuel).
A bit surprised the mapper wasn't at this first event- even with days on the dyno, an engine at this level will always need tweaks to ensure it's 100%, and access to the datalogging should be a given for Gav and the team for diagnosis purposes. No reason why a tuner can't remotely log-in in this day and age with ease of internet access.
Hope you guys can get on top of things for Oulton, will be watching the live timing with interest!
Good feedback, I'm most surprised that he doesn't have an ECU or the equipment to read it showing the complete state of the car with how everything is being run. Most likely would have showed the throttle and misfire issues straight away.
Spot on - the software was available - unfortunately I was away on holiday during this event otherwise, yes I would have been there :) The test day prior didn't highlight any tuning issues per se so a decision was made between us to run it without my support, though you're right, this isn't the norm!
@@themtechzone Cheers for clarifying- unfortunately these things happen with schedule clashes at this time of year! ;) Hope the prep goes okay for Oulton, all the best!
This was well worth getting heavily sunburnt for. Amazing to see Minty in person!
The bit from 16:00 to 16:30 looks a lot like a netflix series or documentary because of how good the quality of the camera is, and the way the camera was capturing you two discussing and then the cinematic camera behind you while looking at the car. Amazing content
It was great seeing you at this event Jimmy and thank you for taking the time to talk to me before I went out on my marshal station.
Time attack is such an underrated motorsport. The builds out there are amazing!
12:40 Superb camera exposure here! Keep doing this in the future, too. I see that you even moved the camera downwards to avoid rear mirror blokcing the track directly in front of the car (as could be seen around 3:50).
make this top comment so the rest of these car youtubers understand xdddd
Superb technical feedback. So easy to blow out the highlights or shadows in the weather conditions!
Yeah these were perfect.
Don't get too bummed Jimmy ! I've been a crew chief for profesionnal touring car teams for 6 years now, and even with spec-cars like TCRs, there's a lot of issues, debugging, testing, failed fixes and frustrations along the way ! But in the end it always seems to work out and in the end, it's part of racing too !
wishing success to you and the team !
A bad day at the track is better than a good day at work. My story and I'm stickin' to it. Onward!
Big Love Jimmer, we all want to see the whole journey, the ups and downs. We’re with you every step of the way.
never knew about the marshalls hotlap, what a great idea!
That electric powersteering rack by I believe K power would suit the car nicely. You can adjust how stiff or soft you want the steering with a dial. Also maybe try a hood dump, or fender exit exhaust.
It won't pass noise regulations at any of the tracks in Europe. Notice how quiet all the cars are.
@@EarrGasmm m4 gt3 has entered the chat*
In UK motorsport hood and fender exits are only allowed in drag racing (unless the car has an FIA homologation). All exhausts have to exit behind the mid point of the wheelbase. Also post 1999 cars have to run catalytic converters (drag racing also exempt)
Started following you for your sim stuff, but your vids with the race cars keep me coming back. Keep it up Jima.
was a pleasure to meet you that Sunday. minty looks so beautiful on track
There are much fewer testpilots than regular pilots. This is pretty unique and interesting content. The car looks very fast and I am sure it will be eventually. You are getting to experience something many of your viewers would like to, and let's be honest - having a car that is that track focused is not cheap but then having to pay the techs you need as a support makes this a very exclusive sport. I for one am very interested in what it takes to get this mazda up to speed and then maintaining it throughout a weekend. Godspeed!

The mannerisms & intonation of your voice here Jimmy gives "It was just an inchident" vibes
Great video Jimmy! I like the fact that you post the hard parts of motorsports as well. I get the feeling that other creators with perfectly edited videos, where nothing bad happens, sets false expectation. This video shows the reality of Motorsports, testing, testing, testing, then some more testing.
Thank you for sharing!
thanks for sharing the real race experience with virtual plebs like us!
A phenomenal position to be in, issues on one of a few race cars you own, a new build at that. Loving all the real life racing and better luck next round! 🏁
Big up Gav and the lads
Also Annie being cute af getting the medics to check you over. It was a tough week but that company makes it better
Was still lots of fun to watch, can't wait for minty's comeback arc
Great video Jimmy. Im sure you and M-Tech will get the car running great in no time.
Wow, this car has evolved quite a bit since the last time I've seen it !
600BHP and no wing on a Miata, exciting I must say!
Thank you for adding subtitles during loud bits.
Loving the multicam during the driving sections.
Likewise, appreciated the content warning at 14:49. For anyone wanting to skip passed the fire, go to 16:48. I'm glad you're not hurt. You mentioned being worried about driving in the wet after you spun the Praga, so i hope the fire hasn't put you off being in Minty. Shame about the other mechanical issues, but that's racecar life. Fix one thing, 3 more things have issues.
Car seems like it'll be a hell of a workout even with power steering. The OIS on the go pros were really feeling it in the turns, so i imagine your neck was too lol.
Definitely how it goes with a brand new race car, but weekends like this are what make the fairy tale weekends even more special.
I'm still jealous as hell mate - great fun to watch, and it's all just part of the much bigger story you're writing. Onward and upwards Jimmer!!
Fuckin' A Jimmer, I've been with your channel for some time now and I'm happy as hell to see you RACING IRL IN PRO!!!! I only ever got to the middle of the pack on intermediate track days on a Literbike, and I LOVE seeing your come-up across the whole time since I watched you in the shed in the early tractor days. I had a similar fall from grace in late 2021, and not only have I loved watching you to see your come-up, but in the time where I had been hopeless, your channel has always been a light for me. Keep it up, keep humble, and keep pushing forwards. ❤❤❤
I was wondering where the big eff off huge wang was.
Big props to Gav and team for always trying to keep you on track. And big shout out to you jimmy for keeping your head up too.
Yall learned some things, now Minty will be better faster cooler and safer next round. All positives.
I love this car. I can't wait to see how it does once the issues are all sorted out. It takes a lot of courage to get back into a car that caught fire on you the day before.
There's something the sims will never touch. I know it was a frustrating putting but it was cool to see a car being ran through its paces. And that it's always a learning experience when trying out new cars.
I still think the outing was a decent shake down, alot of other things could of gone wrong and your weekend could have been a lot worse.
But regardless, I have faith you guys will get there, everyone's experienced things going wrong in shake down, that's what its for.
The car looks proper! And you look the best you ever did aswell! Keep it up dude!
That thing is a death trap. Jimmy's face when the guy said he would be racing the next day was priceless.
@11:55 it's me on Minty!! So rad to see my name on there
I feel like the big thing I'm learning is that this is, you know, super hard. I know you take this super serious, Jimmy, and you and your team know a hell of a lot. I think we all watch F1 and think all these problems are simple because, you know, if you have a factor with 1000 people in it maybe it ends up being easy... But it's not. Keep up the good work!
Also, bought a shirt, looking forward to wearing it, it is, after all, literally fire. 😂
Cheers for sharing Jimmy, better luck next time out. Cheers to the team.
Was so happy to see the car in person 👌🏻 thanks for the company jimmy
Glad you made it out safe, Jimmer. NGL, the exhaust piping through the firewall into the cabin seems super sketchy to me. I don't know what packaging issues you're dealing with, but it's probably not worth bringing that type of fire risk into your cockpit. You may want to inspect any wiring routed near your hot-box too. I wouldn't be shocked if stuff outside that box is getting cooked as well.
Best of luck w/ developing Minty. I'm sure you all will get her sorted!
This video earnt my like at 11:47
20:03 who ever decided to turn the bit of dirt on the camera lens into the word "bum" is a genius. 😂
I like the marshall hotlap idea! they deserve some enjoyment while being there (most often if not always as a volunteer)
Gaht damn Broadbent, seeing your pride and joy nearly become the Xtra Crispy Mint was spooky stuff. Glad everything and everyone is ok.
Reminds me of the times my grans focus turbo got oil through it and caught fire and my poor golfs turbo detonated. Scary shit lad.
Cant wait to see Minty at attack tsukuba one day!
I removed power steering from my track car for more feel and immediately felt the gravel after realising i couldnt correct quickly enough anymore.
Electric power steering going back in
Glad you're ok. Lovely bit of heal and toe, so satisfying to watch
Hey think of it this way: Addressing the problems now means they won't be an issue down the line, and now you know what each issue feels like to make future diagnosis easier, experience is always a boon!
Big shout out for your commitment. Driving in temperatures like that must have been horrible.
Car sounds great, it will come together 👍🏻 Hopefully re routing exhaust\manifold won’t be to big a job.
Glad youre okay Jimmer, the fires a setback but you've got a great team behind you. You'll get it sorted!
Well done Jimmy. So very well done. I remember when minty wasn’t even a dream. Congrats.
This is one of those videos I'm so excited for that I watch half of it in the defult player, not fullscreen, just because I'm so engrossed and didn't realise lol
The editing is really cool, great job !
Jimmy's optimism is rather motiving :)
Next time will be better! Also was good to see the Supra as well.
Shot Jimmer you're real racer now and have been for a while❤love this ⛳
Racing man! I feel ya! Days of money and pain and days of money and outrageous joy. But like you said once you get home the joy still lives even after a shit day. Us racing drivers are a weird breed 😅
I'm glad I got to see you on the Saturday. I agree it was a very very hot day LOL
@JimmyBroadbent Hi Jimmer! If you're having trouble with no power steering, use a wider wheel. It'll give you better leverage and you'll have an easier time of things. Also, you might want to add a dummy pedal to the left to give your left foot a place to sit when you're not using it to use the clutch. All the best!
I was in Scotland a while back and those Tango drinks are SO SWEET!
Hey, that's the main difference between racing games and real life racing. It's part of the deal and it's what makes the whole team proud when everything goes well.
Gav's a great straight man to Jimmer's fool, persona. XD. He was excellent for you in the Praga, love seeing him here in the Time Attack >D!!
I love how dramatic Jimmy is! keep it up!
20:03 Nice touch
Awesome video, great effort from all of you guys, you will sort it out eventually! Good luck for the next one.
That was awesome of you Jimmy to use the Supra to give Marshall laps
Way to send it right through the issues. Good work this weekend, Team 87!
Tough weekend but love watching the progress! I can't way to see the progress!
Wow Jimmy Im amazed on the production on these videos honestly it's top notch loving all the content on your channel may not get time to watch all your videos but I always come to your channel when I can to support what your doing it's awsome....ps you should become a top gear presenter! .....just throwing that one out there if anyone agrees? Lol
Its part of the journey of resilience so savour the memories of tribulation which only sweeten the moments of success
Seeing you guys work hard to get this car going is honestly very exciting. Loved the video.
Gott hae the downs to enjoy the ups, but as you say; you are there doing it. Those laps when it was all good, the car sounded unreal in the exterior clips! We also got to see the Supra again too. I look forwards to the next video of irl stuff as much as any if not more, car is gonna be a monster once you get these things sorted!
RGV Ariel photography subscribers will find Jimmy's new outro music super nostalgic. Ohhh the good old days :)
Brands Hatch is such a bad ass track. Bumpy and unforgiving. I love oldschool British Tracks!!!!
Heat management is always hard to sort out with a new car.
I’d look at getting some air flow into that ‘hot box’ or get the exhaust out of the cabin all together.
When you realize you need bigger brakes look up BroFab 👍🏻
Yeah we absolutely do have multiple 1000+ K24’s over here and K20’s well above 600. And that’s just near me in North Carolina
gotta love a project car, just gotta keep tryin shit, love all the work y'all are putting in
That SR sound is the inspiration I needed to hear today. 🎶
This is why I don't let anyone else work on my cars. I just want to know every little thing about my own vehicles and I will make sure things are right. And worst case if something bad happens, I only have myself to blame
I think your mechanics are very brave, well done chaps..
Was there on the Sunday, it was hot enough even in the shade so sharing the cockpit of an MX-5 with an oven, while wearing a full race suit... Oof. Was sad to not get to see Minty flat out but that's racing I guess, better luck next time.
The rear looks very unfinished. Rear diffuser on the cards? The car looks amazing and really fast. Good job dude.
I think the floor is a planned later addition. They're gonna slowly add on aero after they get the mechanical grip aspects of the car to work.
To be fair a lot of time attack cars do run completely without rear bumpers leaving a massive gap because they generally aren't good for aero, but there's definitely space for a massive diffuser. Considering the size of the rear wing Jimmy will be using, I wouldn't be surprised to see one at some point
Jimmy has said this is just a shake down without ALOT of the aero on the car as some isn't finished but they still wanted to test the rest of the car for obvious reasons...
The wing and diffuser will prob come later, will probably never get a fastback though which would decrease drag and improve effectiveness of the rear wing. Easy upgrade with big benefits yet so few in the miata community use em....
venturi tunnels running along the length of the floor and into the diffuser coming when?
Things I noticed watching your adventure as a Time Attack driver in the US. 1: Americans in Time Attack all are lying about the K24. They just keep throwing new engines in lol. They are solid for a stock engine for sure but it's not bulletproof. 2: I think it's crazy you guys run with side windows up. They don't allow that here. 3: GET POWER STEERING!! Totally worth the weight. If you need an electric pump that's easy to get grab it out of a Volvo S60. 4: You are on your way. Excited to see when you guys add aero to the car. Keep killin it Jimmers, you will get there! The fact you found all these problems on the first shakedown is a good thing. It was all going to happen sooner or later, at least this way you can fix a bunch of stuff in one shot!
Wow, never knew the supra interior was so similar to the mr2
Love these kinds of videos, keep it up!
At this point, Minty is a full-blown prototype race car, and how often do we see F1 cars conked out on the side of the race track and then in the garage for a whole day in pieces during those first testing sessions… heck, when the V6 Turbos first arrived, almost every F1 car broke down repeatedly, and these are huge teams that spend tens of millions a season!
I can imagine it’s disheartening for the racing driver in Jimmy to be sat around not being able to drive, but first run in anger was never going to be flawless.
The Marshal Laps is a very cool thing to do, lovely gesture to the unsung hero’s of the Orange Army.
Man i feel you. So sorry. Let me tell you, if the carcatches fire, make it safer and start trusting it again. My cart did that once and i missed the oppotunity to get into f4 because i was to scared to drive. now im too talll.
Time attack is usually my favorite kind of race in video games. Your car is turning out nice so far. I always wanted to make my own track car. I was thinking of a sleeper made of an ugly 90's family car and a ridiculous engine swapped in if the engine isn't worth trying to improve.
Massive Wang @12:13 - you need one of those and a diffusor for the ultimate MeMeX5
so glad i saw minty for its first race
2:28 “AAAHH”
Minty looks like absolute rocket Holy crap 😳 shame about the fire though
8:37 That NSX is completely mental
