The MG5 has proved to be a huge hit in the UK for MG Motor. It's been the only pure-electric estate car on sale and factor in cheap prices and a long range, and it's easy to see why it's been a success.
But does that translate to the used market? If you're after a good second-hand EV, should the MG5 be on your shortlist? Nicki Shields finds out.

MG bought by cheap fools. By buying a Chinese car, unlike any other purchase, you are directly supporting a Chinese Communist Party owned company and undermining western companies (including from democratic countries like japan and Korea). China are a communist/totalitarian regime, they want slowly dismember western economies. All car companies in China are directly or indirectly owned by the CCP. You are supporting CCP design, technology, and engineering. China are a self proclaimed enemy of western democracy and free people, fact. Buying Chinese cars will change the power dynamic and erode western freedoms. China cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is a threat to their regime. They need to extinguish freedom in as many places as possible. All empires/civilisations spread their model.
By increasing the power of Chinese companies like MG, we are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched think again. If you think this process will be benign, you are wrong. China will slowly tighten their grip on democracy, it is already starting to happen, they already demand other nations to limit their freedom of speech. On the current course, in the not too distant future, your government will be indirectly controlled by China, your government will impose decisions handed down by China. You will not be able to protest or question these decisions. You, your children, and grandchildren will grow up without any freedom for the rest of your/their lives.
As one example China forcibly sterilised and aborted their own women in the 80's, dragged them in to horrific surgeries, now the Uyghurs are being subjected to the same treatment.

I had a Leaf for five years and was worried that my next EV after that would have to be an SUV since that seemed to be all that any manufacturer wanted to make, but the MG5EV came along and it was exactly what I wanted - boring, simple and effective. It's not going to set your pulse racing, but it is going to get you where you want to be with a whole bunch of stuff every time. Mine might be up for sale soon, though, because the new 2022 version looks even better.

Okay, I’m confused, you’re complaining that the charging port is at the front of the MG5 and yet you praise the fact that the Kia e Niro and the Hyundai Kona both charge at the front so don’t have to reverse into a charging bay. Which is it?!!

Why am I not surprised at the somewhat negative remarks at times? As far as I can see at least some of them are not warranted. For instance, you say that the charging port in the nose is a bit inconvenient. Why is it inconvenient? Personally I find it very convenient. Drive up to the charger head on, plug in and charge. What is inconvenient about that? As with many of these reviews, it seems to me that the presenter simply wants to find fault for little reason. However, you do admit that they are popular amongst some people and it has a good ride, amongst many other positives. Overall I like your review, but please don't find fault for the sake of it. I certainly like mine.

    @q3b26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've got one of these on subscription, I only went for the MG5 because it was the cheapest EV to lease, not at all because I wanted one. I think they're so plain, a bit boring and not something I would choose out of choice after coming from a Mercedes E400 and Volvo XC40, but I'm VERY surprised.
Mine's a 50kWh in Excite trim so it's not exactly plush, but I'm very surprised at just how well built the interior is. No rattles, no creaks from the dash, centre console or even the doors when you pull them closed (something you get in Mini, BMW, Ford, VW)...
The stereo is also quite capable so long as you have the virtual subwoofer (which just makes the speakers sound blown) and surround sound off - it has a full band EQ so you can actually tinker around with it to get it how you like and better than the standard offerings from Ford, Mercedes, BMW or VW but not as good as Vauxhall's standard system.
My main gripes have to do with the lack of lumbar support, no safety kit, no auto wipers, poor headlight output and it doesn't have heated wing mirrors.
If I were to buy one myself, I'd be sure to get the long range Exclusive just for the extra kit alone.
    I'm a very heavy footed driver and I've been averaging 3.8 m/kW.
I will say though, there's no sat nav - ordinarily this wouldn't bother me, but with this car it means it has no way to direct you to any nearby charge points when you're battery is low.

    • @robertsmart7484
      @robertsmart7484 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you wanted a sat nav, why did you get the Excite model and then complain that it doesn't have a sat nav, rather than the Exclusive model, which does.

Yes Nikki, up here in the N.East of Scotland it seems to me cars production is lagging behind them that want to convert, especially as ICE fuel is going through the roof.
I've checked my local sources and no one can supply me with a 2nd hand EV but all promote brand new vehicles at costs that outweigh by bank balance, so what is left is checking agengies down south and paying for the vehicles to be shipped north, even through main dealerships, that can be a hefty bill to add to the final cost.
Think I'll hang on to what I know, until 2024 when the new Renault 5 ev hits British dealerships - as I want one.

This nonsense about the SR model only supporting 50kW keeps getting repeated - just like the Long Range, the original Standard Range model supports 80kW DC charging. Other than the battery capacity, MG Pilot suite, dual level boot floor & 75kg load rating vs 35kg (Exclusive only) - they're pretty identical. Including performance.

That aside, the MG5 is absolutely what the UK EV-buying public 'need' right now - it has an amazing range for the money, it's family-sized practical (so, hopefully, people can stop buying aerodynamically-inefficient and therefore utterly wasteful SUV monstrosities...!) plus a 7 year warranty. 👍

I swear that all you reviewers have been paid to bad mouth the MG5, there's nothing wrong with its body styling, I've had people say "Like your Passat," it is what it is, a good reasonably priced EV estate with more room than its SUV brother the ZS EV (and cheaper) good acceleration even in eco mode & even better, after a long journey no sore back or legs. To return to its body shape, it doesn't stand out like say a Tesla, (have you seen what Tesla owners have to put up with on the other side of the pond.)

      Positives
-"One of the best rides of any car on sale"
      - Really nice boot
      - Generous equipment
      - Attractive price tag
      - Equipment levels usually only found on cars that are much more expensive
      - interior quality is good a "Stirling effort"
      - nice touchscreen
      - really liked rotary driver selector
      - haven't found any annoying niggles
      - seems to be pretty reliable based on feedback
      - Cheap to run and maintain
      - Great Warranty
      - Great affordable service plan
      - Lease deals on new models are really good
"Proves that value for money doesn't have to be cheap"
Whilst the negatives were minor niggles about the rear seats, roof bars, styling that's "a bit bland", lack of smart app and a slightly awkward charge point - all things raised by owners in the owner groups I've visited.
I'm not sure how that could be interpreted as negative and certainly not as bad mouthing. Reading comprehension is important.
