Germany is underrated on food. Have travelled extensively in Germany for work and pleasure and have never had a bad meal or drink and always better value than here in the UK. I like your food safari concept 😀

If your reference point is very at the bottom British food (another example of bad quality food) you might say German food is good.

The frikadellen you tried in cologne were actually frikandel, sounds very similar but quite different and only really popular in the parts closer to the dutch border as it originates from there. They're made of chicken and personally I love them.

I share your love of currywurst! I had them multiple times in Munich and Frankfurt. Luckily, back here in Calgary, there's a little stand in the Farmer's Market that sells an amazingly-authentic currywurst, so I don't have to fly back to Germany every time I'm craving one :)

The dough of Flammkuchen is completly different than pizza, when it´s raw and put in shape you have to be carefull with it because the dough breaks appart very easily, unlike pizza dough. Pizza dough= moist and elastic, Falmmkuchen dough= dry and crumbly.

Scott, as a Dutchman with Scottish roots I can tell you the advertisement of the “Frikadel speciaal” you got is a popular Dutch street food. There are a number of variants, the sauces vary (mayonnaise vs frietsaus and ketchup vs currysaus) and how the onions are served (crispy fried, raw or not).
Döner Kebab is also a popular street food in the Netherlands.

When I was stationed in West Germany in the late 70’s early 80’s in the town where we were stationed in had a Greek food outlet and they did gyros. It was pork and it was lovely with chips and some German mustard yummy. They also sold hot frikadallens which was also delicious with the mustard

Next time grabbing some Flammkuchen take some Federweißer with it. You get that setup only at Fall-Season because Federweißer is what I would call pre-mature white whine and needs to severd fresh from the field. This combimation is very popular at this time of the Year.

Somewhere up there should also be "Spaghettieis" ice cream put through an extruder to look like spaghetti. Very popular in Italian ice cream stores, which, a bit like Doner kebab houses seem to be more common in Germany than in their home country. • @lazrseagull54
      @lazrseagull54 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The ones in the UK are very different and they taste nowhere near like what they have in Germany.
The German ones are served with homemade sauces including cacik (yogurt/mint) and a hot sauce, lettuce, tomato, carrots, red cabbage, and the meat is beef or chicken with bits of vegetable on the skewer with the meat. All of this is served inside the bread and the shops smell delicious as soon as you walk in. This style of Döner was invented by Turks in Berlin in the 70s.
The UK ones are lamb or chicken in a polystyrene container. The salad is lettuce with a slice of tomato and a slice of cucumber in a separate polystyrene container. The sauces are garlic mayo and a hot sauce that come in their own pots. If you're lucky, they might give you a slice of pitta but you have to take it somewhere and assemble it all yourself.
In the UK, Kebab doesn't have the reputation of smelling good as soon as you enter the shop. It's mostly considered afterpub food for people who are too drunk to taste what they're eating. In Germany, it's normal to have a döner for lunch.

    • @arnodobler1096

In Germany, Döner Kebab became street food. Through Turkish immigrants in Berlin. In Turkey, it is eaten more on the plate with side dishes. My favorite is Yufka, also called Dürüm, kebap rolled in thin patties (pide).

I gotta say, that Flammkuchen didn't even look that nice, but they always taste great. There's supoosed to be a nice, thick layer of peppered cream on the dough, which should at most contain minimal amounts of yeast (and thus not be as bubbly as the one you tried). And the onions ought to be fresh and thinly sliced. They're really easy to make at home, all you need is salt, pepper, flour, water, oil, onions, bacon and regular as well as sour cream. Do give it a try, they'll be gone faster than you can make them!

    Hi Scott,
I really enjoyed your video about your experiences in Germany. However, I noticed during your interaction with the currywurst seller that he seemed clearly unhappy about being filmed. As the business and his full face are visible (for example, at 6:52), he is potentially identifiable. According to German privacy laws, such as the 'Recht am eigenen Bild', individuals should give their consent when they are clearly identifiable. Perhaps you could revisit the editing of this segment to ensure it aligns with privacy expectations. Anyway, I really enjoy your content and this comment is intended to be positive and helpful.
    Best regards,
    Andrew

you had a FrikaNdel, not a Frikadel. Dutch vs German, and a German interpretation of a dutch dish. If you every want to do a dutch streetfood safari I gladly help you find the best. Even if I have to pay for it.

@@arnodobler1096 It's very different there, British people won't know unless they are told.
I'm certain one of these "don't do this in Germany" videos would warn visitors.

I would like to have the confidence to try food from the smaller street venues but as you mentioned with the wasps it can be difficult to be certain of cleanliness and so on. Tht's why we have the hygiene ratings in England at least but even then.

Fair comment, but this summer you would have found wasps on all foods sold without plastic packaging, which is a whole other environmental story of course....

The wasps thing has nothing to do with hygiene, unlike flies, wasps are into sugar.

I think that the Germans are more sensitive to being video taped, since they now have strong privacy laws that they adopted since after the fall of the third Reich. This vendor, however, should realize that he is catering to people from around the world and if he is constantly fussing and paranoid about having a camera around him, then maybe he should be in another line of job that does not see him dealing directly with the general public. He is just being a jerk. The Dutch are far more tolerant, open and not as paranoid in this respect, I feel.

Well, the last Mafia boss that went hidden in Germany ("Italian Mafia's Backyard") was a pizza backer. Guess if he would have been happy to get filmed!

Ummm no. We have it everywhere here in Australia and it didn’t come from Germany. We have lots of Greek and Turkish populations and their cafes. It’s common enough I had it for lunch Wednesday. I think you’ll find your trying to claim something that isn’t German.

Bavaria isn’t Germany. It was invented by Walt Disney to let you believe we’re drunken weirdos.
