  • What was a 25 minute connection at Koblenz on the way to Mainz, ended up being a missed train to Mainz. Making the best of a bad situation, I decided to explore Koblenz, on the River Rhine, and what a surprise. It was absolutely beautiful.

Koblenz is an old town, founded by the Romans after the they went from Gallia over9 Augusta Treverorum (Trier) down the river Mosel to the Rhine to conquer the Germanics, who lived opposite of the Rhine. In the Roman times Koblenz was called Confluentes, which is Latin and means flow together. Koblenz is the place, where Rhine and Mosel flow together. This point is called Deutsches Eck and is situated in the beautiful Old Town you already mentioned. In the Video you showed some views of the old town hall. Opposite of that there is my school, Görresgymnasium, which I left with A level in 1983. If you go further upstairs from Fort Konstantin you'll pass on the right the jail of Koblenz and after 2 more kilometres the quarter Karthause, that is divided up in east and west. The eastern part is the older one, where I was living with my family, and the western part the newer one which was built in the 1960s.

I think there was a mixup at 9:10, as you can see Ehrenbreitstein is the fortress on the other side of the Rhine. You visited Fort Konstantin. It had been the site of a monastery for centuries before Prussians built the fort 1822-27.

The seilbahn was installed for a Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) which we went to around 2011 or 2012 via the seilbahn. Why don't you take a trip up the river on the Goethe, a paddle steamer that goes all the way up the Rhine Gorge to Rudesheim ? You can cross to Bingen on the ferry and take a train to Mainz, or back to Koblenz.

Ah, Hohenzollernbrücke in Cologne... the joy of creeping across that creaky old bridge behind schedule at 5 mph and then watching your missed connecting train coming the other way....
The good thing along the main railway line along the Rhine is that very often, all trains have similar delays because they get stuck through the same bottlenecks - chances are your connection to Mainz might have worked despite your first train's delay.
I did some 9 € ticket travel this summer as well and survived it by taking trains outside weekends and peak commuter times - but then, I did some excursions I wouldn't otherwise have found worth the steep regular fares.
    Thanks for the vid!

Forget about just trains, go on the hop on KD (Köln-Düsseldorf) boats. Times from Mainz are more restricted but a short train ride downstream from Mainz to Bingen met the next boat for a magnificent leisurely sail all the way down to Koblenz with stops enroute if desired, I did it over 2 days. From Koblenz you can swop train and KD boat up and down the bendy Mosel river to very pretty Kochem. Trains and or boats can also take you up or down to Cologne. The Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz is in a beautiful deep meandering gorge with tons of castles and vineyards, there is a 2 language commentary on the boat with all the food and drink you want on sale as you take in the scenery at just the right pace, nice.

5:40 That is the mascot of Koblenz, the "Schängel". The name comes the french name Jean, which indicates that Schängel is a war child from the time of french occupation of Koblenz from 1794-1814. Nowadays it is a common nickname for boys / men that live in or come from Koblenz. The Schängel is known to be a little bit of a prankster, and there is a water fountain with a small statue of him spitting water on tourists from time to time. The fountain is on the place where you were at 4:40

Having stayed in Koblenz at least 15 times over the last 25 years, it is a city that always amazes me be it the sights, the people , or the food! A great place to base yourself for trips to Mainz, Wiesbaden or Limburg. The rail trip on the Lahntalbahn, offers fantastic views with a beautiful Altstadt in Limburg. Mainz is a nice city but is a little too modern for my taste. A great rail trip is to go to Mainz down the right bank of the Mittelrhien via Skt. Goarshausen and Wiesbaden, then return up the right bank via Bingen, Skt. Goar, and Boppard. You then get to travel under the Lorelei on the outward trip and see it proper on the return!
Have you considered a video on the Bodensee (Lindau, Friedrichshafen, and Bregenz)?

That’s the same trip my wife and I did roughly 3-4 years ago, I did it so my wife could see the Rhine gorge and our train from Düsseldorf was 30 mins late because of vandalism on the line, leaving Mainz we were told that it was running 40 mins late and platform 9 so we waited for an hour and then I went and enquired was it still running late, you’ve missed it I was told the platform was split in two and it pulled into the top part of the platform and we were at the other end, when I explained this and said that I came from Ireland well then everything changed the station master took charge and made a few changes for us we’d still to change a couple of times and our train stopped at a village station and we’d all to get off onto a very rural train and then we were met by a lovely female member of staff who rushed us through to get our ice train connection they had phoned ahead and had us met, we were not supposed to be on the ice train as we’d got the regional express tickets and to cap it all we arrived back in Düsseldorf 30 minutes before our original arrival time and that was even missing an hours delay at Mainz, don’t be afraid to go and ask for assistance and try to speak a little German they always will remember their school English and between the two of you you’ll get there,Germany is well worth the visit lots of beautiful scenery to view

Next time you're there Scot, try the Dusseldorf to Monchengladbach train. From M.... you can get a direct train to Koblenz avoiding changing at Cologne. It also takes a different route via Cologne Airport. More importantly during the €9 summer these trains were uncrowded, unlike the direct Dusseldorf to Koblenz route.

Looks like a nice place. I passed through it about 4 years ago: my flight from Warsaw to Luxembourg diverted to Dusseldorf because LUX was closed due to snow. We were given the option of returning to Warsaw and trying to re-book for a later flight or make our own way - I did that. Bought a train ticket at the airport station, tran to Koblenz then changed to a service direct to Luxembourg - lovely ride along (I think) the Mosel river valley, through beautiful little villages and vineyards, and arrived in LUX about 4 in the afternoon (by which time the snow had all gone). An unexpected pleasure and better than a day in the office doing not very much!

The Koblenz Löhrcenter (Stadtmitte) station is actually only a couple hundret meters away from the main station and Koblenz is actually a pretty small city. What you've seen isn't Ehrenbreitstein, it's Fort Konstantin, another of the I think 5 or 6 forts in and around Koblenz. The river you've seen isn't the Rhine but the Moselle which flows into the Rhine at the famous german corner a couple hundret meters further down the river from where you stood. There is also a huge statue watching the mouth, flags of all the german states and you can also see Ehrenbreitstein from there. It's a major intersection for smaller cargo and cruise ships going towards and coming from France and there is a floodgate a few hundret meters further up the Moselle river so they often need to wait for a slot and moor next to the historic city.

When you get the cable car 🚠 one (or maybe more?) of the cars has a glass bottom. Worth waiting to get on that one. The fortress is interesting but most if not all the information panels are in German. It was mostly built by the Prussians after they got control of this part of Germany 🇩🇪 after the Napoleonic wars.

German Railways are getting a bad reputation over train delays. We recently travelled up the Rhine from Cologne to Basel on our way to southern Switzerland. We were 5 hours late to our destination (Bellinzona). It was due to a casualty on the lie south of Offenberg, but what struck me most was the total lack of information and confusing messages.

Well, historically todays "Stadtmitte" is roughly around the place where the imperial time station has been. And you did choose a modern time "side alley" when you went to explore (you could as well have just walked one street right of you, same direction, (Schlossstraße) and you'd have ended up with the enrtée to the Prince-elector-castle.
The today's main station is situated where originally had only been a more or less military station to supply the garrison of Fort Konstanin.

DB currently has a to of delays because of construction work. The German government neglected the infrastructure so bad, that DB now has to rebuild miles and miles of tracks, switches, signals and everything else, so delays will be more frequent then. The biggest part of the renewal which will cost several tens of billions of euros is planned to start in 2024, and then the delays will be very very frequent. But when everything is finished, the trains will run on time and the overall quality is improved hopefully...
