  • While the reasons listed for the movie failing may have been incorrect, it is encouraging to see that the D&D TV Show is movie forward. Also I really hope that the D&D movie gets a sequel, I think it was a fantastic film.

    What I've always heard, is that a movie "budget" doesn't include marketing, so in a lot of cases they lose money even if the box office gross exceeds the budget. There's also an opportunity cost they consider, if a movie doesn't make enough money, it's still a flop because they could have spent the budget on something that made more. But I agree the movie was good, and it was more a matter of when it came out that hurt it.

    • @mgardner18

      The other thing to consider is the box office sales are split with the theaters, so they only received around half of the $208 million.

    Suggesting that the cause of the boycott was changes to lore/rules is truly insulting to the D&D community. It makes us look like we flew off the handle for relatively trivial things, and shouldn't have been taken seriously.

      The coping around this movie is insane. The OGL may have been atrocious PR among the D&D players but it had nothing to do with general audiences. The movie just wasn’t appealing to general movie goers. Simple as that. Sure you may have liked it that’s fine, but being akin to your tastes and being a great movie are two different things.
      The problem is sometimes the online community vastly overestimates how much the more casual players are aware of. Many D&D players haven’t even heard of the OGL scandal and even the sales show the limitations of the player community as a market, yet you are suggesting it’s massive enough to have significant impact in both domestic and worldwide box office numbers. You liked it and it wasn’t an appealing movie to general audiences. Both things can be true

    • @Idziemel1
      @Idziemel1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean, let’s be real with ourselves, the whole OGL debacle is completely uninteresting to an average person and I wouldn’t blame anyone who doesn’t play D&D for not knowing about it. Why would they ever care?

      This misrepresentation of the reason for the boycott of the movie is obviously a reference to the Wild Shape into an Owlbear "scandal". I don't know if the author of this article is intentionally misrepresenting the reasons or if they were just lazy and casually heard about the Owlbear debate and assumed that was the reason. Either way, it comes down to either incompetence or malice.

    As a rule the production cost of a movie is roughly half of the actual cost. Advertising and the like isn't factored into that. So the dnd movies production cost of 151 means it likely cost the studio more like 300 million. With it only making 208 m worldwide box office it's hard to think they broke even on it yet.

    One thing to remember about mainstream films is that their marketing budget is usually as much as the cost of the film itself. So you can look at it costing 300 million. So it didn't really earn its money back, but thats neither here nor there if a sequel is on the table.
    Personally I'm not completely trusting WotC/Hasbro after they completely canned the Dragonlance series that Joe Manganiello's been working on for like a decade at this point. Still hopeful to get more stories.

    • @bloodyirishman9155
      @bloodyirishman9155 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And that's also not factoring in that the theatre's take about half of the profits so a $208m total is a complete disaster.

  • @GrokNZ
    @GrokNZ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    movie budgets work like this.
    Production cost+marketing and theatres take half of the box office. So if the DnD movie had a $150 million dollar production cost to make, plus $150 million for marketing, that's $300 million. Then you factor in the theatre cut of half the box office so it needed 600 million to break even.
    In the past you could make up the difference with physical blu ray/DVD sales, but yes like you said the move to streaming means less income from physical releases.
    I think what screenrant is trying to say without actually saying it is the lore changes about how orcs and drow arent evil anymore or whatever that change was.

I agree with you about the timing of the situation with the OGL being a detrimental factor to the film’s performance at the box office. • @TearDownGenesis
    @TearDownGenesis 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Generally Double the budget is what it takes to "break even" Then you'd need more on top of that to make it worthwhile to make more of the franchise.
    Although certain ones, like DnD, Star Wars, etc. can perform under that but still be positive because of how it brings in revenue for merchandising and such.

  • @findiwindles
    @findiwindles 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Agreed the OGL debacle negatively impacted Honor Among Thieves. When the trailer first came out the response was very positive, but after OGL the response was exceedingly negative, before the film had even been released. Talk about guilt by association. I've watched the film a number of times and really enjoy it
    In any case, I struggle to understand why WOTC would pursue a generic-sounding D&D series, but cancel a Dragonlance production helmed by Joe Mangianello. It seems there is some form of derangement spreading anong entertainment industry moguls and they becoming increasingly oblivious to their primary audiences.

    The advertising was pretty anemic for the film. I wonder if the decision was made to reduce the cost of advertising and promotion by releasing when it did, with less advertising. Too bad. It could have done much better at a different time of the year, with a bit more advertising. Edit: definitely would have been better in the summer, though I admit, Barbenhiemer could have been an issue.

    I for one do hope for a 2nd movie as I did like it alot.
    For a live action tv I think the best best would be take each season as 1 level ie milestone xp. The lower levels I think would be easyer on effect budgets then higher levels would be. By doing 1 level a season it would be 5 season before something like fireball is even common (maby get a scroll in season 3 for a big show down). Even the monster at low levers are normaly lower on the effects.

    I have played d&d since I was 7. Took a break in my 20s and came back big for 5e. I love all the lore and surround fluff, but the trailers for the movie just never sat well with me. I always got the feeling they were laughing at the whole thing, not with it. And the cast just didn’t excite me.
    Add all that up on top of the post pandemic world we live in and I just wasn’t going to go to the theater for it. I thought I might catch it on stream. Then they released it for streaming on a service I don’t have and won’t be getting…maybe I’m alone in this, but that is why I haven’t seen it.

Between that mistake and the overlooking of the ogl factor in the boycott I question the writer of the article very much. I think the "lore" bit was the druid wild shape into the owl bear. Now, I do wonder if WotC rereleased the movie into theaters now if it would do better.
    A low budget fantasy movie series I did enjoy was called Mythica. I honestly thought I was watching a DnD connected movie with how they portrayed the characters. The special effects weren't too bad considering low budget and story was fairly good. Sometimes cutting back on the special effects can be the better option as long as story\characters are good.

    North American box office last year was down about 50% so the movie took in much less than it might have (potentially). And the OGL of course killed off a lot of the fan base.. but the OGL scandal is a whole article by itself. I'm looking forward to more shows and stuff though. This movie was no where close to making money. It would have made at least 450 million, just to even be close. There is no way this movie should have cost 150 million to begin with. Godzilla Minus One cost something like 18 million. There is a reason that massive Hollywood movies are losing a ton of money.
    You have to remember that all that money does not go directly to the studio. The cinemas get around 40%. Cinemas overseas take a higher cut, so all the overseas numbers are cut even more. Then there is the marketing budget. Which generally almost the same as the budget of the film.
    They don't have the backend media sales like they used to, that made up a portion of the budgets. Streaming has killed that revenue stream.
    I would not hold my breath for a second movie. This one cost them around 200 million.

    This was the best adaptation of DnD to film. I think a huge part that made it so good was the John Francis Daley and (forgot other name sorry) both play DnD and are huge fans of it. The fun easter eggs of humour that worked because of their actual experience from playing. The previous movies were just maxed out campy story and villons that qould wear purple lipstick for no reason. Just very generic fantasy story with DnD in the title. I hope they dont just blow it off because it didnt pull in End Game numbers. If the writing stays good i think those number will only get better. I hope lol

    I thoroughly enjoyed Honor Among Thieves! I didn't care that the classes "broke rules" or anything. It was fun, and I truly felt the spirit of the game reflected in the adventure. And we're here for a movie, not a live action play. I can watch actual plays all over YT if I want that; I watched the film to see a wacky adventure with crazy "player choices" working out and to be entertained.

  • @HughRGlen
    @HughRGlen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    When they say "changes to lore and rules" that is probably their way of dancing around all of the istaphobe nonsense that's been going on for last couple years: orcs and drow are racist, getting rid of racial stats (but keeping racial feats), furries, and all the other culture war stuff they've been pushing absolutely did turn off a noticeable portion of the core fanbase. That and the 50th/5.5/revised/One/newbutnotnew stuff are both salient points.. in addition to the OGL fiasco.
    Now, people may argue that is either a tiny group of the fanbase or that it didn't/shouldn't matter but that is more likely people not wanting to believe it and downplaying it. Just because you don't agree with people's opinions doesn't change those opinions. TLDR: WoTC has made a lot of unpopular moves and they are all factors.

    The movie was good and was liked by virtually everyone who saw it, but a film has to make back 2-3x its budget to be profitable due to things like ticket-sale sharing with theaters and the cost of marketing, and they wanted this to lead a whole franchise. I really want more, so hopefully they can justify it with the budgets!

  • @AJRAR1979
    @AJRAR1979 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The movie to be in the green needs do make 2x what it costs (I work in the industry, the studios don't see profit before that mark). In this case it needed to make 300 millions, so it was way off that target. the movie is not great, I spend the time thinking this would be cool to happen and withing a few minutes it happens on screen, I would rather be suprised than expecting this or that to happen, it's a cool movie but not a great one Hasbro/WOTC had the money and the time to make it much better that it really was..
    The movie failed financially due to the OGL shitshow that made many see the movie with a pirate torrent file instead of going to the theater, it's a simple as that. Hasbro/WOTC knew very well what could have happen with the OGL but thought the fans woul'd care enough to support the independent creators, this meant they decided to throw away a golden oportunity to make lots of money and not pissing of the fans.
    BTW the shitshow that the OGL was, made me quit playing/running the game for almost one year, and nothing they can or will publish will make me use anything after 31st December 2022. for me the game rules and everything on it is only with pre-OGL existing material and homebrew lore, Rules, mechanics, etc is and always will be pre-OGL Shitshow.
    ps. great work WOTC/HASBRO for killing the Dragonlance show... I was going to give it a chance, but just like a year ago they decided to take a dump on the fans.... really great work

      The movie cost 150 million to make. Figure it had a 100 million marketing budget. This brings the total cost to 250 million. Now the movie makes 208 million in worldwide box office sales. This boxofice has to be split 50 percent with distribution and theaters, not all nations split equally China for example takes 75 percent of box office receipts. So this means that the movie made the studio only 104 million on a 250 million budget. Net loss of 146 million so this movie is technically a flop.

    I think the "lore changes" part is referring to the subset of the community mad at WotC for "going woke" by doing stuff like making Orcs and Drow not uniformly evil, or trying to include more non-white voices in their books and lore. I was very underwhelmed by the D&D movie. I think it had nothing really unique in it and could have been any movie just set in a fantasy setting. I think they should have made a movie of one of any of the hundred of novels that are out there and in so doing stayed more true to the lore. The characters were kind of bland and it felt too much like a "modern" take on D&D to be able to please the casuals, but I think that came at the cost of losing old school gamers like myself. That being said I watched it and wouldn't mind a sequel but I definately think that they missed their chance when they didn't make a movie based on one of the beloved books that has millions of fans. 4 or maybe 5 out 10 for me.

      For one, the "rule change" was specifically called out before the movie released as their version of homebrew. It doesn't get much more "real D&D" than that. Not going for that reason is extremely silly. My group went to see it despite the OGL stuff because why punish the actors/writers/directors (and ourselves if the movie was good) for Hasbro being awful. The movie was great and I purchased a physical copy when it released.

    Yeah, I thought the movie was a lot of fun, and most of the D&D players I know loved it. But the timing was so bad. Super Mario Bros. really ate up a lot of its potential box office. I do think they can do more with these characters and even tie it to BG3 in some way. The key would be keep the budget leaner, with a tight script (shorter run time) and maybe focus on one or two the characters, so you don't have a huge payout for big name stars. I just don't know if that is the direction they want to go.
    As for Paramount. They are kinda infamous for screwing over their properties with bad budget decisions (just ask Star Trek about that). And they have not been doing well lately with rumors of Paramount + potentially being sold. So I think the fate of the TV show is very much up in the air still. A shame, but at least we have a great movie we can enjoy. And I think it will only get more appreciation as the years pass.

    The movie was really the only good WOTC thing last year. Their PR was so poor last year that many people didn't go and waited till it was streaming to see it. I think timing might have been part of it, but really it was a combination of factors.

  • @miura_vs

    Personally, I thought the trailers looked awful. The movie is delightful, and I hope they make another. Paramount is in a lot of financial trouble, so I doubt they take a risk on it, but I think a sequel in the hands of the same filmmakers would be a larger success than the first, as long as they take the Beastie Boys out of the trailers, and let the composer’s music shine.

    Hey Ted, in part it WAS because of the lore. You told screenrant to do research, well, stones in glass houses and all that, because if you did, you're remember there were a LOT of people saying they were boycotting anything Hasbo/WotC did because the changes in Ravenloft lore and monstrous humanoids no longer being evil. They were idiots, but it was in fact a pretty common reasons people said they were boycotting. The one thing they did screw up on you didn't even notice or call it out. Barbie's success didn't show people liked movies based on toys. Barbie succeeded because of the message and the point of the movie more than anything else. It represented the frustrations of half of our population. Not because it was based on a toy. The fact that screenrant missed the whole point and you didn't notice was a fear I've heard many women say when the movie came out.

      A DnD sequel isn't a tentpole and won't get tentpole budget.
      The original was made on a 150 mill budget. Studios spend about an equal amount on advertising. So the real budget was 300 mill. It's a flop.
      Additionally, it made 93 million domestic and 114 international. Typically studios have to share half or more to international distributors. So the studio likely only took home about 60 mill international, making it really a 150 mill box office or HALF of what was spent on it when budget and marketing are added in.
      Also, the idea of tentpoles is that they make enough money to 'hold up' a tent for less profitable films to be made. Even if it HAD made a full 70 mill in the black, that's not a tentpole. That doesn't allow other films to be made, heck it doesn't even make enough for another DnD film of the same budget to be made.
      If DnD had made 450-600 mill, it would be a hit. If it made 600-1bill it would be a tentpole.
      It failed. It failed BIG. It was the 4th largest film for Paramount that year. At least it didn't lose as much as Scorsese's Flower Moon (400 mill budget + marketing with only about 100 mill coming in), but thats an 'awards' film that they hope will make them money on the back end - which , if the Golden Globes and Baftas are any indication won't happen with 16 noms and only 1 won between them.
      So yes, it was a bad film for business and it wasn't a tentpole even though they hoped it would be like Transformers which has yet to fail at the box office after 7 films?

    "Boycotting because of rules/lore changes" would most likely refer back to the protests about a druid wildshaping into an owlbear in the trailer. For that matter, only the druid really "broke" the rules with her wildshaping (owlbear, rapid succession shaping, becoming a flying creature, etc.). But that's not (I'm pretty sure) why most people didn't go see it.

    Paramount+ is worth a sub even without DnD content. Lots of great shows. OGL isn't why the movie flopped in the box office, only people who are super immersed in the game community cared about that. The general public remembered the really shitty previous DnD movie and probably wanted a more serious take on the property than the corny Wayan's brother flop from 2000. The trailers made it look much more comedic and in the same spirit as the 2000 movie. It turned out to be far better.
