If you want to learn about earlier editions, there is no substitute for actually buying them, playing them and running them. Jason Tondro mentioned it during this video but didn’t point out the negative aspect of the 5E player base only having played 5E.
As a player since 1977, our generation of D&D player & DM were encouraged by our groups and by Gary Gygax himself to play many games, many genres and not at all just what TSR was publishing.
Secrets of Blackmoor did a great documentary on Blackmoor and on the twin city gaming scene. I think it’s free now on their TH-cam channel , but is rentable on Amazon prime.
I backed the crowdfunding for that. I enjoyed it but I was hoping for more details on Arneson and his gaming group due to the title but it ends up being more about the history of RPGs in general and the Braunstien group. Still a great look at RPG history but I think the real Blackmoor/Arneson stuff will be in their “Volume 2” if they ever get around to making it like they imply they want to.
@@JustinTotino I think they mentioned something liek that which is why they put it on TH-cam maybe to Jin up interest
As a reader of rules and partial collector who can’t get the original stuff, I love this
When he speaks about that first D&D session and his monk, you can see the emotional connection with that character in his eyes.
I'm 37 and started with AD&D with books my now deceased cousin gave me when in '94 I was 8. I usually tell my wife that I don't want anything for my birthday, but this is definitely something I'm going to request.
I'm a little doubtful that this is the first of a series.
I understand that Ben Riggs is working on a follow up to his Slaying the Dragon, talking about the WotC years which would necessarily have a lot about the development of 3E, 3.5, and likely 4E given what he's been talking about online and in seminars.
What they should do is make books that detail the game by the decade. 70's, 80's, etc. This is in addition to other books that detail by the edition.
I recomend that you pick up the Designers & Dragons series by Shannon Applecline. Great books about the whole industry published by each decade.
Others have done exactly that. I wouldn't trust Wizards to give an honest account. Especially after the Williams take over.
As they are now (under control of Hasbro), Wizards will mess up everything they touch. If they can ever become their own entity again, (and able to decide what they will do and how), then there will be a great chance they will start producing things people will find of high quality.
The Lore and Legends book is about the history of 5e. Meaby that is something to look at?
Walmart where I live redesigned like Target (past six months). Now I can't find the DnD books they had sold for a long while now. If anyone knows where they keep them, not in the new book section, let me know.
One Walmart I go to has them by the board games and another one has them by the Magic/Pokemon cards near the checkout.
@@39kelevra i will look at those locations. Thank you. I liked them better in the books.
It was fun to see your reaction to this video. You seemed to get more and more excited by about the book as the video went on. I'm excited for this book myself and I'm excited for people to experience OD&D which is my favorite version of the game. There's a primordial magic found in the original game that I think a lot of people will respond to. I don't have any delusions that most 5e players will want to play OD&D as their regular game, but I do think a few people might try it out to connect with the origins of the hobby.
I wonder why Jon Peterson, the guy who wrote it for them, isn't the one doing the interview?
Probably just because he's a busy guy and an independent author, and Jason is a full-time Wizards employee.
Probably. I'm just too paranoid when it comes to HASBRO and their intentions. I don't think I'll ever get used to D&D being in the hands of such a large corporation. Its hard to watch something that has meant so much to you over the years morph into something that is more informal and business like@@Mannahnin
what a beautiful and historical reproduction of the greatest roleplaying game!! I immediately pre-ordered this because it absolutely must have a place of honor on my gaming shelf.
nothing at all wrong with 5th edition. I have been playing since the mid 1980's and cut my teeth on AD&D, and still use A LOT of stuff from that era even in my current 5th edition game. We use a smattering from 3rd (and 3.5), not so much from 4th (although I do like the blo0died mechanic and will use it from time to time). While the "meat, bones, and flesh" of the game is 5E, the "hair" would be AD&D (tho no, we don't use thac0 haha). That all said.. I'm beyond excited for this History of book to come out.
I hope you’re having a great day everyone
I’m excited for the latest history book. “The Dark Days 1999 - now. Lol.
Its pretty Awesome to see how many RPG systems Jason Tondro has written for, D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Black Hack, Savage Worlds, Supers, Icons, Fate, Mutants & Masterminds, etc..
I'm buying this book.
Happy birthday to me too!
This ironically sounds like the hx of the Dead Three: a party of rivals who adventure for power then battle over godhood.
Promo SM 👊
I saw this video and immediately pre-ordered! Can't wait!
Arneson gets way too much credit. It was actually a fellow college student that came up with alternative rules to play a single character, rather than a full army. Arneson shows it to Gygax and Gygax codifies the rules for it. Arneson helps write some of the rules, but he was so bad at typing that Gygax ended up retyping all of it. As development continued, Arneson was always behind schedule and often delivered incomplete notes. The result was a lot of work for other developers. When Arneson was caught using the company car to sleep on the job, he was fired. Everything forward that Arneson made was never on schedule and he was fired from every game developer as a result.
eh without the figures he brought I doubt the OG games would have happened every history includes him for a reason on time or not he designed a lot of stuff I think Gary gets to much credit since most of what he did was just write stuff down
@smokedbeefandcheese4144 Gygax was working as a game designer for board game makers like Avalon. Arneson was a history major that specialized in naval warfare. His only job was the tickets guy at the county Faire. Arneson made most his money painting and selling ship miniatures. Arnesons contribution was mostly giving Gygax a great idea but he did very little of the work making it happen, which was why he was fired, despite being a founder. Most the credit should go Gygax and the Blooms.
@smokedbeefandcheese4144 look at it this way. When a judge looked at the final product and compared Arnesons contribution, he ruled that Arneson should get no credit for the work.
@@jaysw9585"No credit?" Arneson won a 2.5% royalty, that's huge
@PsyrenXY Arneson was a share holder up until he sold to Williams, even after he was fired. He refused to option his shares. Arneson only got credit for the base Whitebox. With ADnD and even the B/X, he got nothing, which was why he sued and lost. The judge ruled he only got credit for the original box that came out of Chainmail as he had no contribution to the final product for DnD.
D&D till ya DIE
This book looks incredible. I'll have to wait a bit to get it but am excited.
Dungeons and Dragons starts when Nerd Immersion's DM says "roll initiate"
How it's going...
They just couldn’t resist implying that the creators of D&D and the people that played the original game were horrible racists and that WotC, the very people responsible for the Hadozee and calling black people orcs, are better stewards of the game 😂😂😂
racism isn't when you do racism, it's when someone points out that something is racist and tries to fix it. fascinating
They did nothing of the kind. Admitting something is a product of its time isn’t the same as calling the people who made it horrible.
@HmmBearGrr wow! That's such a hard concept to get. You mean I can do the 'racisms' and not even know it? I could repeat racist troupes and not have any ill intent in my head? Fascinating! I need to try this whole 2024 thing out! I've been stuck in the 80s...
@@JustinTotinowho is saying this? That is your conscious reading way too much into it. Face it! Well meaning white dudes from the 1970s might not have been the best at world building when it came to stuff like "the Oriental Adventures". They didn't even have the 'internets', bro.
And shocker! Some of these dudes were pretty whack and racist. Not like Gary Gygax or Ed but we have more than enough "horror stories" of even modern DnD people being blatantly racist/sexist/homophobic. I'm from the 1980s, dude. It's so much better now when it comes to representation and we still have a lot of work to do. The Hadozee "fix" was from some older fan working at WOTC and the dude obviously had no black friends because he boned it up again. The fix was also racist. We need to expand our minds a little more I'm afraid. And that me putting it gently.
@@JustinTotino BS, they said that it wouldn't pass sensitivity readers if it was published today. That implies that they think that the original game is racist. Nice try though. But yeah, wizards have come so far! LOL. They just love diversity! Is that why they don't want white people playing the game anymore?
I think the problem with this book is that it will be extremely sugarcoated. WotC will not say a single thing about either creator that is true about their personalities. Gygax was an obsessive compulsive, that was a great person to be around but very demanding which rubbed people the wrong way. Arneson was very lazy and couldnt type. He had good ideas, but couldnt write them down and Gygax wouldnt share any credit for something he did all the hard work on. Then you have the Blooms which are just as important as Gygax and Arneson. Without the Bloom brothers, there would be no DnD. Would suggest reading Game Wizards for a more accurate account of what was going on.
There are plenty of other books and documentaries if you want all the ugly and sordid aspects of these men's lives. This book is largely a celebration of the roots of the game. Let the dead rest in peace.
@PsyrenXY that stuff is important to how they got there. How Gygax stepped away to get the film rights, the Bloom brothers nepotistism, Williams buying out the Blooms, Garycon, ext. Them trying to sell to Avalon, which was going under. It wasnt just a couple of buddies working in their basement. They had no idea what they were doing and somehow they made it happen with no backing. Gary was working as a shoe repairmen while trying to raise two kids and design game rules on the side. How they did it is just as important as what they did.
It's by Jon Peterson, the same guy who wrote Game Wizards. I think your concerns about sanitization are possibly misplaced.
Ya I think I’ll pass
I hope they don't skip over the sordid details a certain author already covered. Especially regarding Gygax being a total bastard.
Which author? A lot of the details about the Gygax/Arneson conflict are in Game Wizards, which was written by Jon Peterson as this book is.
