- To properly explore a country it is a must to indulge in local food. That's why I decided to make my way to Aluthkade or Hulftsdorp which is the place to be for streetfood in Colombo.
Upon my arrival I realized that I was actually a bit early to the party. Most street food stalls would only open around 6 or 7pm and I was there around 3pm already.
As there were a few shops and stalls already open I tried some. I started off with some Sri Lankan pastries: Chicken Samosa, Maldives Fish Pastry and Sri Lankan Egg Roll. All very tasty, especially when combined with a nice masala chai.
After that I continued walking around the area where I saw the All Saints Church that looks very similar to the church (which is a basilic now) of the city I grew up in. The Saint-Hermes Basilic in Ronse, Belgium.
After that I tried the famous Sri Lankan string hopper. This is usually served for breakfast but I tried a quick one on the go. The vendor wouldn't accept any money for it. How kind!
After all that eating it was time to rinse it down with a juice. This juice was a double layered one and the taste resembled of that of a mojito. Even though it looked nothing like it they also called it a mojito, without alcohol that is.
I continued walking around and met some lovely ladies that liked posing for the camera.
Then, finally the time had come to try my last street food dish in Aluthkade. It wasn't a Sri Lankan dish. As a matter of fact, it was a Belgian dish! That's why I couldn't skip it. It is my duty as a Belgian to try fries when they are advertised in the belgian way.
I ended up hanging out with the owners for about an hour while tasting their delicious food. If you're in Aluthkade definitely go there!
After that one of the guys proposed to bring me back to my hotel on his bike. I tried paying for the ride but he wouldn't accept any money. Some real authentic Sri Lankan hospitality!

Lovely people and beautiful country it seems. Despite of the economic crisis, they are still hospitable and generous. Visiting Sri Lanka will be in my next bucket list.

After that Huge meal in aluthkade, they offered it free of charge. But when you insisted on paying they said "ok you can pay Rs.100".

2:50 Maldive fish is a staple of Sri Lankan cuisine, you can pretty much eat it with (almost) anything 😂 The Sinhala word is Umbalakada, while in Tamil it's Maasi (this is the word the gentleman used)
Edit: 4:20 Speaking of sushi, I once made makizushi with some Maldive fish curry inside, it surprisingly works haha

The street food area you visited is called Aluth Kade (which means new shops built additions to Petta Market by the British period). The area is called Hulftsdrop because, during the Dutch ruling period, this area is called Hulftsdrop. Hulfts was a Dutch Army Leader. The Church you show in the video would have been built by Dutch. That is why you saw similarities with your country's church.
Correction : The Church was built by a set of anglican sinhalese including the bandaranaike family during the british era.
Definitely within two weeks you would be very famous person. Your smile, attitude,talk with each other. Everything is perfect 👍love Belgium 🇧🇪

The street food in Aluthkade you went to is a trick brought by the Muslims to bring the Muslim food that was rejected by the Sinhalese back to the Sinhalese people after the bomb. Muslims came to Sri Lanka as immigrants. It is not the food of the natives of Sri Lanka that you have eaten. To eat them, you need to go to the southern part of Sri Lanka like galle,matara and hillcountry like kandy,matale and middlecountry like anuradhapura, polonnaruwa and the areas where the indigenous people of the Vanni region live.

Hello Tim. As a Scotsman who lived in what was then The Dominion of British Ceylon back in the 1950s, I can confirm to you that the Town now known as Aluth Kade was formerly a Dutch settlement of *HULTSDORP or as we Brits referred to is HULTSDORF. I never knew they had changed the name of the town from HULTSDORP to Aluth Kade." I know the church you refer to as it was a former Dutch Reformed Church and was built some time back in the late 1600s/1700s when the Dutch ruled the country. The Dutch presence in Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) lasted 150 years, officially from 1658 when the Dutch expelled the Portuguese, until 1796, the year of the British occupation, so you can say that the church was probably built between 1658 and 1796.* That church contained all the records of Dutch families in what was then the Dutch Colony of Ceylon. Cheers!

Fred Medis, a historian says, “The All Saints Church was previously a seminary for the training of priests for the Church. During British times in 1815 the Anglicans held services at All Saints Church.

Enjoyed your previous videos. This video really liked the church building, not seen before. Hope you will show lot other new, interesting, beautiful places of Sri Lanka not yet discovered. The street food place video, probably there are 100reds and 100reds of ppl are doing that place. Almost like an advertisement and promotion for just one place among other thousands of foods places available in Colombo. Lol after a while it's just gets so boring watching that place.....only thing to do when watching is just fast forward it. People at that street food place doesn't look genuine. It's like putting up show for a foreigner on camera. Hope you will discover new interesting, beautiful places to show...like the newly opened Pearl Bay Water Park.

You should go beach areas ( hikkaduwa/negombo/unawatuna/galle) and mountain areas ( kandy/elle)
