DMC5 is better than DMC3 only when it comes to gameplay, as it is simply a more refined DMC3 gameplay with some additional abilities. But when it comes to story, level design, atmosphere, even structure and pacing, Devil May Cry 3 is the best one.

Am I the only one who thinks the story of Dante is unbelievably sad??? Dante = half-breed, who even can't be sure if he belongs to the human race or demon race. For humans he is a demon. For demons he is a human. Both sides hate him, fear him, want to kill him. His whole family is destroyed. He never had the chance to meet his father, which is now imprisoned. His mother was killed when he was too young. His only last family member, older twin brother hates him and became his arch enemy. He has been forced to almost kill his own brother - which is now lost in the demon world, where he will be corrupted and enslaved forever... to fight with Dante once again. I'm not jealous for Dante's fate, really not.
I'll have to disagree on Virgil "hating" Dante. Yes, they relationship is unstable, but its not out of hatred. They only find themselves on opposite sides of the board. The brothers do care for eachother, I'm sure, but the tragedy of their mother is what divides them. If Dante decided to gain power, like Virgil, then I'm sure Virgil would welcome him and vice versa.

Recently beat DMC 3, loved the story. People bring up feeling bad for what Dante had to go through, but I think the real tragedy is through Vergil's demise with the secret ending. There's a nuance that's barely noticeable in his last scene. While he sounds confident in himself about to fight 'the prince of darkness', notice he threw away his scabbard. Completely uncharacteristic of Vergil, who's most elegant and always sheaths his Yamato immediately after use. According to old Eastern swordsman code, there is never EVER a reason for one to toss their scabbard . . . unless the wielder feels it will be the last time they can. In other words, if they think this fight will mean their death. Seeing as how DMC 3 was obsessed with subtle body language in all of its cutscenes, this had to have been intentional. It's almost as if, despite his vow of confidence, Vergil knows deep down that this will be his last real fight before his end. For anyone that already played DMC 1 and is aware he becomes Nelo Angelo makes it even sadder. This was such a perfect way to end this concise saga of Dante's brother (and I'll be pissed if DMC5 throws it all away by having him make a contextual return).

Yeah don't get me wrong, it does take away bringing him back in dmc5. But in dmc1 mundus only says "vergil has been defeated" not that he actually died. And also - were getting vergil back I am contractually obligated to be hype
Best DMC EVER. And one of the best ( and sadest ) ends that i saw in a videogame. It's so...poetic..and at the same time chaotic (in a good way). Dante defeated Vergil because he accepted his demon and human sides... While Vergil denied his human side , seeking for power to nevermore face another loss ( Eva, his mother) . In the end , Dante lost all his family, all the people he loved... But he carried on ! That's the meaning of final battle against the demons. That's maybe also the messange the game want to show us : In life we'll face a lot of demons, our inner demons and the outer demons, we 'll eventually lose people we love , but we need to have strength to keep fighting ... for the other people who se love and who rely on us.. people who fight on our side ..
That's why I loved devil may cry 4. Dante knew he had a nephew. He still had some family and someone who would fight for what was right. I believe dante was really happy at the end of dmc4
In my opinion I think the ending of this game is really sad. Dante lost his only family member left, who he had to kill in Devil May Cry 1. You could tell Vergil loved Dante very deeply but they had two completely different personalities. Vergil wanted to gain power to protect who he loved (Dante) because he didn't have the power to protect his mother so he wants to gain power to make sure Dante does not die like Eva (Vergil's And Dante's mother).

Since when did "shirtless trenchcoat = gay? lol He was dressed that way to juxtapose his personality more with Vergil because his normal DMC1 outfit actually looks more similar to Vergil's style of dress than this one. They wanted to draw emphasis to the guy's carefree non-chalant attitude. Like "I'm too badass or carefree to even bother putting on a shirt today. I'm just gonna throw on my coat and party!" Then we have Virgil nicely dressed, with an ascot.
Damn, the ending is sad. Vergil fought the Demon god Mundus got corrupted and died. That also explains why Dante is more serious in DMC2. His life is pretty sad.
Well he doesn't seem to have died now that DMC5 is coming and he's in it. He was still corrupted but hopefully Vergil can still get a better ending this time.
+Kupo Warkson Well, Vergil's motivation is to become all powerful so "that wont ever happen again" referring to his mother being killed by demons (as well as embracing his demon heritage since he looks up to Sparda). The only two people we know Vergil has left to protect are Dante and whoever Nero's mother is, meaning he's trying to defeat his brother, to protect his brother. Whilst they will stab eachother to near death neither of them would ever intentionally kill the other. So, no killing Dante would be counterintuitive to his entire being.

10:08 If you pay attention closely, Vergil actually throws his scabbard aside, and runs towards Mundus with just Yamato on hand. It's almost as if it was a subtle hint towards how Yamato and the Zweihander are related. It also appears to indicate in DMC4 that the scabbard is actually conjured by the sword for when it's not to be used, which is quite convenient! And it explains why you don't see at first when Nero gets the sword...kind of.
Rose-shrouded Confessor I haven't played DMC 4 yet, though I look forward to playing it. When Vergil threw that away it actually meant he was accepting defeat and death because he knew he couldn't beat Mundus, especially in a weakened state. I'm not an expert on the history of swords and warriors, but when a warrior in Vergils fighting style throws the sheath away before combat, it means they're ready to die. While what you said about the Zweihander and Yamato is probably true, that's not why he threw it, he threw it because he knew Mundus was going to beat and probably even kill him. Truly tragic when you think about it.
5 years late, but it’s also a samurai thing to throw sheath when you know you are about to die in battle, so Vergil charged Mundus knowing he was gonna fall
When was a kid, (And now as an Adult) I always thought Dante and Lady's relationship was akin to a Brother/Sister bond. How Lady comforts him when he lost Vergil, his only family left and Lady, now she killed her Father, is now the sole survivor of her family, and cheers him up by doing their favorite pastime; killing demons. Even in the anime, their sibling like friendship is shown when he borrows from her and she hassles him for him to pay her back. There are even times when they annoy and tease each other with Lady's clothing bills and Dante's cheating her at poker. Seriously they are very happy to have each other in their lives after this life changing ordeal of losing their respective families.
Although I wouldn't put Devil May Cry 3 as my best game ever, I don't think any characters can compare to Dante and Lady. They're my 2 favourite video game characters ever.

To me the symbolism of Dante reaching out to vergil when he falls from tha ledge only for Vergil to cut his hand is very heartbreaking bc he didn't do it out of hate or spite but bc he wanted to mark Dante so Dante wouldn't forget about him and so that he would remember that even though he's not by his side or able to spar with him that he would always be with him in spirit and that as much as they hate each other deep down they love each other bc Dante is all that Vergil has and Vergil is all that Dante has and when Vergil met his downfall Dante had no other family until he met Nero which gave him hope again
Got to be one of the most phenomenal endings ever. The resolution, the nuance of a devil crying for a loved one, the demon slaughter in the end with a kick-ass song that i still listen to this day in my smartphone. I know this game for more than 10 years and it's still in my mind. I just love Devil May Cry 3. Magnum-opus of all hack'n slash games.
So, something interesting that was pointed out on either Twitter or Tumblr, but in the bonus scene with Vergil, if you know about his laijutsu style, it's a very Eastern trained style, in which wiping the blood and sheathing the sword meant you were certainly victorious... same held true for older eastern sword wielding... wipe the blood off and sheathe the sword... about the only time you would not do that is when you throw the saya (Scabbard) away... which meant you were certain you were going to fight, but uncertain if you were going to come back from the fight alive.... look at what Vergil does @ 10:08 He threw the Saya to Yamato away... HE KNEW that it was more than possible he would lose!
Vergil throws his sheath away at the end - wtf? Has he given up before starting the fight? Or did he think he didn't need the sheath and instead going "all in swords blazing" would be the better approach? Whatever. This ending gets me every single time lol. It's cheesy as fuck and I get embarassed watching it, but somehow it's deeply emotional for me. I dunno, maybe I'm stupid.
It's badly acted but hey it's enjoyable and it is emotional since Dante lost his brother after believing he was dead for most of his life. Must be heartbreaking to have your only family member left to throw himself away like that. And the end, you can't tell me you don't get pumped at when Dante yells and that demon rush starts
Of course I get pumped. I said that I enjoy it a lot and that it's highly emotional for me, despite being extremely cheesy. I'd like to believe that DmC happened before DMC3, but I guess we should look at the new DmC franchise as its own universe. I don't think that DmC would fit in as a prequel to DMC3. I mean it would seem plausible but the world of DMC3 is so vastly different from the one in DmC. I hope Capcom makes a "real" DMC5 where they explore Dante and Vergil even more (maybe make a game focused on Vergil? You know, a prequel to DMC3 where you play the origins of Vergil as a demon-hunter or something like that). But I also hope that a DmC2 is made for next gen consoles. I really enjoyed DmC, despite all the hate it got. I, of course, prefer DMC3 and DMC (not DMC4 so much), but DmC was a decent game with fun gameplay and in my opinion, an intriguing story. The whole twin-thing was done in a cool way in DmC I think. It wasn't done very well or anything, but it was done well enough to be cool. I loved Vergil's new coat. Dante... not so much. His red coat from DMC3 and DMC4 look much cooler IMO, but the hair was fine (the short black hair; although I would've liked the long white one better). But Vergil's black coat with the blue stuff on it looked extremely badass and very classy. And I loved Vergil's messy look in the first three levels of Vergil's Downfall. He looked badass. But his super-saiyan version looked kinda stupid. I hope that if DmC2 is made, Vergil still has the same black/blue coat, probably with a little bit more blue, but without the stupid glowing eyes and the super-saiyan aura. Just make him like in DmC, but with the hair like in DMC3. And they need to bring in a lot more of the lore and stuff from the "old" DMC games. You know, the Force Edge needs to be there. Sparda needs to be explored. Sorry for spamming you. I wanted to write that down. :)
With the way things are going at Capcom I wouldn't expected anything new from DMC in general. I do agree with seeing a game about Vergil but that seems like a fantasy these days.
I've only just noticed, end of mission 7 Vergil slices Dante's right wrist with Dante falling, end of mission 20 Vergil slices Dante's left hand with Vergil falling, this is very deep considering with wrist on the right, it is most common for people to use right hand and the wrist as for restricted movement or, restricted mind Dante had, as for the other Dante gets his left hand cut, meaning he has more control and is more unique showing he overcame things not many people would overcome after these events, what an amazing game.
the subtle use of body language in this game always amazed me. As another commenter pointed out, vergil threw away his scabbard before charging towards mundus, something he never once did in the entire game. That action represents a swordman basically believing that it is his final battle, and he charged towards near-certain doom, knowing he would lose.
The relationship between Dante and Vergil in DMC3 is executed damn near flawlessly. Both with opposing ideologies that stemmed from one tragic event, yet both of them appear to be very rational to us. Vergil, a hybrid of Demon and Human, had always believe that "Might controls everything". Leading him into his demonic heritage which revolved around his philosophy and meaning. Believing that without power, one cannot protect anything. Which can both reference Sparda's unprecedented power against the likes of Mundus, Argosax, Beowulf, and many other notorious demons that surfaced the human world. Or Eva's death, Vergil consciously noting that if he had more power he could've protected his own mother. Yet, he had always felt restricted by his human side. Influencing him on a power hungry run. Whereas Dante simply did not simply like Demons for what they did to his family. That was his original motive until meeting Vergil again, thus realizing. This was more than just a "party". Comprehending the meaning of family, heart, and human, the flare of which Sparda had to fend off his demon brethren, later caught onto Dante. Having both the blood and soul of sparda, enlightened him to stop a demon such as Vergil. Dante, someone who sided with humanity just like Sparda. His purpose literally is hinted in the title " Dante's awakening". Both these siblings share a strong tie to Sparda but in both different manners. I can't remember the last time video game siblings had such a strong connection like this.

I felt so badass in the fight during the credits. I didn't take any damage, I didn't miss a single shot or hit, I didn't mess up any combos, I didn't spam Stinger, and I only used Rebellion and Ebony & Ivory.

Seeing vergil go fucking breaks my heart especially just recently when i beat the game after the last time i played that when i was just a kid and vergil was my favorite. I loved the game but didn't get the story back then. But now since i replayed it when im grown i get the story more and its really sad seeing vergil go i hope they bring the man back in DMC 5 if they ever announce it

+Kupo Warkson Well, Vergil's motivation is to become all powerful so "that wont ever happen again" referring to his mother being killed by demons (as well as embracing his demon heritage since he looks up to Sparda). The only two people we know Vergil has left to protect are Dante and whoever Nero's mother is, meaning he's trying to defeat his brother, to protect his brother. Whilst they will stab eachother to near death neither of them would ever intentionally kill the other. So, no killing Dante would be counterintuitive to his entire being.

If you pay attention closely, Vergil actually throws his scabbard aside, and runs towards Mundus with just Yamato on hand. It's almost as if it was a subtle hint towards how Yamato and the Zweihander are related. It also appears to indicate in DMC4 that the scabbard is actually conjured by the sword for when it's not to be used, which is quite convenient! And it explains why you don't see at first when Nero gets the sword...kind of.
Rose-shrouded Confessor I haven't played DMC 4 yet, though I look forward to playing it. When Vergil threw that away it actually meant he was accepting defeat and death because he knew he couldn't beat Mundus, especially in a weakened state. I'm not an expert on the history of swords and warriors, but when a warrior in Vergils fighting style throws the sheath away before combat, it means they're ready to die. While what you said about the Zweihander and Yamato is probably true, that's not why he threw it, he threw it because he knew Mundus was going to beat and probably even kill him. Truly tragic when you think about it.
5 years late, but it’s also a samurai thing to throw sheath when you know you are about to die in battle, so Vergil charged Mundus knowing he was gonna fall
When was a kid, (And now as an Adult) I always thought Dante and Lady's relationship was akin to a Brother/Sister bond. How Lady comforts him when he lost Vergil, his only family left and Lady, now she killed her Father, is now the sole survivor of her family, and cheers him up by doing their favorite pastime; killing demons. Even in the anime, their sibling like friendship is shown when he borrows from her and she hassles him for him to pay her back. There are even times when they annoy and tease each other with Lady's clothing bills and Dante's cheating her at poker. Seriously they are very happy to have each other in their lives after this life changing ordeal of losing their respective families.

Although I wouldn't put Devil May Cry 3 as my best game ever, I don't think any characters can compare to Dante and Lady. They're my 2 favourite video game characters ever.

To me the symbolism of Dante reaching out to vergil when he falls from tha ledge only for Vergil to cut his hand is very heartbreaking bc he didn't do it out of hate or spite but bc he wanted to mark Dante so Dante wouldn't forget about him and so that he would remember that even though he's not by his side or able to spar with him that he would always be with him in spirit and that as much as they hate each other deep down they love each other bc Dante is all that Vergil has and Vergil is all that Dante has and when Vergil met his downfall Dante had no other family until he met Nero which gave him hope again
Got to be one of the most phenomenal endings ever.
The resolution, the nuance of a devil crying for a loved one, the demon slaughter in the end with a kick-ass song that i still listen to this day in my smartphone. I know this game for more than 10 years and it's still in my mind.

So, something interesting that was pointed out on either Twitter or Tumblr, but in the bonus scene with Vergil, if you know about his laijutsu style, it's a very Eastern trained style, in which wiping the blood and sheathing the sword meant you were certainly victorious... same held true for older eastern sword wielding... wipe the blood off and sheathe the sword... about the only time you would not do that is when you throw the saya (Scabbard) away... which meant you were certain you were going to fight, but uncertain if you were going to come back from the fight alive.... look at what Vergil does @ 10:08

Whatever. This ending gets me every single time lol. It's cheesy as fuck and I get embarassed watching it, but somehow it's deeply emotional for me. I dunno, maybe I'm stupid.
It's badly acted but hey it's enjoyable and it is emotional since Dante lost his brother after believing he was dead for most of his life. Must be heartbreaking to have your only family member left to throw himself away like that.
And the end, you can't tell me you don't get pumped at when Dante yells and that demon rush starts
Of course I get pumped. I said that I enjoy it a lot and that it's highly emotional for me, despite being extremely cheesy.
I'd like to believe that DmC happened before DMC3, but I guess we should look at the new DmC franchise as its own universe. I don't think that DmC would fit in as a prequel to DMC3. I mean it would seem plausible but the world of DMC3 is so vastly different from the one in DmC. I hope Capcom makes a "real" DMC5 where they explore Dante and Vergil even more (maybe make a game focused on Vergil? You know, a prequel to DMC3 where you play the origins of Vergil as a demon-hunter or something like that). But I also hope that a DmC2 is made for next gen consoles. I really enjoyed DmC, despite all the hate it got. I, of course, prefer DMC3 and DMC (not DMC4 so much), but DmC was a decent game with fun gameplay and in my opinion, an intriguing story. The whole twin-thing was done in a cool way in DmC I think. It wasn't done very well or anything, but it was done well enough to be cool. I loved Vergil's new coat. Dante... not so much. His red coat from DMC3 and DMC4 look much cooler IMO, but the hair was fine (the short black hair; although I would've liked the long white one better). But Vergil's black coat with the blue stuff on it looked extremely badass and very classy. And I loved Vergil's messy look in the first three levels of Vergil's Downfall. He looked badass. But his super-saiyan version looked kinda stupid. I hope that if DmC2 is made, Vergil still has the same black/blue coat, probably with a little bit more blue, but without the stupid glowing eyes and the super-saiyan aura. Just make him like in DmC, but with the hair like in DMC3. And they need to bring in a lot more of the lore and stuff from the "old" DMC games. You know, the Force Edge needs to be there. Sparda needs to be explored.

I've always thought this ending was sad
I've only just noticed, end of mission 7 Vergil slices Dante's right wrist with Dante falling, end of mission 20 Vergil slices Dante's left hand with Vergil falling, this is very deep considering with wrist on the right, it is most common for people to use right hand and the wrist as for restricted movement or, restricted mind Dante had, as for the other Dante gets his left hand cut, meaning he has more control and is more unique showing he overcame things not many people would overcome after these events, what an amazing game.
the subtle use of body language in this game always amazed me. As another commenter pointed out, vergil threw away his scabbard before charging towards mundus, something he never once did in the entire game. That action represents a swordman basically believing that it is his final battle, and he charged towards near-certain doom, knowing he would lose.
The relationship between Dante and Vergil in DMC3 is executed damn near flawlessly. Both with opposing ideologies that stemmed from one tragic event, yet both of them appear to be very rational to us.
Vergil, a hybrid of Demon and Human, had always believe that "Might controls everything". Leading him into his demonic heritage which revolved around his philosophy and meaning. Believing that without power, one cannot protect anything. Which can both reference Sparda's unprecedented power against the likes of Mundus, Argosax, Beowulf, and many other notorious demons that surfaced the human world. Or Eva's death, Vergil consciously noting that if he had more power he could've protected his own mother. Yet, he had always felt restricted by his human side. Influencing him on a power hungry run.
Whereas Dante simply did not simply like Demons for what they did to his family. That was his original motive until meeting Vergil again, thus realizing. This was more than just a "party". Comprehending the meaning of family, heart, and human, the flare of which Sparda had to fend off his demon brethren, later caught onto Dante. Having both the blood and soul of sparda, enlightened him to stop a demon such as Vergil. Dante, someone who sided with humanity just like Sparda. His purpose literally is hinted in the title " Dante's awakening".
Both these siblings share a strong tie to Sparda but in both different manners. I can't remember the last time video game siblings had such a strong connection like this.
