  • Rob shows how to make a larger wood hinge for anything from cabinet doors to blanket chest. Our new Wood Hinge Drill Kit allows for 1/4", 3/8", 1/2 and 3/4" dowels. Rob learned this technique from Dale Nish while studying Industrial Technology at BYU. www.robcosman.com/tools_drillj...

    I loved Dale Nish. He taught a 5-day woodturning class I took with my wife. Dale was a wonderful teacher and a better man.

    Thank you Rob for sharing, I think I'll include this in a project and turn a dowel to a bigger size and increase the router size to match.😄📐🔨👍

    Thanks Rob
    I've been noodling around with this idea after seeing your previous video. Thinking about brass tube, and using short lengths of tube to cut hardwood pins, cut by the tube itself. Fun.

    Excellent work. How would you recommend flushing off the remaining dowel on the back when it's done? I'd hate to mess up the rods in there.

    Love the hinge kit, Rob. Always looking for a way around hardware. Working on a hope chest now and decided to give your lid stays from this video a try. Wondering how you attached them to lid and side. Was thinking of using threaded inserts with a little loctite threadlocker on the machine screws to keep them from moving on me. Any thoughts? Appreciate all the great videos

    Cool technique, thanks Rob. I wonder if you have any suggestions for cutting the grooves in a hand tool only shop? Hollowing plane or rounded blade on a plow plane maybe?

      I would cut a V slot in my piece and I would wrap some sand paper on the dowel to be used for the hinge and carefully sand it round. Check often for fit.

    A rod parter will help tremendously in cutting your welding wire to length without distorting the cut ends. I found mine at a yard sale for $15

    Love this hinge. Just curious, once the holes are piloted why not run all the way through with a single metal rod?

    hi Rob
    I was only inquiring last month if you had any plans to make larger sized kits for larger dowels, now I dont have too. I am delighted you made this video and kit that can accommodate almost any size dowel for furniture making. I am a big fan and user of your 1/4" dowel maker and I will most definitely be adding this kit to my Cosman collection. one question_ how did you make the 3/4" Dowel? is it the same technique as the 1/4"? Cheers Dan

    Hi Rob - I was wondering if you have any suggestions for making the wooden hinge using only hand tools. I could use you dowel kit to make the hinge but how could I cut the circular “grooves” in a box and lid using hand tools? Cheers, Bill.

    Other than the difficulty of centring all the way through a dowel is there any reason not to use a single piece of welding rod all the way through the length of the hinge?

    are you going to offer a kit with the router bits as well ?

    • @Arterexius
      @Arterexius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, as router bits are easy to obtain in practically any size you could need. And then it's just a matter of increasing/decreasing the depth of the plunge

    I have 7018, and 6011 welding rods, which do you think would work best for this application?
    I'm joking :)

    HI Rob, why was the 5/8" dowel size passed over for the hinge kit?

    • @RobCosmanWoodworking
      @RobCosmanWoodworking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tomx63 I’ve never found a need for that specific size. If it’s too big for 1/2” the 3/4” will do just fine.

    i just found your channel. like your perfect craftsmanship but dislike the imperial measurement. there's allot of calculating for me to understand the dimensions and what your talking about. i subbed btw;)

    • @snepNL
      @snepNL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also if you read this. would it be possible to put the metric dimensions on screen? that would be extremely handy and i (and i think allot of Europeans) would like it allot!

    • @snepNL
      @snepNL 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Cosman i use a imperial to metric scheme while i watch you vids. allot of pauze and play acaurs. a 20 min vid will take me over 30 mins to watch. still would it be possible to put metric measurements on screen for the metric system users in your new vids? allot of love and envy yours truly Edd
