James I really enjoyed the video. I don't usually watch a video that long but you kept my interest the whole way. Lot's of good tips. I especially enjoyed the knife sheath. That is a thing of beauty. Just started watching the old videos on this channel. I think a lot of people missed the point of this channel, teaching along with entertainment. Making the knife sheath and backpack would definitely not be needed to a point but it gives you two benefits. Keeps your mind busy from boredom and creates useful tools. Plus he is showing us something that may come in handy if you have to last longer than 24 hours and need to move. Good video on both aspects.

I like this video. This guy went out into the woods with 10 dollars worth of stuff and stayed 24 hours and made a video about it and demonstrated a whole lot of simple but advanced bushcraft stuff

I searched dollar store camp challenge. I saw this one and said "oh this is one of my channels". I subbed you a couple months ago. I generally don't visit channels, I see something, if I subscribe I take it from there. Anyway, I enjoy watching these type videos, I've seen some good ones and I've seen some silly ones. This one however, is the best I have ever seen. What a great presentation. A well thought out demonstration of knowledge and skills. Hello, greetings from Southern Ohio. Yes, me too! Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Some people tend to think they know a lot about these type of adventures. I guess it's human nature but I hope everyone learned a little something (or a lot) from this video. I know I did. Like the dog bowl idea. I'm sure it's the best bowl in Dollar Tree. Was wondering if you were hearing a Big Foot tree knock at that 3:00 a.m., awakening. Just having some fun. I've also got a suggestion. I noticed the dog in the beginning. I know I take my canine with me everywhere possible. If a significant other isn't available, we could use our furry friend. Learned years ago that's where the saying 2 or 3 dog night came from. Meaning how cold the night becomes. Of course, if you have a chihuahua it might not work. Anyhow, Mike from OPP lead me here. Appreciate the shared knowledge & the time you took to educate us. Looking forward to upcoming videos.

Would depend on the season in the UK as regards the £ shops. Spring/summer, you're good. Lots of gardening stuff, even some camping and cycling stuff and the tools DIY section. Autumn/winter you'd struggle.
Clothes you have on... I could 'tent' in them haha at minus 3 celcius (like here now in the Netherlands) Those clip-on lights I have a couple in a bag right here, none of them work unfortunately. I just ran across your video and enjoyed it. Learned a few new bushcrafting ideas. I'm a newbie bushcrafter, so I'm soaking up a lot of info I'm finding on TH-cam. In an actual survival emergency there's a few things I think I would have done differently, but your ideas worked out just fine. One thing I might add, Top Ramen can be eaten dry. Crush it up in the package first, then open. Then eat like potato chips. I use to do that for a snack back in college. lol Thanks.
Wow that is a cool wooden sheath you came up with😎👍If you bend that cardboard from the knife package in half and wrap it in tape you'd have a perfect sheath as well,only temporary...nothing like the one you came up with ...bravo sir👏
Thank you so much. I was trying to demonstrate the bushcraft uses of even dollar store items. I also wanted to do something different than other channels in this challenge plus, I wanted to save the rest of the duck tape for my shelter. I ended up using every bit of it for the backpack straps and then to tape the garbage bag together. There was only 30 feet of it to begin with.
Since watching this video some time ago I have watched several other $10.00 challenges, I would vote your video in first place as your confidence and bushcraft skills make a daunting task seem fun.

Good pick on your items. You still had extra garbage bags. you can use them as a sleeping bag to stay warmer. Just an extra idea. Love you videos. Keep it up.
A fine video! Id have personally forgone the jute cordage for the water bottle or a hardier water storage, but still interesting seeing you go about it.
I used all of the duct tape making the straps for the pack and then putting together the shelter at night. Plus, I wanted to demonstrate how you could make a much more durable and safer sheath using wood. Duct tape sheaths are not very safe as the knife can cut through them pretty easily.
i enjoyed the video, but spending 24 minutes of a 51 minute video on making a backpack and knife sheath is too much. That leaves 27 minutes to cover finding a place to camp, building your camp, and surviving the night.

People sleep on dollar tree but seriously look around in there. The paracord WILL surpass your expectations 😂 they've got all kinda of really good little things. On an unrelated note, the LA totally awesome cleaning products are in fact, totally awesome 😂 i use all kinds of things people cant believe came from the dollar store. Night lights, gardening tools, twine, rope, all the different tapes, gardening seeds, plant starters, the list is endless 🥴😆 The snacks are bomb also
That sheath would make a great gift, add magnets to the back and hang on fridge or in campervan. I love the methods used. I knew this would be worth watching, even if the context was making for frustrating viewing.
Your tarp, laid out, then wrapped around all of the other gear, would be the pack, that ties to the frame with a diamond 0 hitch. The cordage could secure the knife sheath together with 3 or 4 loops. That would save many yards of valuable cordage. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Ten bucks at Dollar Tree can easily score you the finest Chinesium "10 C's of Survival", and I personally dont think you need any food for a 24hour period but its nice to have. In my opinion that "knife sheath" was a waste of time, energy, and resources when there was cardboard and duct tape right to hand, which have been far less bulky than that chunk of log. O.o
There was no duct tape left. And, I don't like duct tape and cardboard sheaths as they are not durable and can be cut through easily with the sharp blade. Thank you for watching.
@@WayPointSurvival Thank you for the reply. You used duct tape on your shelter after you had made the 'sheath' so you certainly had tape left. And yes cardboard scabbards can be flimsy but it would have certainly lasted for the duration of your outing. Your log 'sheath' was probably good practice using those tools, and you certainly didn't need those resources for the short duration of your video, however in a longer term scenario I believe a different, less labor and resource intensive, design would be preferred. If not tape and cardboard then perhaps tape n sticks, a section of Reed, fire baked clay, cloth hardened with coal-pitch, etc. Even though I may disagree a little its still good to see people in the woods. :)
Thanks for responding. I also purposely didn't use the duct tape because after making the backpack straps, I planned ahead and wanted to have enough to use for the garbage bag shelter. There was, after all, only 30 feet of tape if I remember correctly. I used it all up taping the bags together. There wouldn't have been enough for a sheath anyway. Plus, I wanted to show that you could indeed do relatively more intensive bushcraft tasks with the cheap dollar store items.

Loved the video! Very informative and resourceful. When the knife packaging fell apart, I would have just folded the cardboard, snugly, around the blade and sealed the sheath with duct tape. I love your wood sheath idea. Much more sustainable.

$1 1 gallon jug of water. if not dressed warmly enough, you'll need a box of trash bags. If the local debris is too wet/rotten/absent to use as insulation, youll have to gut one of them big rolls of cardboard behind wally's, big lots, Lowes, etc. an haul off as much cardboard as you can carry. Stuff some bags to put under you and over you. Cut strips of plastic off of the mouths of the bags and twist those strips into cordage. Use pebbles inside of the debris-stuffed bags and slip knots over the pebbles from outside the bags to join 3-4 bags into a layer over you and another layer under you Then combine the layers into a giant "bag" into which you crawl, feet first. If it's raining, youll need a plastic membrane over you Get a "painter's drop cloth" for that chore. Most of them are 9x12 ft in size. Use some more strips from the garbage bags to tie the plastic sheeting to stakes That's all you need for an overnight. $5, not 10. You can buy a package of flour tortillas and mixed PB and jelly with the remaining $5. In today's money, it wouild cost twice as much as it did back then, but $10 would still suffice, You just would not have any food, but that' dosnt matter for a mere overnight, or even an entire weekend.
When i was really poor i would use bread bags or grocery bags like the dollar store bags you have for boot liners to keep my socks dry inside of the boots if I didn't have waterproof boots. It works if your careful, its a life saver.

I don’t think I would have waisted so much time making a backpack just wrap everything in the tarp tape the ends make a long strip to use as a sling then use bark to make the sheath instead of beating up the only knife I had with me I don’t know I’m not a survival expert I’m just saying I don’t think I would’ve done it that way not to mention the possible injuries that could have occurred
In a survival situation, one of your greatest enemies is boredom. Being able to stay busy by making things is very important. If you know what you're doing, there is no real danger of hurting yourself or beating up the knife. It was just fine and useful the way it was. Also, if you've ever carried anything for any distance, you'll know how useful proper backpack straps can be. Thanks for watching and for sharing your opinion!
Great video. Very much enjoyed it. Interesting challenge With a long fire that close to you I'd put four upright sticks in front of it in case a log rolls off and into the sleeping area. I'm paranoid though :-)

Enjoyed Your video you can make a knife sheath from the same cardboard it came in and duck tape and string for a neck shelth. it takes 5 mins and you dont dull the knife making it out of wood
Thank you! Yes, but I wanted to show the capabilities of the knife and how it was able to bushcraft a sheath. Duck tape and cardboard would have been easy, but not as permanent and also I was out for a solid 24 hours with nothing else to do. In a survival situation, keeping yourself busy is very important. Even though it wasn't a real survival situation, it still served the purpose of showing what a person could do if they had to and only had access to dollar store items. I love that you both didn't ask us to subscribe at the beginning of the video and brought in making basic tools, like the hammer and wedge. Can you survive 24 hours with this other stuff? Yes. But can you assure safety or rescue after 24 hours? Having made some basic tools, you already have knowledge and tools incase it takes longer and can apply that thinking to gain self sufficiency and self sustainment.
I ate many a can of cold beanie weenies and chefboyardee. I didn't want to bother getting up and going to the convenience store, 1/4 mile away, to use their microwave. Many other times, it was a sanedwich, or powdered milk, dried froui, Stevia and raisin bran cereal. The college library building had a staff room that had a frig and a nuke oven, I used that a lot. I used pee jars and kept a litter pan, litter, plastic bags, but only needed it 5x in 3 years.
Do u have a white dog ?? Cuz seen one in back ground ..luv learning yet that's what got me hooked in knowing different things ..wow the knife I cut the skin off my finger from cutting a watermelon .. took months to get skin back ... Lol ...... Luv learning thank you ...

You did quite a bit of work making the backpack and all. I guess it shows how much you can do with some of those cheaper items, but if it was me, I would have just made a hobo bindle to carry the gear and made a simple sheath from 2 halves of a smaller stick and the duct tape. It would save the knife from getting too dull, so you could get more use out of it. Good video, James.
I've watched a lot of people take this challenge and seen some great ideas and some dismal failures. The failures always come from trying to use the tools as something they are not. Then they break and are accused of being no good because they were only a dollar. I liked your choices and the way you used them. I also liked that you made chop sticks. I always wonder about that when I see people carving spoons and forks. Our Dollar tree always has a variety of LED flashlights with batteries that are really good but the Dollar stores are all different. I really think the challenge wold be better if the ten dollers were taken to the local good will or even yard sales. The kits would all be different and the choices would be fascinating, though lighter or matches would probably have to be allowed as a given since they would be hard to find at a good will.

I know I take my canine with me everywhere possible. If a significant other isn't available, we could use our furry friend. Learned years ago that's where the saying 2 or 3 dog night came from. I just ran across your video and enjoyed it. Learned a few new bushcrafting ideas. I'm a newbie bushcrafter, so I'm soaking up a lot of info I'm finding on TH-cam. In an actual survival emergency there's a few things I think I would have done differently, but your ideas worked out just fine. One thing I might add, Top Ramen can be eaten dry. Crush it up in the package first, then open. Then eat like potato chips. I use to do that for a snack back in college. lol Thanks.

Thank you so much. I was trying to demonstrate the bushcraft uses of even dollar store items. I also wanted to do something different than other channels in this challenge plus, I wanted to save the rest of the duck tape for my shelter. I ended up using every bit of it for the backpack straps and then to tape the garbage bag together. There was only 30 feet of it to begin with.
Since watching this video some time ago I have watched several other $10.00 challenges, I would vote your video in first place as your confidence and bushcraft skills make a daunting task seem fun.

Great video! I would have used the duck tape and made a sheath out of the plastic it came in.
I used all of the duct tape making the straps for the pack and then putting together the shelter at night. Plus, I wanted to demonstrate how you could make a much more durable and safer sheath using wood. Duct tape sheaths are not very safe as the knife can cut through them pretty easily.
Great job. Really makes you think about what items to buy to help you survive for 24 hours.

i enjoyed the video, but spending 24 minutes of a 51 minute video on making a backpack and knife sheath is too much. That leaves 27 minutes to cover finding a place to camp, building your camp, and surviving the night.

Rather then risk breaking your knife splitting wood , could of made sheath with the knifes packing and duck tape .

He's in a lot of my videos, he likes to run around and make secret appearances when I don't notice him, lol.
Your tarp, laid out, then wrapped around all of the other gear, would be the pack, that ties to the frame with a diamond 0 hitch.
The cordage could secure the knife sheath together with 3 or 4 loops. That would save many yards of valuable cordage.

Ten bucks at Dollar Tree can easily score you the finest Chinesium "10 C's of Survival", and I personally dont think you need any food for a 24hour period but its nice to have.
In my opinion that "knife sheath" was a waste of time, energy, and resources when there was cardboard and duct tape right to hand, which have been far less bulky than that chunk of log. O.o
There was no duct tape left. And, I don't like duct tape and cardboard sheaths as they are not durable and can be cut through easily with the sharp blade. Thank you for watching.
@@WayPointSurvival Thank you for the reply. You used duct tape on your shelter after you had made the 'sheath' so you certainly had tape left. And yes cardboard scabbards can be flimsy but it would have certainly lasted for the duration of your outing.
Your log 'sheath' was probably good practice using those tools, and you certainly didn't need those resources for the short duration of your video, however in a longer term scenario I believe a different, less labor and resource intensive, design would be preferred. If not tape and cardboard then perhaps tape n sticks, a section of Reed, fire baked clay, cloth hardened with coal-pitch, etc.
Even though I may disagree a little its still good to see people in the woods. :)
Thanks for responding. I also purposely didn't use the duct tape because after making the backpack straps, I planned ahead and wanted to have enough to use for the garbage bag shelter. There was, after all, only 30 feet of tape if I remember correctly. I used it all up taping the bags together. There wouldn't have been enough for a sheath anyway. Plus, I wanted to show that you could indeed do relatively more intensive bushcraft tasks with the cheap dollar store items.

Loved the video! Very informative and resourceful. When the knife packaging fell apart, I would have just folded the cardboard, snugly, around the blade and sealed the sheath with duct tape. I love your wood sheath idea. Much more sustainable.

So once you have the pack frame made you snug your pack of stuff on kind of like a spider bundling it's food with a line to the frame🙂good idea.
$1 1 gallon jug of water. if not dressed warmly enough, you'll need a box of trash bags. If the local debris is too wet/rotten/absent to use as insulation, youll have to gut one of them big rolls of cardboard behind wally's, big lots, Lowes, etc. an haul off as much cardboard as you can carry. Stuff some bags to put under you and over you. Cut strips of plastic off of the mouths of the bags and twist those strips into cordage. Use pebbles inside of the debris-stuffed bags and slip knots over the pebbles from outside the bags to join 3-4 bags into a layer over you and another layer under you Then combine the layers into a giant "bag" into which you crawl, feet first. If it's raining, youll need a plastic membrane over you Get a "painter's drop cloth" for that chore. Most of them are 9x12 ft in size. Use some more strips from the garbage bags to tie the plastic sheeting to stakes That's all you need for an overnight. $5, not 10. You can buy a package of flour tortillas and mixed PB and jelly with the remaining $5. In today's money, it wouild cost twice as much as it did back then, but $10 would still suffice, You just would not have any food, but that' dosnt matter for a mere overnight, or even an entire weekend.

When i was really poor i would use bread bags or grocery bags like the dollar store bags you have for boot liners to keep my socks dry inside of the boots if I didn't have waterproof boots. It works if your careful, its a life saver.

I don’t think I would have waisted so much time making a backpack just wrap everything in the tarp tape the ends make a long strip to use as a sling then use bark to make the sheath instead of beating up the only knife I had with me I don’t know I’m not a survival expert I’m just saying I don’t think I would’ve done it that way not to mention the possible injuries that could have occurred
In a survival situation, one of your greatest enemies is boredom. Being able to stay busy by making things is very important. If you know what you're doing, there is no real danger of hurting yourself or beating up the knife. It was just fine and useful the way it was. Also, if you've ever carried anything for any distance, you'll know how useful proper backpack straps can be. Thanks for watching and for sharing your opinion!

With a long fire that close to you I'd put four upright sticks in front of it in case a log rolls off and into the sleeping area. I'm paranoid though :-)
Thank you, my friend, glad you liked it. It does really test your ability to make do with less than ideal tools and gear. The area where I was sleeping was very level and I had rocks on the ground to help contain the fire and keep them from rolling too far...hopefully :-)

Thank you! Yes, but I wanted to show the capabilities of the knife and how it was able to bushcraft a sheath. Duck tape and cardboard would have been easy, but not as permanent and also I was out for a solid 24 hours with nothing else to do. In a survival situation, keeping yourself busy is very important. Even though it wasn't a real survival situation, it still served the purpose of showing what a person could do if they had to and only had access to dollar store items. I love that you both didn't ask us to subscribe at the beginning of the video and brought in making basic tools, like the hammer and wedge. Can you survive 24 hours with this other stuff? Yes. But can you assure safety or rescue after 24 hours? Having made some basic tools, you already have knowledge and tools incase it takes longer and can apply that thinking to gain self sufficiency and self sustainment.

I ate many a can of cold beanie weenies and chefboyardee. I didn't want to bother getting up and going to the convenience store, 1/4 mile away, to use their microwave. Many other times, it was a sanedwich, or powdered milk, dried froui, Stevia and raisin bran cereal. The college library building had a staff room that had a frig and a nuke oven, I used that a lot. I used pee jars and kept a litter pan, litter, plastic bags, but only needed it 5x in 3 years.

You did quite a bit of work making the backpack and all. I guess it shows how much you can do with some of those cheaper items, but if it was me, I would have just made a hobo bindle to carry the gear and made a simple sheath from 2 halves of a smaller stick and the duct tape. It would save the knife from getting too dull, so you could get more use out of it. Good video, James.

I've watched a lot of people take this challenge and seen some great ideas and some dismal failures. The failures always come from trying to use the tools as something they are not. Then they break and are accused of being no good because they were only a dollar. I liked your choices and the way you used them. I also liked that you made chop sticks. I always wonder about that when I see people carving spoons and forks. Our Dollar tree always has a variety of LED flashlights with batteries that are really good but the Dollar stores are all different. I really think the challenge wold be better if the ten dollers were taken to the local good will or even yard sales. The kits would all be different and the choices would be fascinating, though lighter or matches would probably have to be allowed as a given since they would be hard to find at a good will.

Then, buy a cheap 6x8 tarp and learn how to make various tarp configurations. I have several on my TH-cam channel if you wish to watch how I build some of them.
