2CV to Croatia: New engine first drive, oil fail...

  • In this video, I get my 2CV back together and go for a lovely 70-mile test drive. Then I discover the oil leak, which is going all over the exhaust and brakes. Lovely!
    Still, this engine seems very sweet, and with a bit more work, will hopefully get us to Croatia for the World Meeting of 2CV Friends! In the next part, I will deal with the oil leak. Need to crack on as the ferry departs on Friday night!

      I agree, otherwise it would have to rely on the valves being closed when the engine stops,
      and how often is that going to happen, i would operate the pressure release button while
      turning engine over, probably a speck of crud from the dry unused for awhile engine.

    All in all Ian i think it's gone pretty well. Such a big risk putting a unknown engine in. With the exception of the oil leak it would seem she's sweet. Certainly a success in my books, could have been a lot worse. Yes, it's a pain stripping her down again to sort it, but other than that she should be good to take you on your travels. And don't forget, you were so lucky that that stud pulling out when it did was a damned good thing, imagine if it had waited another 2 or 3 weeks before deciding to let go! Would have been a massive headache. Good luck with the seal change, fingers crossed all will be well from now on.

    Your plight reminds me of a book I once read years ago. "How to build and race an 850 Mini" In a nutshell the owner took a bog standard 850cc mini and race tuned it. He told us the viewer everything he'd done to achieve this. Needless to say it wasn't plain sailing, even on the eve of his first race he was stripping the engine down in the small hours to overcome yet another problem. You remind me of him. Enjoy that walk, have another cup of tea and go back to it. Refreshed! - We are right behind you in spirit. 5* :-)

    Sorry you are having such a bad time with the 2CV engines, but thank you for a pretty tour of Ceredigion along the way, which brings back happy memories of annual trips for repping work round there back in the 90s. Even earlier than that, your fond recollections of the Vauxhall Corsa as being the car you learnt to drive in and pass your test in, brought equally fond back memories of myself and my first car in 1976, WGO 828G, a peacock blue Vauxhall Viva 1600 ohc, that I learnt to drive in, and passed my test in. Happy days.

      @Chris Stevens I'm really surprised, the 2CV body appears to be vastly simpler in construction than a mini? The chassis looks to be very simple as well, surely no harder to repair than e.g. an old Landy? That said a new reproduction chassis seems pretty inexpensive at ~£750

  • @jbz2079
    @jbz2079 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ian, that compression tester is as much use as men's tits, the gauge is supposed to hold pressure not the engine, there is a leak down test that needs other equipment to perform.
    That replacement engine sounds OK and the compression should sneak back up after a good run and a valve clearance check just incase the valves sink slightly after bedding in.

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the same about valve clearances but they will have to be done anyway as the cylinder head has to come off.

    The plus side is that that it works and pulls well without clouds of smoke so once the leak is sorted it should be good to go. Hard to tell on the video but it actually sounds smoother and better than the old engine - perhaps those upgraded barrels had an issue (too much compression at 180 ? ). We know from Foxanne that you will overcome come what may.

    A possible cause for oil leaks are the oil lines to the heads.

    I'm sorry Mr HubNut but you keep making claims this isn't and engineering channel but to swap over an engine and get out on a test drive inside of 2 days *is engineering* as is the fault diagnosis. I'll concede the 2CV isn't exactly mechanically complex in comparison to 'modern cars' but it's still an engine. I am 72.3334% convinced you're going to make it to Croatia and back with perhaps one or two minor issues but nothing significant which in itself is astonishing given the problems you're encountering and the limited time you have.

    On a positive note it’s best to get these problems out of the way before you go on the long trip to Croatia.

    Good stuff. Top marks with the parking down a hill with your wheels facing the curb. And Housemartin bonus.

    The 1st gen version of the Corsa was a good car , i had a 1.6 Sport it was very fast for the late 90s , i did not like the 2nd gen Corsa , too much like a small van for my liking and the handling was awful this is why the Fiesta in the 00s was the king of the hot hatches ,it just handled way better

    I tought those pushrod tube seals were a serivce item. In Sweden they are refered to as "eye glasses seals"

    I remember Mum and Dad buying me a rubber Dinghy from one of the touristy shops there and me and my dad paddled it around the harbour would've been 1986 that's how long it's been since I've been there. Happy memories.

    The chase makes the catch all that more enjoyable, hopefully. Keep up the good work.

    This makes me appreciate modern cars; today my lovely Skoda Fabia had an MOT and full service at Halfords (probably pointless fuel additive and oil system clean for an additional £30). It has over 130000 miles on the clock, it was made in 2005, it passed with flying colours. I just dropped it off and collected it; all in cost £205. Happy days!😁

    Well apart from making sure you've a strong credit card and a deep supply of Euros, your warning triangle might need pre flight checks. Briggs and Stratton references below took me back to formative years as a development engineer at Westwood Mowers; the guru of the Overhaul Department was seriously looking at putting a souped up B&S 16hp twin into his ailing Fiat 500......Best of French with your continental motoring mission and avoid the no- limits autobahns!

    Its hard to imagine that there is so much difference between 6.2 and 6.50...according to my EX...( key word)...apparently the difference is noticeable...I will take your word for it...maybe 98 octane may make a difference?...cheaper on mainland europe

    I wonder what it would be like to have the original 1300cc engine and transmission on my 66 beetle. Right now, I have a 1600cc with a freeway flyer transmission. For me, going down a few cc’s wouldn’t make a huge difference, but, I also have two more cylinders than you. I hope you’re able to make it without any issues.

    Engine sounds really sweet! Shame about the oil seal although it doesn’t seem it now, at least these problems are showing themselves now before you set off on the weekend. Great entertaining video as always though Ian, you will get there in the end and it will be all worth it! Steve.
