    Ellie: Not bloody likely!

One of my many aircooled vws spat a plug out once, (had the benefit of double the cylinders you have so limping home was possible)
But I helicoiled the plug thread in the head and it was fine. Old alloy heads like to do that.... some race vw engines run helicoils as a matter of prevention rather than repair

Just a non-video-related 'thank you', Ian for your Foxanne tips on painting cars. We had Bodgit & Scarper repair our gates last week - and as I'd guessed, they'd not painted the top edge of the gate - so it was was still bare (rotten) wood. I've a tin ('plastic!') of black 'stone' / masonry paint - so gave the top edge a coat of paint - but I knew it'd still collect water - so I used my 'designed but not tried' method today of super-bodging a paint job on the gate top to cover all the holes etc. that'd collect water and help the rotting process. It goes like this: Apply fresh coat of paint, add strips of newspaper (to cover the holes) paint the newspaper. Add another layer of newspaper and one more coat of paint - so it's a cross-between painting and papier maché. Looks a lot better and is hopefully far more sound !
I then was wrapping up tools and paint etc. and noticed the back panel on the Kangoo with half the black paint peeled off - and there's me with a paint brush containing black paint - so yes - painted the back of the car with it - looks a lot better! So as I say, thanks for the tip Ian !

I don't get the idea of the Knife-Edge instead of just a round pivot pin. I see below that someone has suggested less friction. However, one thing I remember long ago from my aircraft engineering apprenticeship is that friction is independent of surface area. We had to prove this by measuring the force required to drag metal blocks in various configurations across metal plates. It matters not if the block is on its side (big area) or on its end (small area), the force is always the same.

    • @bryanlatimer-davies1222
      @bryanlatimer-davies1222 5 ปีที่แล้ว

To be precise the COEFFICIENT of friction is independent of area you need more effort to overcome the friction of a larger area of contact but when you run the equation the coefficient is the same

Rather bemused by the 2CV suspension linkage. A completely circular pin would work just as well and last a lot longer. I presume its flat sides are to stop the pin rotating - to ensure the movement is on the correct part of the pin. On the whole, I think it makes the torsion bar look like a great idea !

Some days everything goes so badly we feel we shouldn't have gotten out of bed. Seems a box of spare parts and a dedicated tool kit should be tucked away on some cars. In the early 80s my Moskvitch used to eject one of its spark plugs regularly - it would shoot out, hit the inside bonnet and richochet out of the engine bay into the road. I kept a clean spare in the extensive manufacturer supplied tool kit (along with its Communist Haynes-style manual that had instructions on 'how to lay up the car in the event of hostilities') Happy memories of searching for the ejected plug in the road that could then be cleaned up to replace the spare. Mind you, my 2 stroke Suzuki 100cc motorbike back in the 70s even used to melt plugs sometimes, so I'd gotten used to carrying spares years before.

I believe you should actually loosen the manifold bolts before torquing the heads to do it properly. And you should always check valve clearences after torquing them, which you did... a few times.
Maybe grease up the kingpins as well before such a long journey...?

Probably worn threads on the alloy head...wrap the plug thread in silver foil as a temporary measure....every man bag should carry a patch of silver foil...I owned a beetle...same problem 🤗

The Saab, TWC and valve clearance error with Elly, they say bad luck comes in threes, so you should be safe from now on Ian. If you're going to have cars breaking down, it's better that it happens here than when you're in Europe with Elly. I've only ever had a plug blow out once, it really is quite an alarming experience.

I see a helicoil in your future! And 45 degrees in France? Just like home! (Greetings from Australia!)

That SAAB, was it a hose going in the top of the intake manifold? That bugger wouldn't stay in on the SAAB 900 I had.

Yes, though it blew a small pipe off which made the problem worse. It'll all be in the test video.

You can regain your composure by playing Chris Rea's famous song. "Road to Helicoil"

Hi Ian, a "bad dress rehearsal" is needed for a faultless execution of your trip to Croatia.

Hi could be time for a proper engine overhaul on the invacar! That would make an interesting video.

Yeah, wasn't planning to do that until after the National Microcar Rally in September... May have to opt for swapping a head for now.
