    Mafate Speed4s - like a much, much, better SG5 (the tongue just did not work) - these are great shoes, no hot spot until 17-18 miles - then they expand. Grip is nuts. Nice comparative review, Ethan! the Mafate S4s were nuts stable, grippy, great on camber, fantastic on rocks, loose gravel, etc. - Amazingly comfortable. The Mafate S4s and the Novablast 3s are the shoes for me this year (Trail/Road).

    Ethan I thought I was the only one experiencing that inner seam issue with the Mafate. After catching that inner seam a few times, I had to toss them. Could not even use them in the yard because of the paranoia of ripping off a GD toenail. Such a shame because the Mafate was SO comfortable. Just ordered a pair of Zegamas and will give them a try. Thank you for the reviews!

    Great review! It’s great to see two similar shoes on exactly the same trails for the first impressions. Really gives us a good intro to how the shoes perform. Also, thanks for run-hiking (aka riking). It’s a boost of inspiration for those of us who also rike some of the ascents 😊 What’s up with the Hoka uppers this year? Seems like it’s really hard to get a good, consistent fit dialed in. Wrote off the Zegamas before, but now I’m…intrigued?

    Maybe the Mafates call for sizing down a bit? Seems like if the toe is catching on the overlay they might be a bit long.

    Have you considered going half a size down in the Mafate? Could provide a better lockdown and lessen chances of catching the wamp seam.

    Just did a super technical 50k in PA with 7600 feet of vert in my Zegamas. No hot spots, only issue is on technical terrain you can possibly roll your ankle. Rubber seems to be better, but still meh in wet. Great review as always!

    I've beat the heck out of my Zegamas over the past year and they are awesome...looking to replace them this season with another pair and the Caldera 6 from Brooks...used the Zegamas across and back at the Grand Canyon, training outside of Boulder, etc. Lots of variable terrain...after a year they've held up really well, upper and midsole padding and I'm a comparatively big (190ish lbs) runner...they're great...

    This is really a great (and very transparent) format that should be followed by other reviewers of trail shoes. If I am reading a review I would really like to know in what kind of trails and conditions the shoes were tested because trail running means different things to different people around the globe 👍

    I decided to stray away from my usual trail shoe brands and bought a pair of the Zegamas. They are ok. I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for them. Some of the worst hot spots ever for me at long distances. They make great lawn mowing shoes.

    Just picked these up, mainly from your recommendation- only one test run but a fun shoe … mainly use Altra so quite a change but luckily the 4mm drop isn’t too aggressive and the toe box is accommodating. It’s like the wild horse juiced up!

    The Nike Zegamas are excellent! They are incredibly comfortable, and nothing rivals the style of nike. The one concern I have is NOT stability, as one may think upon initial view of the shoes stack - they are very stable - but durability: All that foam cushioning is easy to shred up on technical trails.

    I actually ripped one of the eyelets having to retighten my mafate 4s. Luckily it hasnt hindered the lockdown much at all so im still putting miles on them. I absolutely love everything about that shoe except the price😬.

      Unfortunately no. Hoka's return policy is pretty terrible if you didnt buy directly from them. i bought from my local running shop which only has a 30 day return. But like i said, it hasnt hindered the lockdown much at all and im still loving the shoe! Great shoe for the trails here in asheville.

    As soon as it's wet, you won't lean to the Nike any longer...the MS4 shines on more rocky, technical terrain with lots of downhills, on runnable stuff in dry there are of course better suited shoes, but who wants encounter rain on alpine terrain at >2000m in a Nike Trail shoe ?

    I’ve been a long time fan of the Terra Kiger and Wildhorse for years now. They are pretty much my regular rotation. The grip sucks but they fit my feet so well that I keep coming back. I got the Zegamas in August and am totally bummed that I get blisters in them on the medial side of my big toe and the ball of my feet. I was hoping to use them for a 100k in the spring but I don’t know now. Maybe I need to size up or go elsewhere.

    Janji vent shorts? Love the first version length and pockets but the tie down is terrible and they ruined the next version by adding the liner and making them longer.
    When’s the summer (fall) shorts showdown coming?

  • @mjcau
    @mjcau ปีที่แล้ว

    I quite like my MS4, but they are still not super-stable on uneven terrain - I guess that's a somewhat unavoidable trade-off of so much stack in a trail shoe. Otherwise it is a pleasant, grippy, trail shoe that goes long well - slightly tight in the toe box, but nothing a little lube can't fix.

    Question: Is the fit of the Mafate similar to the Stinson? The toebox looks similar from the top. I tried the Speedgoat5, but the Elfin pointy shaped toe doesn't work with my foot, Challenger seems the same.

    j ai pu faire 40 miles avant d aller tester lesz egama sur l endurance trail des templiers a millau en france ce vendredi , il avait beaucoup plu la nuit d avant , et comme avec toutes mes nike TK 7 et 8 que j adores , j etais un peu inquiet de saqvoir si ca allait glisser . Alors je peus dire une chose , les zegama sont les chaussures de trail les plus comfortable que j ai pu avoir , et elles se boniffient vraiment au bout 60 miles , elle deviennent plus stable encore , plus comfortable , et le dynamisme reste toujours tres bon , quand a l accroche sur sol humide et roche humide , il est certe pas aussi bon que du vibram , mais autours de moi des concurrents en mafate speed 4 et speedgoat 5 ont tout autant glissé , et sont meme tombé .....donc ces zegama sont pour moi pas aussi catastrophique que ce que certains pourraient laissé entendre , un peu comme les terra kiger 7 , pas les meilleurs sur ro$che humide , mais pas les moins bonne non plus , et comme pour les terra kiger 7 , je suis tellement bien dedans , que je suis pret a pardonner qu elles ne soient pas parfaite sur roche humide , dailleur les zegama et terra kiger 7 et 8 sont devenuent mes seul chaussures de trail , j ai mis a la cave , tout le reste , c est a dire mafate speed , speedgoat , broots catamount , altra olympus , asics trabucco max etc...........je n ais qu une chose a dire , merci NIKE , et comme toujours vous etes aussi les champions du look , et ca ca compte aussi beaucoup .une derniere chose , je trouves que le pied est vraiment tres bien maintenue grace au laçage , et le col derriere la cheville est quelque chose dont j aurais du mal a me passer a present tellement c est comfortable , et le fait que l arriere du talon soit semi souple participe grandement au confort , tres important pour ceux qui ont le tendon d achille fragile

      from translator :
      I did not appreciate at all my first outing of 10 miles in my zegama ...... As a result, I had decided not to run with . Then I still inssisted with another pair of socks, Nike .... And it was greatly improved, then I put 40 miles more in these shoes, and I find them extraordinary, very very comfortable, the best to date, very stable, much more dynamic than what I could have as a shoe for the long, ie Altra Olympus, Mafate Speed 2, Speedgoat 4 , Caldera 5 , Saucony XODIS Ultra ........ I do not regret having grown with this model.

    Can These be used on Pavement too? since a little part of my route consists of concrete pavement and then an offroad trail. How's the Durability on each of these? Especially the durability of the outsole.

    • @TheGingerRunner
      @TheGingerRunner  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean, sure. I'd say they both would be equally odd feeling on pavement (compared to road or hybrid shoes) with their big lugs. But the Nike probably a bit better on that front.
