    Saturn has one massive advantage that the PS1 doesn't here: it can render the ground using a background layer, almost identically to the Mode 7 3D ground effect in SNES games like F-Zero. The ground is practically free, so the Saturn VDP1 is barely drawing anything. A few rocks and trees, a few sprites for the characters.
    PS1 has to tile a bunch of polygons to make the ground (and possibly the background, but I dunno about that). It's actually drawing a fair bit each frame.
    Saturn version does some weirdness with the draw distance though, it should be able to draw further out.
    It's probably because they aren't scaling the far background like on the PS1 version (and the ground is being drawn by the background chip, so it has to split between where the ground and background are on screen, and ends up just cutting the draw distance there), but that's strictly guesswork.
    That framerate gap is wild, and if the PS1 version drew less ground, it'd probably be able to keep up, there isn't that much drawing related other than that to tax the machine like that unless it's just a poor port, but it doesn't look like one.

      The PS1 version slows down drastically when it’s more than 1v1. Barely holding 25fps. Your research is why the Saturn version holds strong even in full 3v3

    • @retroboy-fh1ji
      @retroboy-fh1ji 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      null1023 haha PSX weaker hardware can't handle properly a 2 CPU's Sega Saturn 2D/3D game, nothing new here. If you port games like Sonic R, Radiant Silvergun or Panzer Dragoon Saga to the PlayStation, it couldn't work at more than 3 fps haha.

    • @michaelwilson2891
      @michaelwilson2891 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hit the nail on the head. Two year old reply here but you're spot on. The Saturn's VDP1, which is responsible for 3D polygons and sprites, has only to draw a few items here and there. The ground and background is being handled by VDP2. The Playstation has to even draw the background too, which just eats into the fillrate, though not as much as the ground.

    Yep definately, the Sega Saturn won this round clearly although animation wise via the show intro movies, it does look alittle rougher around the corners though. The Saturn''s superior 2D processing is evident here with the tree, speed, higher sound, frenetic pace and combo count are evident here. Good to see the Saturn prove itself and still one of the most unique DBZ games around even till now! Getting myself the PS1 port because it's easier to find, just happy to own this game regardless!

    Why isn't anyone talking about the auras? They look so much better on the PS.

    • @null1023
      @null1023 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Saturn can't really do transparency properly, and this is an issue pretty much every Saturn game other than Burning Rangers has (which draws to a background layer and blends that on top of everything).
      They really should have made the auras on Saturn in mind with that limitation, they really do look way better on PS1.

    • @raptros
      @raptros 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the auras look better on the saturn tbh, it's not just a sprite hanging behind the character, except your ignoring the glitchy fighting of the psx version it's even missing a proper vanashing animation for the counters, that's just unforgivable.

    • @bizarroeddie1
      @bizarroeddie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      to my eyes they both suck and dont look like they do in the anime at all.
      on the game Shin Butouden for Saturn they are perfect.

    • @stephandolby
      @stephandolby 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, Saturn transparency is very odd. For example, the floating ideya on NiGHTS are transparent over 3D objects but opaque over the background, much like the homing lasers on Panzer Dragoon. The opposite happens with Guardian Heroes, where Nicole's transparent dress "eats" all polygons behind it, leaving a transparent view of the background layer. The ground effects in DBZ are transparent, but eat up the shadow effect (which makes sense, really). Meshes were obviously a way to get round this issue, however they were noticeable at the Saturn's standard resolution (VF2's shadows are meshes but a much higher resolution) which is only partially taken care of by RF/composite which have a less sharp image. Meshes have their own problems as well; it's a free effect used by setting a flag, however the meshed pixels are the same between layers so meshes overlapping meshes will result in the background mesh being eaten (a good time to set one of those to transparent!).
      Burning Rangers is an obvious exception as you pointed out; its transparent polygons get written to the background frame buffer (albeit at half resolution, and resized, to reduce data), meaning that you can still have a transparent GUI on top. However, Burning Rangers, though very playable, suffers from a sub-25 frame rate. The Saturn really is struggling here.
      In titles where lots of transparencies would be needed for water effects, the Saturn should theoretically have a leg-up over the PlayStation - VDP2 can do it in its sleep (though not generally multi-layered transparencies - BR hacks round this), it doesn't cost any polygons, and the draw range is practically unlimited.

    • @Medachod
      @Medachod 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      *+Stephan Dolby* Keio Flying Squadron 2 actually has real transparencies and runs at 60fps. It's truly a technical marvel on the Saturn and it's a sad shame Nocturne in the Moonlight bombed as badly as it did, given that other game existed a few years prior. Truly shameful and reminds you that they did an awful job.

      Don't think it's fanboyism. Personally, I notice the Saturn's superior frame rate (and that's a huge plus). But the PS version has superior detail w/ respect to the charge effects. The Saturn version, as is clear to everyone looking, is very off. Grainy. Transparent. Whereas, the PS version, despite the lower frame rate, produces imagery closer to the anime source material. For me, that's the kicker. PS wins by a mile.

      hmm. Not really 3d. The saturn used quads, but the ps1 used triangles, and while on paper the saturn could do more polygons over all, the triangles were more efficient.
      It's more an issue of the saturn not being developed with 3d in mind until the last moment and sonys 3d functions were better optimized.
      But lets talk about this dbz game here. Saturn has the better graphics for the most part. 99% of the stuff displayed was better.

    The KI aura effect is some crazy good examples of what the Saturn could actually do!

    • @VoiceParodies
      @VoiceParodies 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, it was pretty beefy at 2D graphics but it did suffer with the transparencies. Doesn't matter though, it was equally good on both consoles. I technically prefer the speed of the PlayStation version though (and this comes from a sega fan) because it feels closer to the anime in terms of speed. They're just going far too fast on the saturn, which is awesome, but makes the combo feel like it's ending quicker, taking away from the impact. I love how dynamic the camera is with it's angles on the saturn version, but there's also a lot of unneeded stuff in the graphics too, such as all of those trees lying around on empty fields, but the foreground clouds are nice in the sky. The aura while charging is very awesome in terms of frames as well. The framerate was also slightly higher than the PlayStation version, showing what the eight processors were capable of. It's still amazing to see how the PlayStation held up though, seeing as it only has ONE processor.

      @@wonder-games3579 Nah, not really. It didn't really last long anywhere. They was selling the Sega Dreamcast like hotcakes down in Japan & down in the U.S. it just didn't really last as long due to fact because of the PS2. Soon sony brought out the PlayStation 2 they kicked the Dreamcast straight back to the shelfs & closed them down and had Sega turn into a hardware company. I remember that joint. Even this TV station G4TV was trending about it back 2000 to 2001. it was because the PlayStation 2 had better graphics, better exclusive platforms, & It was the first Console that could ever play Music, Movies, and Games as an all in one as a homing game console. Even the voice acting on PS2 games where actually well done. Also I think that's probably why no Dragon Ball Z games didn't make it to the Sega Dreamcast. The Sega Dreamcast has been rushed, The voice acting was off, and the facial expressions wasn't no good.

    Now this is what I've suspected for quite some time.. Just because the PS1 is more efficient at drawing more triangles and verts in scene, can you see them? If you use The Saturn properly this is what happens on PS1. Games aren't wireframes views ( PS1 would win that ) and complex 3D graphics is not just pumping more polys. The Saturn can do more complex 3D graphics. Just imagine what would happen if it tried to run Panzer dragoon zeiw or Saga or Radient Sivergun ( shudders to think. Thunder force 5 looks way less complex and PS1 had major cuts in that so just imagine RS got ported. How bad would it be vs Saturn original? ) I knew PS1 couldn't handle VDP2 3D infinite poly planes and now I can see the results. The PS1 literally ate through its polygon engine peak performance to render it and there's still loads of cuts= No rotation background, low res ground with warping, no perspective correct textures, no trees, no moving clouds and the framerate still tanks hard.

      No it wasn't. Not with the delay in button input. Also, the Playstation version gives you way more space to move around when playing 1 player vs 1 player. In the Saturn version, 1 player vs 1 player gives you the same tiny playing field as 2+ vs 2+. It looks and sounds better, and that is it.

    • @BallisticFaceGuy
      @BallisticFaceGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@palehorse720 I'd say if the game can't even handle basic input, that's too big of a detractor to even qualify as being better. Or even if it was a very small difference, that would maybe be enough to take the top spot. The controls are so delayed, though. I wish that they would re-release the game with the quick responsiveness and larger multiplayer play field from the PS and the graphics/sound from the Saturn version, because it would be the ultimate DBZ game in my opinion. Edit: I agree fully that the super moves LOOK way better on Saturn, but those are cutscenes, and the controls are too hampered in my opinion.

I just might not be used to it, but it was way more difficult to perform the connect combos on the Saturn version. Another big difference i noticed was when performing the connect combos while having the aura. In the Saturn version, the character loses energy. In the Playstation version, the character maintains their energy while performing the connect combos with the aura. Either way, this game was and is still fun.
