      yes, but music theory allows you to learn how to play more chords and patterns, scales, all that, so you can express yourself more. as others have said, most guitarists just learn the C A G E chord patterns and move them around the neck. there's always more to learn on instruments

    One of my favorite open voicings is this Emaj9 that I kind of discovered for myself while trying to replicate the chords from Radiohead's Idioteque on a guitar.
    From low E to high E, it goes: 0-11-x-11-x-11
    It has this awesome, mystical feeling to it, which is probably enhanced a bit by the fact that it's missing the 5th (optional for jazz chords, afaik).
    You can also do a really eerie Emin9(maj7) by lowering the III: 0-10-x-11-x-11
    Try it!

    • @leone4310
      @leone4310 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is not an Emaj9 tho, you play E-G#-A#-D# no nine in there.

    • @MinimalEncourager
      @MinimalEncourager 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Building upon your chord... try this! Barre the first 5 frets with your index finger so you can play this: 0 - 11 - 13 - 11 - 12 - 11 !

    • @MinimalEncourager
      @MinimalEncourager 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leone4310 The notes of his chord are E G# x F# x D# . It's an Emaj9. Jazz musicians often leave out the fifth (B).

Well after about 3 months of trying, I can BS my way through most solos thanks to endless backing tracks for practice. I love open chords. I try to use them as much as I can esp the add9, 6th, maj7 and a few 11th and 13ths - it just adds so much character and can breathe real life into a song that just isn’t quite ‘there’ with standard chords.

    I love how joyful you are in this video! I’ve been playing like this for a really long time, especially the technique of playing the third on the next string an octave higher and the fifth to frets lower on the string after that, found it on my own and found it was such a beautiful sound without ever knowing it was an open voicing. I love these videos of yours because they broaden my understanding of my own playing and help me see the next step to take in order to keep on learning. Also I love your voice, it’s so smooth!
