Jared thank you for the chord chart. I'm an older new guitar player. The other day, a buddy and I were playing our guitars, learning to play with each other and he asked, "How come our sound together doesn't sound so good?" He was correct. We sounded awful. This video identified that we were playing the same chords. I know now, that's not going to work. Thank you very much for this lesson.
This is my favorite video you have up! Thanks for creating this. Can you dive deeper into this topic and cover other kinds of chord inversions. Thanks again!
Damn now I KNOW why they made me learn all the chord degrees and how to identify them also why they made me learn about voice leading. This just connected some concepts I never even knew were useful Good job
Hey Jared! First of all thank you very much. I’m an advanced player but always learn something new on your videos! You talked about making a video about which chords would lead to which other chord. Did you do it already? I’m so happy to finally found somebody who could explain that to me, always asked myself that. Cheers from Germany! Danny
Jared, this is another great tutorial. The animated movements as you shift the roots and intervals in real-time is a great system for chord building. Even better is that you also include unplayable chords AND add in the way these resolve to each other. All that ear and hands-on “theory” is a great way to really build upon the basic voicings we all learn. Having learned theory much later in my musical life, it’s amazing to see a teacher like yourself putting this instruction together.
Yeah at this point I've figure out almost every closed voicing that's possible to play, except for on the string set (D,G,B). That said add string skipping and you get some cool sounds but studying it becomes a doozy lol. That said it's worth it because many of my favorite chords do skip strings. It's something I associate with my sound.
Hello i had a question , On the "Chords with color" pdf, i was trying to play chords but i was not able it does not say in what fret u have to play that chord.. im new with this so if someone helps me i will appreciate it very much, Thanks
Hi, this was clearly one of the most understandable videos that I've seen, but still a bit quick for me. Is there a couple or more vids prior to this I could watch to get me more familiar with the notes on the fretboard, ta
Hi Rob, Glad you liked it! Yeah, no problem, this is part of series, if you start at the beginning of the series you'll get a ton of info filled in step-by-step :). here's a link to the full series: th-cam.com/play/PLho65cYn4nF1FXo8IWbKUb9_k0pMhgbtr.html. ~~ cheers! Jared
Some of these are too difficult for what I can do realistically now but I’m gong to get through all 27 then focus on the ones I can do the most with and build up.
Great, I love this. One thing could be explained....you kept saying things like "and this voicing would naturally lead to this which would then resolve to this". I guess what you are getting at, is the ii V I progression e.g. Dm7 to G7 to C. But if you could add a few words on this, it would certainly help me, and hopefully others. Thanks again.
Amazing Jared, Its actually Philip here from your email listing but this is my YT user name. Great lesson as always. Need to go over it a couple of times what with my 4ths tuning and all but I will get there. It is so inspiring because you are a great teacher. Thanks again G. 🎸🎸🎶🎶🎸🎸🎶🎶
7:28 is D..... I got confused thinking he meant A as the leading first chord. A is obviously the inversion and then Bminor. My 2 cents if someone was wondering.
Thanks! I'm using an SM81 mic a couple feet away angled up. It's what's capturing my voice too. Then I have the guitar plugged in DI just to add a tiny bit of reverb to guitar but not my voice. You can see the tip of the mic at the bottom of the frame
Great Lesson , good explanation… one question, what's the easy way of finding out the root if we come across the inverted chord… how to know what chord it is, since the root is not the base?
Inversion mean you inverted the basic chords of a certain chords major or minor chords.. Example of 1-3-5=major chords,, 3-5-1=major chords also,, 5-1-3=major chords also. 1-3-5= example of C key center.. C=1-3-5...E/C=3-5-1...G/C=5-1-3..if you added the 7th note intetvals of the C major scale? 5-1-3-7=CM7 chords still but the chords name now is G/CM7 . (5-1-3-7=G/CM7)
Thanks! I rode it in this video because people kept requesting it since it was sitting behind me in all my videos: th-cam.com/video/pe6Yr3lFgio/w-d-xo.html
Great review. Wish I’d know all this years ago. Something I haven’t explored though is third inversion major seven chords. Is that not really a thing that’s done?
It's totally a thing that's done! Here's a lesson I did on how the Beatles used it on the song In My Life: th-cam.com/video/jK0IlXkWnsI/w-d-xo.html. Also the first chord of Aguas de Marco uses it. And many other places including Bach. Glad you liked the chord options lesson. Cheers! -Jared
@@soundguitar I appreciate it but that was an dominant seven chord. On the other hand, I can’t think of a time anyone has used a third inversion major seven chord, but the chord never occurred to me until this video. Would that just be a useless chord rooted on the major seventh degree?
@@Meshuggapeth Oh I'm so sorry! I misread your comment and didn't catch that you specifically said Major 7. My apologies! Major 7 third inversion is certainly also used, but definitely less often. A great example of using it would be resolving major 7 down a half-step, which is a common substitution for a resolution especially in jazz harmony. for example, Cmaj7/B resolving to B maj. Just one example. Another more common way to use it is if the bass is moving down melodically. So if you're playing C major, then Cmaj7/B, then C7/Bb, then F/A. Or the third chord could have just gone to Amin7. That type of motion is probably the most common usage. And in general any weird inversion will sound totally reasonable if it's a part of motion and voice leading happening. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for clarifying after I misread that.
Yep I have a few. Check out my chord melody playlist and see if anything in there is what you're looking for: th-cam.com/play/PLho65cYn4nF229QsNwRGzRq2bWQL__c-L.html Especially this video: th-cam.com/video/z-8fDDd9UJA/w-d-xo.html And then my songwriting playlist might have something in it that helps in that area as well: th-cam.com/play/PLho65cYn4nF0oHnu1_L8OAaXcfBcr-WzP.html
7:17 What do you mean it doesnt have any open notes? I'm literally seeing you only mention three notes but if you only play those three then you still get an open G on the 4th string. Unless you're pressing down on it without mentioning it in the video there are definitely open notes and if they only play what you said they'll get a huge dissonant chord

Great Lesson , good explanation… one question, what's the easy way of finding out the root if we come across the inverted chord… how to know what chord it is, since the root is not the base?
Good question. The best way is to count with the major scale off of each each note, looking for the chord notes to add up to 1 3 5 or 1 3 5 and 7.
