And how... it's as if they were penned by two different people. I suspect a Harvey Dent-inspired event occurred in his life. Come to think of it, 9/11 happened and then there was a clear shift in his writing, so that may have been the proverbial acid-to-the-face.
Actually, Gordon's kids were always explained. In pre-crisis n pre-zero hour Barbara came later, but older, either because of her being adopted, or because of Gordon being divorced n having kids before. After Flashpoint Barbara always was there, way before Jim Jr. P.S. Video is ****ing great.
Does anyone else think that DC really dropped the ball by not continuing forward with the drolly sarcastic Alfred that Miller used in Year One (& DKR)?
A great video for a great book! There's quite a lot packed into such a short story (almost a quarter of which, as you point out, is one single warehouse sequence). It's also terrific how much that first page sets up for us, story and character-wise, and it's perhaps my favourite first page of all. Good job guys, and I look forward to the rest of Batyear!
Fantastic, guys! A great video with great commentary, and as always you have great chemistry! My favorite pairing on Batman is Snyder and Capullo. Keep up the good works!
Thanks Zander! Snyder and Capullo are a Bat-dream-team. We did an episode on their run way back on our first season, but wouldn't mind revisiting them down the road, to give a little more insight on the latter half of their Bat-tenure.
Great video guys! One observation, though. Barbara Gordon was originally created as the daughter of Commissioner Gordon. This origin, however, was altered after crisis in the infinite earths. In the new continuity, Barbara happened to be the daughter of Roger and thelma Gordon and niece of Jim Gordon. When her parents died, Barbara, a pre-adolescent, moved from Chicago to Gotham City to live with her Uncle Jim, her aunt Barbara, and their son, James. That is why there is no mention of Barbara in Year One. She only moved in with James Gordon later. It is important to mention, however, that in Batman: Gotham Knigts # 06, Barbara discovered that Jim Gordon had an affair with her mother before she married Roger and so there is a big chance Jim was the biological father of Barbara (although he does not know it).
Year One’s one of the few Miller stories I enjoy, asides from his Daredevil work, The Hard Goodbye, That Yellow Bastard, and The Dark Knight Returns. Whatever happened to him?
i absolutely love Frank Miller's Batman Year One. it's one of my favorite Batman stories. will have to dig it out and give it another read soon! that Batman Incorporated nod from Ryan Winn was brilliant! another one of my faves! actually Grant Morrison's entire Batman run as a whole!! hope to hear more Morrison reviews from you guys in the near future! :)
Barbara wasn't Gordon's blood daughter pre New 52 if I remember well, she was his niece or something close to that which Gordon adopted because her parents died in a crash hence the reason why there's no Barbara in Year One even though she's technically older than James Jr. After New 52 they just went with her being his daughter and James is his second son. Kind of a messy history but what isn't it at this point lol.
Good way to start, #batmilleryeartime beginning with two vids in one vid is a great surprise. About the tree, do you ever think it was rotten inside and that's how he was able to kick it down . . . actually that could be used as a symbol of gotham, wrotten and about to have the sh*t kiccked out of it by a lunatic in a batsuit.
David Patrick you better believe we have a Planetary episode. I think we did it in season 2. th-cam.com/video/uOxU_A8zff8/w-d-xo.html It’s easily one of our top 10 favorite comics. Considering even revisiting it and doing a couple expanded, in-depth episodes on it in the future.
Top tier Batman story. The definitive origin, sorry Snyder. Year One is probably my 2nd favorite of Miller's work behind his run on Daredevil and just ahead of his earlier work on Sin City.
Agreed. Couldn't believe how good it was on this re-visit. I thought for sure Dark Knight Returns was my "definitive" Bat-story... Year One knocked it down a peg in a startling Bat-upset.
15:35 Burnham is doing great work on DIE!DIE!DIE! from Skybound & you guys should check it out (I feel like a broken record having mentioned it during your Invincible weeks) lol -Ryan is an excellent inker!
Yes, more #millertime! Gotta say, I wasn’t thrilled about #batyear (it’s just that a lot of Batman stories have been done to death in comic review videos), but this was really fun. I definitely see Mazzucchelli’s influence on Chris Samnee. I also see his influence a lot on David Aja (am I crazy?) Love them all. You guys are spoiling us with this 2 videos thing this week. Greatly appreciated.
Thanks Lost! I was worried we may lose some non-Batman fans with this chunk, but we aim to make #BATYEAR the event of 2018... so stick with us. It's going to be great. And we're planning on covering a lot of lesser-known Bat titles that everyone can really get behind. As for Aja- you're right on. Another direct influence of Mazzucchelli in our opinion as well. Stay with us old chum...
LostintheSound'16SP don’t be too hard on yourself. Stupid shit becomes much funnier when you hit 30 and you only get to hang out a couple times a month.
As crazy as Miller is nowadays, he had a lot of talent back in the day
And how... it's as if they were penned by two different people. I suspect a Harvey Dent-inspired event occurred in his life. Come to think of it, 9/11 happened and then there was a clear shift in his writing, so that may have been the proverbial acid-to-the-face.
Yeah, I guess that event really affected him mentally, but I have to think he had some minor mental issues before that as well
very excellent Batman-perch, Dave.
What you didn't see was the awkward half-leap off the stool, blinded by the mask and praying that I didn't lurch the stool over and fall on my face.
Awesome suits
I love this book, solid way to kick off the batyear

Well that about clears it up! Thanks Russell- great insight!
yay
Does anyone else think that DC really dropped the ball by not continuing forward with the drolly sarcastic Alfred that Miller used in Year One (& DKR)?
It always seemed to me that this version of Alfred was a direct inspiration for the animated series.

I was expecting this to drop at.....knight.
Shots fired.

That is a brilliant way to look at it, Brick. We're going with that.
3:50 Jean-Claude Van Damme's Kickboxer on that tree!
The uncomfortable parts make-a me laugh!
1:45 for example
Great episode. Really looking forward to the next one though.
I found you guys during the Invincible videos and loved them. I’m going to watch all the previous episodes, is there one about Planetary?

By the way, great video. I can’t wait for more videos. Batyear!!
Dave's batsuit >>>>
lazyrmc I’m now kicking myself for not finding some purple gloves. Hmmm... something to come back to.

Imperius Rex haha, don’t worry. Even if met with reluctancy, I’ll still watch any video you guys put out...well, idk about those skits. (Jk)
LostintheSound'16SP those skits are cinematic ambrosia and you know it.
Imperius Rex my shit mortal tastes must not be able to appreciate their glory
