This is a great watch. I have and had several DS-1 models, it beautifully made, looks and feels much more expensive. Certina is really a great brand offering quality for a good price.
Man, I've handled over 50 watches in recent years. All of them around 1000 usd and under. A few Certinas also... I've just received this watch. It is unbelievable value! Truly impressed! I don't know if can match Rolex quality, but I can bet that it isn't far behind!
I own this watch - It is really stunning in person - and I LOVE sector dials. My only real gripes are: 1. The 21mm lug width 2. The date and text obscure the amazing sectors on the dial.
I bought this same model without certification in 2019. It is perfect regulated to 1 sec a day and can be had around 500 EUR. Perfect also with leather strap.
I just picked up the non COSC version of this watch for $215 from Ashford on Black Friday. Out of the box I was impressed how much better it looks in person. Usually I hate butterfly clasps but since they have smaller links on the bracelet it is easier to get a decent fit. Also very light for a solid steel bracelet. Domed sapphire is great and the blue AR is excellent - can't see the sapphire in direct light but you get a blue hue to the black dial at the right angles. Would be an 11/10 if it had a screw down crown and 20mm lugs.
@@itsgarmadon I got it from watch shop just before Christmas. They had a discount on which dropped the price to £400. Think it was the last one. Jura watches are still selling for £970 last time I looked. Its discontinued now so might be worth giving them a nudge and see what they'll take. Cracking watch and for £400 steal of the century. Absolutely love it.
I received the Certina DS Podium with the same colour dial. I was looking more for an alternative to the Rolex Explorer - a true 'one watch collection' piece with the classic arabics at 3 points of the dial. It runs a standard ETA 2824-2 and at 38mm has a 19mm lug width. *But* I only paid $250USD on the grey market. I'm really happy. It's running at around +7 p/d but I'm OK with that. The overall quality of the entire package is simply ridiculous for the $. And to be honest, I think that the idea that it's difficult to find decent straps for 19 & 21mm straps is a myth. You can find many and varied straps easily.
@@pradyumnajanga I did buy it from JomaShop about a year ago. They have now released a new version, with the 80hr PR movement. But I have seen that for well under $500USD - and recently. It's the Certina DS Podium with 3 dial colours - white, black & grey. It has a sector dial with the outer ring having concentric circles with applied silver tone lumed indicies and silver tone and lume filled arabics at 3, 9 & 12 with a 6 o'clock date. Most of the time they are under $300USD. A great everyday watch! Cheers.
This watch reminds me of the Omega Seamaster Cosmic in aesthetics! I own a Certina DS podium Powermatic 80 and love it, but seeing this one I may have to sell and gun for this one!
Always loved Certina but that model is one that had past me by. Looking too closely at divers I suspect but that has the sports/dress look that really floats my boat. The hunt is on! 😁
Jomashop has 2 models of this watch. I have seen them on some site from Britain too. www.jomashop.com/jomasearch?refinementList%5Bfeatures%5D%5B0%5D=Chronometer&refinementList%5Bmovement%5D%5B0%5D=Automatic&query=certina#
I got this watch last weekend. Pictures don't do it justice. Mine has been running a little slow but looking at the COSC certificate heat could cause that and it has been a bit warm here. Its also my experience that watches do run slightly faster after a month or two of wear so it might level out. I would how ever disagree with you on the generous lume statement. I dont think it has good lume at all.
Maybe an oysterstrap whith straigt endlings like on the Tudor Ranger would work well. Although I like the original one, the middle links are a bit to wide for my taste. My non chronometer DS-1 runs with -2sec to +2sec a day. Great everyday watch, perfect with a leather strap with a suit. The dial of the non chronometer version is matt black.
I just got the non COSC and it's great. Wearing on the bracelet for now but I plan to pick up a vintage leather strap since I don't have any spare 21mms. I've noticed many entry level Swiss watches use odd lug widths. My Victorinox I.N.O.X. Mechanical is also 21 mm (and it stays on the bracelet to counteract the weight of the watch case)
I have both and I would recommend the Certina DS-1 over a SARB033. Both watches run similar in price ($450-$500) but you can find the non-COSC version for $300 . The Certina wears big for a 39mm and the SARB wears small for a 38mm (wears identical to my 36mm Rolex OP). The Certina matches on finishing and has a better bracelet. Certina boasts better power reserve and more lume. I'll give the SARB points for a matching date wheel and better seconds hand.
I purchased this watch on Timepiece.com. It's the strap version, not bracelet but same watch as the video above. It's an authentic site like Jomashop so don't worry. I was very pleased with my purchase. Not sure if they still have stock on this exact model but good luck!
Putting aside all the great specs, the design is spot on! First the case shape draws inspiration from its own vintage watches. Secondly the dial also bears a crosshair which we could also see on the Railmaster later on. The minute track and the numerals somehow gives a sporty look which reminds me of the Carrera Calibre 5. I have to say this watch really packs an awful lot. It's a shame that Certina has discontinued this model.
DS-1 Powermatic 80 does not actually have the Nivachron spring afaik since it uses the 80.111 movement. The DS-1 Big Date however uses the 80.651 movement and has the Nivachron spring.
Yeah, disappointed with the 13mm thickness. Thought it looked slightly slimmer than that. For me the nicest watches are always on the thinner side and just a bit more compact, they just sit on your wrist nicer and are less "flashy".
...And that is precisely what make me love it! I have the same watch, only not chronometer, with Certina dark brown leather strap. I own it for a year and I still enjoy just to look at it! This video showed me how good it looks with metal bracelet as well - can I buy separately this original bracelet?
I have the fortune to have one this one, this is a very beautiful watch, very versatile in any condition, is a time piece to keep for many years
This is a great watch. I have and had several DS-1 models, it beautifully made, looks and feels much more expensive. Certina is really a great brand offering quality for a good price.
Yess I just picked up a similar DS-1 for half the RRP and I really like it! It's my first Certina and I agree with all the positive comments below.
Love mine👍🏻 Can't believe the value for money. Astounding😀

How much did you give for it and where did you buy it (if you don't mind the questions) ?

That is a fine classic looking watch it will never not look good a real all purpose design .
I was about ready to purchase a SARX045...but this has given me some pause.
What did you buy ?
This one is better since it is regulated to chronometer specs
The sarx045/047 is nice too

what's the lug to lug of this watch?
Great watch! Do you know what is the lug to lug measurement?
Great watch, just wish it was 37-39 mm.
I did order it today ;) can not resist, good price for what it stands. Cant wait to have it

I have 4 Certina's and they are amazing. Love it
Great review. No hype and dramatics, just facts and some subjective opinion. Nice watch, the retro styling and sensible dimensions appeal.
COSC certified, anti magnetic, with a stunning dial, if you can get that for £500 that's got to be a bargain.
I pick my one up brand new for £399.75 over a year ago.
Great value for money
Just pulled the trigger on this with black leather strap. @£400 new (after discounts) it was an absolute no-brainer!

How does one remove the case back on these? It doesn't appear to be a screw back or a pop off.

It is C029.408.16.081.00
What s the reference?
(3m.43secs) What does efforletlessly mean? 😉
Lug 2 lug?
Lug to lug is 49,2mm.
21mm lugs is the only thing stopping me from buying one.

Gorgeous but for that horrifically ugly white line going across the dial, what's that all about?
Its called a crosshair dial, one of Certina's most recognizable design language
