      Which model of Chemin do you own? There are so many that we can consider them different watches. I just ordered a skeleton one with 25 jewels which is a newest release not yet advertised nor reviewed on yt. I expect it to be a watch for generations. In the beginning I chose the black one but then I thought that a watch just ought to be shiny so I bought the ivory one.

      Funny you should say that, but my Tissot Gentleman with this movement keeps much better time than my '06 Submariner. The quality overall is very close, and the maintenance costs much less. Tissot are a cracking brand. Just goes to show the level of mark up on the 'prestige' segment.

      Tissot is a part of the ETA group, so every movement of theirs is an iteration of ETA movements. The Powermatic 80 is simply an ETA 2824-2 movement with a few modifications, so that Swatch brands such as Tissot and Certina can use it, but it's basically free to use for anyone in the Swatch group.

      @@TISSOT Hello Tissot team. Thanks for the reply. What about Tissot gentleman lineup? The model name and this "Si" on top of balance wheel suggest use of silicium/silicon spring. Is silicium different than silicon? If yes, I meant Silicium.

    • @TISSOT
      @TISSOT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Roubén,
      The confusion between Silicium and Silicon comes from the fact that Silicium is the French term for Silicon. So it is indeed the same thing but Tissot uses the French term. As for the Gentleman lineup, if "Si" is mentioned, it means that the balance spring (not wheel) in indeed in Silicon.
      Best regards,
      Tissot Team

    • @baze3SC
      @baze3SC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Silicon is completely anti-magnetic whereas Nivachron if I'm not mistaken is an alloy made mostly of titanium. Titanium is only very weakly magnetic. I assume the decision was driven by the need to optimize the production process or maybe it's not possible to source silicon hairsprings in large volumes. A wire-drawn spring costs less to produce compared to silicon which is etched from a wafer. Also, silicon is brittle and not easy to work with. In the end any company must optimize the cost-to-benefit ratio.

    • @roubenkhosrovian
      @roubenkhosrovian ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baze3SC I didn't know each company in Swatch group produces its own silicon stuff (unless they have in-house movements). I thought they are mass produced and delivered to different companies with the movement. Maybe I was wrong. Also didn't know what niva actually is. If it's titanium (mainly) that also makes sense.

    Stay away from 23 jewels powermatic 80. These are 2 jewels at the pallet fork removed to fully use plastic parts.

  • @jallaballa229

    I noticed in the animation that the pallets were jeweld, however in disassemblies I've seen that the escapement is all synthetic/plastic, similar to the sistem51. Are there different versions of the Powermatic 80 or is this animation based on a different movement?

    • @gearbox3773

      the escapement isn't plastic but composite. Less friction.

      The silicon balance version uses metal escapment gears hence the extra 2 jewels over the synthetic espcapement version! 23 vs 25

    1:41 - does it matter which way the rotor turns or does it tighten the mainspring in either direction?

    • @larsmarz3584
      @larsmarz3584 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked myself the same thing... I could imagine
      (1.) that there is a mechanism preventing the rotor from turning in the wrong direction, releasing tension of the mainspring or
      (2.) a mechanism which allows the rotor to turn in the wrong direction but without influencing the mainspring (i.e. a gearwheel with skewed teeth)

      For older watches from the mid 1900s they would wind in 1 direction. Newer watches now have a pretty neat mechanism that allows for winding in either direction

    are cosc certified PM80 equipped with plastic escapewheel and palletfork or metallic as in 2824?
    The only downside of PM80 (non-cosc) are crucial parts like escape wheel and pallet fork are made out of *PLASTIC* and that is not at all "High end" nor represents true "swiss made" quality to me....

    I do not understand how watch companies (and the Swiss movement makers), can take in such huge revenues and yet advertise basic stuff like a longer mainspring as some kind of clever success to celebrate. By all means preserve traditional watchmaking skills but please, stop charging us stupid money for basic stuff, it is lazy and greedy.

    I don't know how they do it. I've had a few, they're all late. Only when the main spring is partially tensioned are they punctual. With a very low tension they are late, with "medium" tension they are punctual, with full tension they are also late. Optimum is completely wrong.

    Thank you very much for the video that shows how does mechanical clocks and watches work. In quartz clocks and watches first wheel of the gear train is regulated by peizo electric motor (lavet stepping motor or smooth sweeping motor) that is powered by tuning fork shaped quartz crystal resonator that receives power from 1.5 V battery and vibrates at the frequency of 32,768 Hz and regulates the series of gears that drives the motion work to drive the hands that points seconds, minutes and hours. In mechanical clocks the spring barrel or weight pulley (cable barrel) drives the first wheel of the going train to activate the escapement the pushes the balance wheel or pendulum forward every time it returns backwards and drives the motion work of the clock to make the hands of the clock to point the hours minutes and seconds. This is the main difference between quartz clocks and mechanical clocks. Motion work is direct of the going train in some clocks and motion work is not direct part but connected to going train in some clocks in case of mechanical clocks. In quartz clocks the motion work is almost always direct part of the going train and either the mainspring barrel or weight pulley is not necessary because there is no spring driven oscillator (pendulum nor balance wheel) to drive the gear train. Thus the spring driven oscillator and escapement are replaced by quartz crystal powered peizo electric motor to drive the gear train in quartz clock.
