Beginner's Combat Guide To Yakuza 0

  • I decided to make this video to help newcomers understand the combat better and to let them know what they can do in it. If you're introducing someone to the series with Yakuza 0, then do share this video with them to let them know the basics and how-to of Yakuza 0's combat!
    I apologize for the poor quality of the mic, I was planning to make this video after I get a new mic at the end of this month, but I thought this video had to be done as soon as possible to help newcomers before the release of Yakuza 0.

    One thing people tend to overlook is being drunk. The drunk status makes you fill your heat gauge a lot faster, and also enables certain powerful heat actions which you wouldn't be able to do while sober (you have to learn it from the skill tree first). Carrying a few cheap beer on you is a pretty good idea.

      It is a game (and series in general really) that does VERY little handholding in this regard I think, it just gives you the basic barebones of combat and expects you to master it by the end of it (especially with the final bosses, and especially on higher difficulties, where you have to make use of all of your moves at your disposal).
      I don't think it was until after I finished 0 and moved onto Kiwami 1 that truly started to master the combat in these games, before that I probably wasn't even that good really. Only spamming certain attacks and heat actions most of the time, and then continuously spamming health items...
      I can see why that would indeed be a problem, especially for people (and newcomers especially) who won't even know this, let alone be able to pick up on it, but for me personally that ended up being a huge part of the satisfaction in the combat for me and a huge part of how I fell in love with this series and it's gameplay...

Every time you use a specific heat action it’s damage is lowered to stop you spamming them

    Pro tip: try and unlock the 4th styles early, they are huge buffs to your characters (4th styles as in kiryus dragon of dojima style and majima's mad dog of shimano style) the way you unlock these styles is for kiryu: Beat the finance king in the money island minigame, aka the real estate royale, for majima's style: beat all the five stars in the cabaret club czar minigame
    the reason why these styles are buffs is because they combine all the other styles into one, like kiryu's for example has the speedy of rush, the power of beast, and the durableness of brawler
    and majima's: combines, thug's fast attacks, breaker's combo dancing freakshow moves, and sluggers beatdown strength, its a big buff to get these early in the game, cause if you do you actually can get a good boost on the boss fights you have to have in the end of the game and the most of the other parts of the game, and it can also help you get past street goons, men in black noveau riche and shit, when getting to places when your not kiryu with the money toss, so for the love of god unlike me please get these fucking styles before me I beg of you, I have to do it all and get it again cause I decided to not want to do it

      It sort of is, but not specifically. I absolutely had to make a video to make it clear how much you can do in Yakuza 0's combat. As I mentioned in the video, I found one person on a Yakuza 0 stream saying there should be a countering system. Counters ARE there, Yakuza's combat is deeper than many people may conceive at first glance. Once you get the hang of Yakuza 0's combat and know how much there is to do in it, you will have immense fun with its fighting.
      But then again, I also am trying to help newcomers. Many people seem to be getting into the series with Yakuza 0, so I do hope this video helps them enjoy the combat even more than they do now.

    I really appreciate you making this video. I recently started playing yakuza 0 on pc and I got my ass handed to me by groups. I’m familiar with many action games like dynasty warriors dmc3, and this game is waaaay different. I’ve never seen a game where you can guard while being comboed

But also i know that this guide will help even experienced player to know some basics again in just to make sure he didn't lost any tricks in the sleeve. I'm enjoyed to watch this =) i hope it will help even for Yakuza newcomers)))

    I took the time to read a lot of this in the beginning, but the overload of text information definitely was not as effective as these carefully demonstrated clips! I know this is an old video, but thank you!!
    I also didn't realize the extent of enemy/boss AI, and how they learn through the fight (ie, overusing heat actions, which I totally do...) What a great game :)

    • @hanthonyc
      @hanthonyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention I'm forcing myself to play on normal, even as a beginner, since I'd rather take the time to practice the mastery... It's proven a lot more complex than I anticipated!

    Even though this is will not be my first introduction to the Yakuza series, there are still some things about the controls even I didn't know about, like holding down R2 to cancel all heat moves. But kudos to the video I think it's a great introduction to the game I can't wait to play it. 👍🏾

    Knowing that there are a lot of people struggling with this game's combat system makes me realize how few people play actually complex character action games, which is sad. I always though Yakuza was a pretty comfortable intro into the genre, but it just goes to show how unpopular beat-em-ups are in the west. Hopefully this game sells well enough to get some new fans into the series.

    • @TheExFatal
      @TheExFatal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Action games is my favourite genre (Ninja Gaiden, DMC, Bayo, God Hand, you name it), and still find Yakuza 0 kinda complex. I'm still finding it kind of hard to dodge and block mid-combat.

    • @theDiReW0lf
      @theDiReW0lf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      griffin09 Mashing square, dodge, and block is "complex?"

    • @budlikycz2445
      @budlikycz2445 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      theDiReW0lf in case of yakuza its more complex tham Witcher 3. Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and combat is fucking lame and sucks so much balls it cant even be defended. And now take a look at Yakuza 3 from 2009 there is so much skills you can get which lets do so much in that combat. Even fucking Batman Arkham Asylum has deeper combat then a fucking lame ass witcher 3, skyrim, dragon age, every turn base combat shitfest. The reason is in witcher 3 you press square and triangle usually only square because no one fucking cares about heavy attack in that fucking garbage game and sometimes you press a igni, yarden etc or what ever those shit ares called. On the other hand you have Batman with batarang, batclaw, freeze grenade, gun which disables weapons, explosive gel, finishers, steath and dodges, rolls, you can parry you have diferent takedowns and i could go on and everything can be done in combat. While in witcher 3 you have only square and fucking percentage increase in talents. So fuck of with your attitude of stupid dick and die in a cave :-) no one will miss you :-)

    All these tips are good, They're also all in the in-game Notebook. From the comments here it seems navigating menus is tougher than the combat, though.

  • @rashkavar
    @rashkavar หลายเดือนก่อน

    The grab swap (from front to behind) is really handy for someone like me who's trying out a bunch of different heat actions in Kiwami - a bunch of those require a grab from behind, but the AI's tracking is so good that it's very hard to get a grab at an enemy's back, particularly when you've got a mob to deal with as they can quickly knock you out of heat mode if you're not properly managing them (ie: you're running around like a chicken trying to get behind someone rather than punching 5 people at once)

    I think when I played it at launch I was maybe a bit on the mashing button side of things but not exactly, I was just inputting combos too fast between square and triangle (X and Y on Xbox controller). It was my first Yakuza game as I had been extremely interested from the sidelines for a LONG time, and now I've lived and breathed and watched as Kiryu never killed anyone the whole series. If I knew the combat was more.. deliberate(?), Like.. I'm not sure if I'm right about this but it feels like similar to dark souls (just because it's a familiar example for me), input queueing is a thing. I wasn't AS familiar with beat em up games in general so I kind of assumed it was more about fast, powerful, flashy moves being shown.
    Actually replaying now after getting a better pc and it's weird because I felt like I understood the mechanics better than I did before even though I hadn't learned anything new, it just clicked as if I had knew all along lol
    I

    There's one tip that pretty important that haven't mentioned in this video DON'T repeat the same heat move cause the more time you use the same heat move the less damage it'll deal.
