      On the real, I think part of it is the armor doesn't look consistent with the past games, and I certainly think it looks to cartoony. Also doesn't help when no human bleeds in Halo 5, just makes the armor feel all plasticy when you're shooting someone and all you get is little white explosions like you're shooting a pellet gun

    Halo Reach's armor looked worn and serious, like what you would expect from a hardcore super soldier from 500 years in the future. The story in the older halos were a lot darker and almost real. You knew that humanity was likely at its end and the entire game from the music to the colors let you know that. Halo Reach did an amazing job at what human military personnel might act like in the far future. Then 343 showed up and gave everything a softer edge. I didn't feel the urgency of the situation like I did in the previous games made by bungie.

      Robo Mojo yeah before halo 4 it was blatently obvios and it even said that "yeah were probably going to lose" and in one book it took a fleet of 70+ ships to take out 1 covernet super destroyer and in the prosess they lost 30+ ships
      While in halo 4-5 you dont see that and even the flood seemed less... scary dont get me wrong a spartan infected by the flood is scary but from the current design it doesnt look like the flood it just looks odd out of place in my opinion

      Robo Mojo I completely agree, 343 games don't feel very serious because everything is so glossy instead of battle worn and gritty, like you would expect a super soldier or marine to look. I don't hate 343, but it seems like their trying to turn the games more kid friendly just to get more money

  • @WrathClub
    @WrathClub 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1412

    I'd say it all comes down to simplicity being a virtue of good design. Bungie spartan designs came down to "colored rigid armor pieces" and "sleek black flexible bits" so every armor piece feels bolder. 343 has all these weird speckled armor parts, puffy padded looking areas, the coloring rules or lack thereof are totally inconsistent (like how the upper body undermesh is colored.)
    Now they look sleeker, but something about them makes them look like really decked out paintballers or something. The little extra clunkiness from before made Master Chief look like he was walking around with tank plating on him. When he got out of a warthog or scorpion it was like "ok those are made of the same stuff."

    • @MrDrpoptart
      @MrDrpoptart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I agree with your explanation that simplicity benefits the armor. I feel the rigid design made the spartan armor present more of intimidation. The sense that the spartan has a bold attitude to their appearance. For instance, I felt when they added the "colored hexagonal undermesh" instead of the "sleek black under armor" it made it look too soft, like some weird extended sports bra.
      I know 343's intent was to make the spartans look more super human, almost body builder type that fits with their genetic background lore, but I personally feel it looked best when it was bulkier. I personally favor the plated military style. It indeed fit with not only the vehicles, but it also contrast with the marines, weapons, outposts, etc.
      Btw awesome videos, keep up the good stuff, I hope soon your content expands and you continue to be the drunk father I never had.

    Bungie Halo had a very cool art style, and the best way I can describe it is "military punk" (like how there's cyberpunk, steampunk, diesel punk). 343 halo went full on flashy scifi and the cool militaristic look was lost.

    Reach was always my favorite looking game, because all of the armors looked pleasing on the eyes with its basic shapes and strong lines/borders It looked like something that was able to be manufactured on a large scale, the armor looked like something that you would see in 2552. Everything was dirty and worn like its been in use for awhile and seen combat.
    Also on top of that, bungie has environmental design nailed down, even in destiny all of their levels just look amazing, and are coherent and easily identifiable. character/world design is something bungie does very well.

      yeah. It had really memorable ones, that did have great details, like for example the EVA-Helmet with the face etched into it's visor. They did have details, but not too much. They didn't have 1000 little edges you could look at that made you lose your focus. It was a helmet. A helmet with a face on it. And that was it. Not a million sensors, not antennas, bulky speakers, a visor, a face, a bear to the face consisting of more faces, that got so detailed that you just didn't see a thing anymore.
      They were memorable, unique, and yet not too flashy. Halo: Reach nailed Armor Design perfectly. It also gave you a good variety without getting overwhelming. Like, have you ever taken a look into the armor category of Halo 5? All i see there is a huge gray wall of hundreds of armors. Way too many to ever even look at all of them, find any favorites or the like. It's just way,too,much.

    I feel like they tried too hard to make it look more advanced. There's this idea that the more detail something has, the more futuristic and advanced it'll appear to be. Not necessarily the case. Sometimes the most simplistic looking things possess the highest capability and is in fact the most advanced in comparison.

      Yeah, when I see overly complex looking suits I think of it as like it not being efficient and properly built yet but still advanced. The more basic and sleek the suit looks the more advanced it is because you know the technology has progressed enough where all of that complex tech can basically be hidden under a very basic looking outfit. Instead of having random bits of wiring and lights etc going all along the suit like some prototype

    I think calling it "cartoony" is a perfectly viable criticism. As you stated, the armor being portrayed in bright, homogeneous colors that starkly stand out against all backgrounds they're in is a visual effect you can effortlessly correlate to a cartoon with their bright, shiny colors. This is made worse by the needless (and in my opinion) gaudy designs and patterns available. Yellow tiger stripes on bright blue armor doesn't seem like something I can take seriously on a supposed super soldier. Contrast this to Halo Reach's designs which are not only more muted color-wise, but actually have weathering to give it a rugged aesthetic. This, to me, makes the armor believably look like actual armor. In terms of design against older versions, Spartans don't have the armor diaper H3's had and the shoulders/knees/elbows are open enough to allow relatively flexible movement without sacrificing full coverage elsewhere. Idk, I'm biased towards Reach, but I think that was the best looking armor in the series.

    • @skypris974
      @skypris974 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm gonna be "that guy" and state that your comment kinda proves what he's saying while being a little contradictory.
      "It's cartoony" is a valid criticism, yes. However, it's a poor reason to toss up. You yourself elaborated on the reason -why- you say it looks cartoony, further adding clarification to an otherwise unknowable description. What about it is cartoony? You clarified. That's what is wanted. Have a conversation. Don't just throw up a one word description and expect people to get your argument.
      Example? Cool kid lingo. Apparently saying something is "booty" is like saying something sucks, is unpleasant, etc. Going to a forum and just saying "that's booty" isn't gonna make sense to those who don't connect your word usage with its intended meaning, hence an elaboration to help portray what it is you want to convey. Cartoony? "But it's in 3D, not 2D."
      "But it's a game, not a show."
      "There's no outlining though."
      Clarification and elaboration tells us what parts of the "cartoony" description you are using for your argument therefore reducing pointless, ill-nformed rebuttals.
      All this aside, I do like your description and think it works well as a condensed version of the video I watched. I agree with you whole heatedly.

      I think the color issue is that it isn't a military color style. The overly saturated color fits more in line with a sports team. Which makes sense because 343 was focusing more on the e-sports aspects of Halo, rather than its aesthetic or story.

    I think the problem is that the art style and color palette really ruin the armor sets. Look at Reach. The armor LOOKS more detailed while still seeming like it makes plausible sense for a person to wear, but in reality Halo 5's has more detail but just has really bad color design. Another thing is that you said the armor looks more plausible. I somewhat agree, but you took the most basic changes in the armor and said "it looks more believable" without looking at the crazy halo armor sets there are that are totally impractical and ugly and unneeded. Sometimes it makes sense, but it usually doesn't.

      Reach had decent armor design, in keeping with lore. Elites are meant to have ornamental headgear because of their culture and religious affiliation. H4 went off the deep end when they tried applying the same concept to the UNSC and spartans. The UNSC is utilitarian, so everything should be practical and compact. Don't start giving spartans horns because you have a unicorn fetish or something.

    Halo Reach had a better variety of more memorable armor pieces.They also had a bunch of accessories that weren't just yet another generic piece of armor plating. Emile's grenade belts, Jun's sniper bullet shoulders and his wannabe gilly suit scarf on his chest piece. George's front chest piece had like a reactor or something. Then they had all the little nick knacks like the wrist accessories, thigh pouches, customizable visor details ranging from adding an antenna to changing the base design of the helmet (IE the chin guard from the EOD helmet). All these details helped giving character to each and every pieces, which the Halo 4-5 armors are kinda lacking. You didn't need crazy patterns like polka dots and lightning bolts to make your armor stand out. Every pieces of armor only had the base and trim colors (some pieces the trim color was dominating the base color) and you could "make" your own color patterns that way, and it was good enough IMO.

      see, the problem with halo 5 is it tries to look so cool it get ridiculous. like in halo reach, everything on a helmet has a purpose. EOD has a small face plate because the helmet is designed for bomb removal, and you don't want the faceplate to shatter. it has channels in the side to direct the pressure wave so it doesn't blow your head off. in halo 5 your like: why does it have a horn and a bunch of knobs on it?

    I never really saw the Spartans as fast moving ninjas. For me, they're brutish tanks on legs. The way that the old-school armor was so clunky and not exactly user friendly brought out that vulnerability to me. Like how Darth Vader supposedly can barely move in his suit. He's intimating as hell, but under the suit he's completely vulnerable, and it kinda sucks to be him. I get the same vibe from the classic Spartans. I wouldn't want to wear the original armor, but that's the whole appeal to me.

    As a combat veteran I consider HALO: REACH to have had the best example of what MJOLNIR armor should be. It didn't have too much detail, which is the major flaw of the Spartan IV armor. It didn't look too clunky, as all the Chief's armor designs did in the previous games. It even had the option to include functional looking magazine pouches, grenade pouches, equipment pouches, and communication gear. It actually looked like you were a super soldier, not just a Power Ranger knock-off. Also, the color options were toned down so that they didn't have that iconic HALO shine to them, which I think is an improvement. Sure, the shiny armors is iconic for the franchise, but it hardly makes sense. It seems to me that a Spartan would want some color options to distinguish each other on the battlefield, but not so bright that they give themselves away. The shiny armors should be exclusively a Covenant aesthetic, since they're more concerned with direct engagements and ceremony. When HALO4 was announced I became really annoyed with the new armor style because even the Chief got a new look, and it made him appear more like a medieval knight in shining green armor, not a soldier. His shoulder armor even changed from the standard MJOLNIR octagon plates to some kind of large diamond shaped shoulder plates with an almost ceremonial level of detail to their design. It didn't look right, and it didn't look functional.

      um. halo 3 is what brought us together. and to be fair if you watched this video, YOURE a fanboy because no jackass who isnt would bother with this. halo CE started it all. halo 2 revamped that with competitive multiplayer online on an unmatched scale at the time. halo 3 was such a massive event it was more then just a simple game release, leaking into the media and even the god damn super bowl. my opinion, is that halo 3 is the culmination of what a halo game was defined as. it was to finish the fight, and see it through to the end. they waited too long to add on the other games and now halo has basically turned into COD daycare with the fanbase. literally any game I play on halo 5 theres some kid who rage quits, teamkills, or is just straight up afk. not to mention all the people screaming into mics. so yeah Im a fanboy because I miss the old days of when you could grab some chips, sit down on a couch and find a custom game of jenga. not anymore sadly.

      here is my artist eye for halo, humans are portrayed as an inferior, undeveloped, grimy race, by the covenant and fore runners. So i would go for a dull steam punk-esk way trying to put a lot of sloppy bulky technology together, ill make the armor look defeated, beaten like a knight(small but brave figure) that has been fighting a dragon(superior creature to the lonely knight) for hours, thats how i see the harness.

I think halo 3 had the most unique armour compared to the rest. You can obviously tell the difference between the CQB and EOD shoulders whereas in reach and H4 a lot of the shoulders looked similar. The commando and security shoulders were both ua armour pauldrons.

      No, not competent engineers at least. Whichever "engineer" came up with the early MA5-series rifles needs to get fired. And the team of astronautical engineers who designed the UNSC spacecrafts would probably face the capital penalty for criminally incompetent design. The decks aren't even in the correct orientation, for fuck's sake. That alone would certainly and predictably cause thousands of crew deaths.

    the armor is simply overdone. It tries too hard to be sleek that it completely bypasses that this armor is made to compliment an augmented soldier, key term, soldier. Not some super hero or merc, a soldier in a military, and militaries are known for their uniforms. Simply put, the new spartan armor and elite armor does not feel like what a soldier fighting in a war would be, it feels like something you would see in overwatch. it isn't immersive, and feels misplaced in a universe where a religious alien covenant led by false prophets to nearly wiping out the entire universe. As The Act Man stated in his Halo 5 review, the spartans looked insanely stupid doing all that acrobatic shit in the opening cutscene, and the elites were far too clunky. that one bitch who jumped into the phantom? 5 things would have happened were it not for plot armor. A, the grunts would have lit her up with a plasma cannon before she got remotely close, B, The Jackal would have sniped her mid air, C, the shield jackals could have easily just formed a barrier and knocked her out ,D, they would have overwhelmed her, and , E, the elite would have turned her ass into a kebab, just like the zealot did to emile on reach. the new art style is too over the top to feel like they are even soldiers. may as well make them mercs or super heroes as their armor does not reflect any military attire you would have seen in the earlier games.

    In my opinion, I like some of the new armor, but in the end, Reach's still looks the best. Reach's armor and color palette just has that gritty, real look to it that even Halo 2 Anniversary or Halo 3 can't compete against. It just looks perfect. I think there are many reasons why Reach's armor is the best.
    There is a base armor, the Mark V, which you build on. The helmets don't look crazy like the Seeker or Fotus. Then there are armor attachments, and so on. It just feels so much more realistic.
    The armor in multiplayer has those scratches that make it look worn, while in any other Halo game it looks plastic. Halo 2 Anniversary's armor doesn't have any scratches at all. It looks shiny, like it just came out of a factory.
    The color palette in Reach, which doesn't have any shiny, neon colors like Halo 5 or CE. They feel more dull, adding to the militaristic feel of Reach. The only other Halo game that did this is Halo 4 and Halo 3. The colors aren't shiny, which is better.
    And most importantly putting more detail into the armor while keeping the base designs basic. Reach armor is in my opinion the most memorable in the series, except maybe Halo 3. The MK V B. Jorge's bulky armor. Emiles helmet. They're all memorable, and that's because they have a simple design, with more detail put into it.

    What I don't like about 343I amours:
    They feel over complicated. There is far to many "reskins" (look how many of the helmets resemble EVA for instance). They aren't really unique or interesting, because of how many there are. Adding skins to amour is cool, but stripes, spots, zig-sags etc look terrible, especially when they are put in a colour like white (we also have no control over this colour). We get 3 pieces to customise (not counting colour) which is pretty limiting. Unlocked via RNG so none of them really carry any weight or worth, remember the days of Halo 3 where you'd see someone with Recon and go "Holy shit, that player has recon!" or grinding vidmasters to unlock it yourself? There isn't really battle damage on any of the amour, which adds to the plastic look of it all. Unlocking a piece of amour didn't mean much either, as due to RNG there was no guarantee you'd get what you wanted, and because of the sheer amount it felt like you never really progressed forward in any way.
    What I liked about Bungie amour: It actually looked practical. It looked militaristic. Each set was different to the last, and felt more unique-also wasn't overly crazy amounts, there was enough to satisfy people without going overboard. We had more customisation options, and so could more tailor our Spartan/character. Reach had the best customisation IMO, and also had very gritty, realistic, military styled gear, which not only matched the theme of the game, but also the universe of Halo. Bungie used to give certain amour pieces a challenge to unlock, remember Recon, or Haunted Helmet from Reach? They carried weight and worth. Also, when unlocking new amour, it felt like you actually achieved something.
    Ultimately I prefer Bungie era amour more. 343I just has far to much amour, none of it really carries any weight or worth, much of it are "reskins" (just look how many helmets in Halo 5 look like EVA), it feels plastic, doesn't feel like something the military would use and nor does it feel like you really progress anything when you gain a new piece of amour. It also feels like 343I are trying to cater to those who need tonnes of stuff to unlock. I'd rather have fewer items, to make each more unique, and work my arse off to unlock something, then have a tonne of stuff to unlock, that all kind of blends.

      As neat as your argument is, it's really biased tbh. Reason i say it is, is due to u ONLY describing dislikes with 343i and ONLY likes with Bungie. I may share your same views, but i find it important to present both sides with both pros and cons of each side in an argument.

      I can see how it came across as a little bias. I'm not a bungie-fanboy or a 343I hater, or anything like that. I just feel the amour designs by 343I aren't really all that great. I did honestly try to come up with something I did like about the amour, and I honestly struggled to. I just much prefer Bungies designs. One thing I wish had changed with Bungies amour was in Reach, the ability to choose the attachments of the helmet, rather than presets that were given to us. Care to add/expand on this?

    after I saw this video, I went back and reread the first and second halo books which talks about the designs of the spartan 2 armors. As described, they all looked the same with the same forest green color and style helmet. They had a specific look to them. Every marine that saw them had this sense of fear and awe. they looked like machines. there was a practicality to the reflective green surface like the armor we see MC wearing in all the games. I kinda wish they stuck with that in the story lines. The Mjolnir armor had this specific look. it was designed to intimidate. Even the covenant thought they were, to the point where they called them demons. any time they saw that armor, it was easily recognized and heard. Im sure after a while as technology developed, the other spartan 2's customized their armor, but if they are going to show the past where they all first started? I wish they stuck to them all looking the same. They could barely even tell each other apart except for physical attributes like the body build or hight. I do agree that too much change can hinder the iconic look of halo, but I even felt the same with REACH. They tried too much to personalize the Spartan 2s and 3s (read The Ghosts of Onix book to get the idea of what the Spartan 3s were). I could seriously go on and on about this but hopefully you guys understand what I mean.
    Multiplayer shaders dont bother me as much because it's meant to be fun and personalized to how the player wants to look, but when it comes to the main story line, after halo 3, I felt no sense of consistency with the Spartans. Why in the world would you want to go into battle with this bright blue/red/white/purple/orange armor? Its just not practical and no military operation would think that is tactically smart. The color tones in the original halo 1-3 and to an extent halo 4, all were kinda bland but still had a sense of reality to them. I loved that intimidating factor to this group of seemingly invincible robotic super solders that struck fear in not just the enemies, but to the marines too. I personally like the simplicity of the armor that bungie was trying to achieve.
    Tl;dr I just wish they were more consistent with the armors. Too much diversity to where its hard to tell from marines, ODSTs, and Spartans. Spartans had a look, marines had a look, and ODSTs had a look. If they are going to be described as such, then make them look as such also. Halo is a game of simplicity with an amazingly in-depth story but simple story line.

    When I first saw the armor in H4, I thought, “Cool armor, let’s start playing.” I was pretty young at the time, so I didn’t care.
    Now that I’m older I have come to appreciate the old and the new. I like 1-3, and Reach, and understand the appeal for 4-5. And I agree that Iron man set a new standard for power armor. Sleek, smooth, powerful. People now eat that crap up. And 343 thought that they should follow that trend too.
    And that is where I feel like they forgot about their roots.
    Now I’m not blaming the artist. 343 probably came to them saying we want to change things, and the artists probably said, “Alright, screw it, your the boss.” They worked with what they had, and they did a damn good job in my opinion.
    But the appeal to Halo, to me, is that it is something you would probably see today. While it is 500 years in the future, the games still have a modern day look in some regards. The guns, armor, ships. They are big, bulky, and most certainly ain’t pretty. But they get the job done.
    That is why I was excited when I saw Chiefs armor in Halo Infinite. It seems 343 is going back to their roots, with the armor being the familiar blocky design, and combining the futuristic sleekness that we would stereotypically see.
    I don’t know what the future holds. But I can appreciate what I got right now.

    Hey LNG! You've done some videos regarding Halo art style, but one topic I think deserves prominence is the forerunners environments. For me this is a major topic, because one of the things that captivated me in the previous games was those strange metallic structures that you came across. They had a very special sense of wonder and discovery, and whenever I entered the dark corridors I felt in an ancient, mysterious and full secrets environment, I never knew what I would find in the next corner. In Halo 5 all this is gone. The forerunners structures are now stupid floating pieces of shiny metal. There is nothing ancient, epic and mysterious about them. Definitely they do not seem to be hundreds of thousands of years old. Even from a gameplay point of view they are boring, since they are just straight coridors with barriers, with stupid robot dogs running around. I think it deserved a whole videos, but if you can, at least read this on a QEA. Thenks for reading, love your videos! (Sorry for any english mistakes, im brazilian :)

    I have to disagree on the black undersuit agruement and "less armor is more mobility", Spartans were meant to be human tanks, disrupting large amounts of enemies while maintaining large amounts of enemy fire. They weren't double jumping and flipping around and seeing how many they could kill mid-air, they were precise and efficient and able to absorb lots of damage if the odds were against them. They couldn't do that without the extra plating, even though it would hinder mobility

    "It's generic" is actually the perfect argument considering the point you made earlier. Iron Man set a trend that everything sci-fi wanted to follow, and guess who also followed that trend? 343 threw away a solid and iconic art style for something everyone else was doing and did nothing new or interesting with it. I'd say that's a good argument for saying H4 - 5 art style is generic. Hopefully they actually pull through with Infinite.

      That‘s a fair point, but I think what he meant wasn‘t so much that „it‘s generic“ isn‘t ever a valid point of criticism, but moreso that it needs context, like you provided with your point, which I‘d agree with.
      In theory, I like the idea that spartans can‘t just take their armor off, it makes it feel like this incredibly intricate and advanced piece of technology, but also makes them vulnerable and more awkward (in a good way)
      BUT, it‘s clear someone saw Ironman and said „Do that“

    Generic is an argument. When I use it, I refer to creators of content following the trends, be those aesthetically and/or commercially, in order to fit in. Whether this happens consciously or not is not always relevant to the product discussed. When I write Music, I'm a Musician, I will compose, arrange and perform my Music based on an inner guiding feeling called inspiration. There's no fitting in because it's not necessary for a great piece of Art.

      I unfortunately don't agree with that. To me H2A had a good general design like he said, but the whole "glow in the dark/plastic look" is worse than ever in that game. It literally looks like a bunch of action figures fighting in a toy box, especially with the admittedly more cartoonish old art style.
      If they could make it look as gritty and well-shaded as H2A campaign, then sure.

    5:43 that’s very incorrect, it’s been proven that plate armor, which covers way more then the spartan armor of old (our favorites) actually allows you to be very flexible, you can even do parkour in it. The new armor seems to add weight to different areas of the body instead of distributing it equally like the old spartan armor, which is better overall.

      Plate armor doesn‘t equate to the old Halo designs. Plate armor allows flexibility because it was specifically and painstakingly designed to do so. The Mjolnir mk6 was designed to look cool, if it would realistically restrict movement, who cares.
      I think it‘s generally better than a lot of fictional armor designs, but especially on the shoulders and the... space diaper, you can see how it would restrict you because remember, there isn‘t just the plates, there‘s a thick undersuit as well that, while flexible, can‘t exactly move out of the way if the chief wants to, say, bend over or reach his arms above his head.

  • @the_real_Kurt_Yarish
    @the_real_Kurt_Yarish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    My problem with the Halo 5 designs is that some elements seem impractical or are downright unrealistic for a person to use. A common argument is that many of the armors look like robots, or something non-human. You just can't imagine a person, even a super advanced one, being able to efficently use these sets. This is especially prevelent in the helmet designs. Also, many of the details and/or design elements of the armours seem to serve no practical purpose. There's no good or obvious reason why some of the armors are shaped the way they are. Contrast that with the designs from Halo Reach, where they give you a short explanation of the armour's purpose, and you can tell visually that "oh, this helmet is designed to protect the neck", or "this helmet has vents on it for filtering air", or "this helmet has a large visor for clear sightlines when piloting". To an extent this was less of a problem in Halo 4, but even then some armour designs made no sense. It seems like they went out of their way to make the armors look "cool" and "futuristic", rather then being practical. The best kind of sci-fi is the one rooted in reality, and that's an element that 343 has neglected in Halo 5.

    343 truly ruined my favorite game series, The art style is not necessarily a huge aspect to me. I can get over that, but the fact that 343 took art over "fun" made me mad.
    Bungie in a video stated that they make sure that "this area has to be 'fun' before pretty" and I respect that SOOO much, 343 took graphics and has no fun.
    Look at battlefront, the game looks amazing, but it gets dull and boring after a while, and that is the same exact thing for halo 5.
    The campaign was completely changed from what bungie envisioned for the chief. 343 was given "The halo bible" a whole book filled with lore til the end, and they declined the book and made up their own story. "Cortana being evil, more spartans." The fact is, Master chief is still floating in space right now, and 4 and 5 were just a dream.

  • @Parker--
    @Parker-- 7 ปีที่แล้ว +158

    -The trend of the armor has nothing to do with Iron Man. If anything, Iron Man has more in common with the Bungie's original designs than with 343's original designs. The actual look of 343's designs have more in common with Transformers and anime inspirations.
    -Mass Effect (2007) came out before Iron Man (2008).

      The biggest differences between '07 and '10 is how much detail the game can resolve. The original is going to have less detail because the game couldn't handle 2010 quality textures. Further, the other only difference is a clear addition of several shaders.

    One of my main problems with the new Spartan 4/Gen 2 Armors are the Shoulders.
    the Mark 4, 5/b, and 6 had full upper arm armor plates with the Shoulder Armor plate attached at the top of the arm. While 343 made the new Shoulder Armors too big and bulky that they lowered them so they don't hit the big bulky torso armor when moving around, and removing the full upper arm armor plates, leaving only the large shoulder with small armor plates in the bicep and triceps area.
    I'm glad that 343 went back to the classic armor designs when creating the Mark 7 for Infinite.

    Another criticism with the armor I've seen that ties into the 'generic' argument is that there are so so many armor sets in the game. When you look at a couple of them, you can see lot of aesthetic similarities. The Mako armor looks a lot like Fenrir armor for example. 343 went with a quantity over quality with the armor sets in 5. Whether that's due to the REQ system or not I'll leave up to everyone else to decide.
    Personally I feel like there should do the inverse approach with the armors in 6. Less armors that have different design philosophies so that they stand out more instead of being just another fly on the wall. That probably why the throwback armors in 5 like Mark IV and Vigilant are so popular.
    Personally I feel like 343 dug themselves a hole in that regard due to the REQ system, but that's just me. There are probably ways around that issue I haven't seen or thought of.

    Time and/or sheer effort expended are not - in any way - a substitute for less aesthetically pleasing art. ALL that matters is the final product. That's the fundamental basis of any art/design. Majority approval is the defining factor, and majority dislike Halo 4 and 5 art style. Case closed.

  • @BrownieJ126
    @BrownieJ126 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    For me, I enjoy both art designs for different reasons, the way Bungie's designs felt real and worked with the gameplay was great, but the way some of 343's armour makes the spartans look like gods to me is cool. What I want is sort of a best of both worlds, and with Halo Wars 2 we could get that, it's old designs in this new more complex world, if you fused them together the art style could be fantastic.
    Also a problem 343 really do have is the logical leaps in law that have to be made as to justify the way certain things look in Halo 4 and 5, the humans and UNSC progressing as they have in 4 years I can buy personally, it may be quite a drastic progression but I can buy it. My problem is mainly with the covenant and Prometheans, how in 4 years did the covenant go from being unique and interesting and very identifiable, to a group of ugly thugs? like the elites in halo 4 with their odd textures and brown designs look so out of place when compared to the halo 1-3 grey elites. I also don't get how the prometheans fit in with the forerunner design, don't get me wrong I like the concept of the prometheans and how they're designed, but they do not fit the classic promethean look, I can't imagine a bunch of soldiers, crawlers and knights hanging around in the map Epitath in halo 3.
    For me the best thing for 343 to do now is find a mix, find a way of fusing the two. They try too hard to make the Spartan IV "cool" when sometimes simplicity is the coolest factor, trust me there's a reason my main armour usage in halo 5 consists of armour that looks like classic halo armour.

    343 has openly admitted that they hired people to work on halo that hated halo, so that they could help change what inherently defines halo.
    This among other factors, did exactly that, which is why people dislike not only the armors, but the entire series past Reach, or even 3 (if they hate reach, then they're giving bungie some flak too).
    I personally hate the new armors because they're supposed to be an upgrade, but in universe it's stated that the requirements to be a spartan have broadened. The standards have lowered, and the jobs of spartans have changed. No longer are they walking tanks that are meant to have a strong punch, and inspire other soldiers. Now they're designed to be sleek, move fast above all else, and just get to the objective. They aren't protectors, they're operatives.
    The armor changed because the spartan program itself changed, and therein lies the problem. The spartans aren't spartans anymore. The exaggeration of detail, the excessive amount of promethean / forerunner influence, and the lack of insight to what makes a spartan truly a spartan was lost or ignored. Yes, the undersuit IS incredibly durable, but it's not designed to take the brunt of incoming assaults, that's what the titanium alloy durasteel is for. The amount of metal in a given armor set has drastically changed, to make the spartans more nimble, as you've stated, BUT at that point, why not just wear the suit and a small shield generator and helmet? If the armor doesn't make them a walking powerhouse that is both fast and indestructible, then they aren't spartans, by definition.
    The old armor was not terribly constricting or limiting. ANY amount of armor will be, but the old armor was not a hindrance, so it was perfectly fine as is.
    The new armor moves the metal to where it doesn't need to be. The shoulder pads aren't even on the shoulders anymore, and they're hilariously thick for protecting JUST the biceps of most spartans. The leg and thigh armor leaves plenty exposed, as do the chest pieces. The power pack the spartans have on their backs are bigger than they were in halo 1, and have what I consider to be obnoxious protrusions near the shoulders and head that just don't contribute to anything. They just exist.
    one could argue that sure, the alternate placement allows for a larger range of movement in the body, specifically the torso. But what about the head and shoulders?
    And the silly little pointy bit on the front of most chest pieces, what the hell is that? In deadspace on Isaac's armor, that actually had a purpose; it projected information and provided a diagetic HUD at times. In halo, it's pointless. It distracts from the rest of the armor, IMO.
    I could go on forever about specific reasons why the armors 343 made are ridiculous, but I don't need to babble on about how 343 made halo unrecognizable and should stop if microsoft would let them. my opinion in a nutshell: all the stuff 343 did would be interesting in any other series, but to mutilate and desecrate halo the way they have is insulting to fans, old and new alike, regardless of age. It's insulting to the original devs and designers at bungie.
    They were so concerned with whether they COULD they didn't stop consider if they SHOULD.

    I like this video a lot, but the thing that you missed is the inconsistency from the end of Halo 4 to the beginning of Halo 4. The MC takes a nap and wakes up 4 years later with everything looking different. There is no intermission where we get this upgrade, like the cut scene in the beginning of Halo 2 where the MC gets his new armor, so that is why he looks different than Halo 1. ALso, don't get the into discussing about nanobots and liquid metal in those armors, it would be vary inefficient for them to be designed in such manners, also they are never mentioned in the lore before the beginning of Halo 4 or 343i explanation on why MC has a different looking armor. Finally, totally agree that the armor design just doesn't fit in Halo.

      Another thing, Bungies designs were much more rougher while 343i is much more oblique, thus it creates this train derailment of what Halo should look like.

      HN I do think that some armors look absolutely amazing like helioskrill and wrath armour but some armors like achilles look like hey just wouldn't protect you from a poke.But I do think that armour from older halos are also terrible like recon from halo 3 also looks like it would give neck protection as it just fits around the heads not near the neck

    • @MrH4RR7
      @MrH4RR7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DUCKATRON _DUCKATRON It is not that the designs are terrible (but the coloring and shading are in many cases). Primarily, the transition from Halo 3 to Halo 4 is terrible. Imagine the Master Chief walking around in his old Halo 3 armor while being surrounded by those Spartan 4 in their New armor, cause 4 years passed and new armors where developed. It will also reinforce that the MC is old and from an older era, while the UNSC has moved on technologically.

    60% of halo 5 armour is shit. 40% is good. But thats what you get when a game has like over 200 sets of armour. Maybe lower the number by only having the fan favorites? Also bring back shoulder pieces, knee pads, and all that stuff like in reach. And make a 3rd person mode so we can actually see our armour in game.

      The reason why i think most of halo 5 armour is bad is because its too... curvy, and new looking. EVA looks so weird now, so many weird round tumour looking helmets and just flat out silly ones.

    10:07, WOW this is EXACTLY what they did with Infinite. After watching this video I agree the armors need less "Iron man" and more "Kojima-esque future military".

    as I game artist I appreciate you sharing your opinions (not at 343). I know the artists at 343 as well as every dev at the company eats sleeps and breaths design, functionality, as well as aesthetic. And I can guarantee they've discussed everything you've mentioned more than a handful of times. That said they might as well be thinking a little too much, maybe it's time to take a step back and refine what's already successful rather than modify it.

      design for the pelican is back and they used the new design for the condor, a pelican like uber unit

    For the most part I like the 343 spartans. They look sleek and a genuine upgrade from the previous Spartan III's. The undersuits especially. It might just be because the technology is better, but they do have more detail and emphasis rather than just a black suit like Bungie's. If they cut the armory in half removing things like seeker, foehammer, legionnaire, recluse, etc... And just kept armor to realistic proportions and visors instead of obviously over dramatic elemnts, they would be great.
    The new Scout looks amazing. The new Recon is beautiful. New EVA is nice aswell. The helljumper that Buck wears and the Copperhead armor Vale uses are seriously great. They look _real._
    Not all of 343's original designs are bad, either. Defender, Enforcer, Argus, and Technician are all some really nice looking armor.
    I think 343's main problem with armor is that they don't limit themselves. They put everything they come up with in the game instead of picking only the really good ones and putting only those in.

      Torva that’s facts, if you don’t like some of the new amours don’t run them but saying all the armors look bad is ridiculous they’re literally the same armors from previous games
