Actual league lore since the olden days of their beta expanded on shit, LOR broadened everything out even more, they have a bunch of forum posts and separate site pages etc with indepth stories etc. It's more than "just piltover and zaun"

I agree. What I like about GW2 is that it's not "forcing" me to play in order to keep up with the content, new gear lvls and other things, therefore not making it a second job of some kind, but WoW generally has better combat roles, PvE content and class design is also done better IMO

Yes with more similarities to GW2, would be ideal. But we the players want to see true innovation and fun gameplay, with awesome Horizontal Progression systems that serve players time excellently. It's a tall ask, and I'm probably not going to see the type of MMO I want to come out (excluding GW2, gw2 is amazing) I'm going to have to develop the team to build it myself, along with my other planned gaming projects.
I have 3 years /played in retail wow, quitting blizzard projects permanently, after having played the entirety of Shadowlands. I will never go back to Horizontal gaming progression. Never again.

The last thing i was hoping to hear was that the league MMO was going to be anything like WoW. As long as the combat isn't a tab target-global cooldown snooze fest and jobs or life skills or whatever they'll be called aren't locked into a "There's 20 of them but you can only ever have 2 active at a time" ordeal, then i'll still be excited.
I think you forgot about FFXIV that is still very popular and took a lot of wow players (including myself) into its friendly grasp :D

I feel like people forget about Black Desert all the time. Saying no mmo has succeeded in a new style is wrong in my opinion when an action combat MMO has been doing well for a good while.
black desert was insanely fun especially the combat. the combat literally has no competition, it was so skillful, that even a mid geared person could stomp a high geared person with enough skill.
Riot mmo:
- better movement than wow (like genshin, or idk)
- better models and graphics than wow
- copium

I really hope you're wrong about this, because we've had WoW clones out the wazoo. If they do orientate themselves after old MMOs, I'd much, much prefer something like GW2. At least in the pvp modes.

According to Addon downloads, modern WoW, Dragonflight, has more players than Classic.

the only thing i hope is that Riot makes a setting where you can play the game like Tera (have a crosshair and use your mouse by holding alt) It felt nicer to me and i didnt have to click on 30 differnt things
Tera was my all time favorite mmo and their combat system felt so good and fun to play so I hope riot pulls from that

Assuming it's still going to actually happen after the cuts, it would have to have been a theme park MMO, you can't really tell a cohesive story with fixed lore in a randomly generated world and the lore is basically all that riot has going for the MMO given you won't be able to play as the heroes anyway because having 50 garens just spinning is dumb
Riot has always been a company that iterates on ideas already in the market, and polishes them to a mirror sheen. They took Dota and polished it into LoL, they took the auto chess format and polished into TFT, they polished the CCG format into LoR. There's no doubt in my mind that they're going to take the classic MMO format and polish it into something amazing.
Am I mistaken or is FF14 not the biggest mmo at the moment? Even if it isn’t, ignoring a bunch of other mmo’s and rushing a very mid video is off brand for Necrit.
I'm not sure if FF14 has more players than WoW at this point but I would argue that it's the best "theme park" MMO on the market at this point, which is why it's weird that Necrit said there's "little to no competition" in that genre.
honestly im all for this ive wanted the mmo to go this route since i heard about it the classic wow formula for mmo's is great for social interaction which imo should be the lifeblood of an mmo themeparks dont feel much like mmo's to me theres not enough interaction you get paired up with random people and never interact with them you see random people in the world and never interact with them the classic feel is just so much more fun and enjoyable i really hope thats the way riot is going ill be playing it so much if it is
Would be cool to see a WoW Hardcore server where PvP was always on everywhere, and every NPC, including instanced ones, could only ever be killed and looted once by anyone.
Players would drop all their loot on death, and their banked/auctioned/mailed items would be auctioned off on the AH.
I’ve never played a true MMO… but I’ve also got a feeling that if they take to long I many care even less about it…
I would argue one of the more succesful mmos of recent years, FF14, did in fact do one big shake up differently that worked out well. Changing the class system.
Instead of making a race and having them have a preset class, you can change your class on the same character and effectively level all of them on one character without making an alt.
This is a system I would love to see taken in on riots MMO imo. Then you can tie classes to individual areas, like the Noxian Berserker, the Ionian Blademaster, Etc, and have the lore of each class much more deeply tied to the worlds lore itself. as well as have different avenues of classes available to you, without having to make and level a bunch of alts. Because the leveling experience generally sucks in every mmo ever.
Im also in the minority though, i understand this, as I dislike classic WoW, and prefer retail or ff14.

Doesn't FFXIV use the whole themepark approach as well? I'd argue that that with WoW classic and FFXIV the market for theme park style MMOs is already pretty well populated. I think those two are the largest MMOs I can think of in general, with almost all other MMOs being MMOs secondarily only and serving a different niche on the gameplay front, rather than the lay-out front...
I'd argue the FF has evolved the theme-park formula more than wow with stuff like the Ultimate Raids and Bozja area, it's very weird to me that Necrit just, didn't mention it at all.

Since league is all about combining items to make better items, what if Riot goes that route? You no longer farm rocks and trees, you kill people who always drop at least 1 component, then you have a game where you could put a group of 10 mobs in and Yone ult them and just see your inventory fill up with 10-20 item/armor components and fragments.

All Rito needs is more engaging gameplay while having that WoW like formula that just moves the genre forward.
I'm a decades old WoW player, but Hardcore WoW is literally named after and inspired by POE's Hardcore League mode that came out 13 yrs ago. Don't twist it around like Blizzard made it, those 0 foresight and foreskin old bats wouldn't see money making opportunity if you put it in front of them thanks to Bobby "Esports is a fad" Kotick. There will definitely be a Hardcore League that's separated from Regular League like how PoE does, that's how Riot can appeal to both the hardcore playerbase and the casual playerbase who don't want to tell people they play Maple Story.
The only concern I have about that is what's happened to LoR. riot tried to do a more "traditional" ccg battle game, with crafting cards and unlocks and whatever else, and despite the game being distinct in so many ways they never actually, really, broken through even the hearthstone barriers.
So, doing the same thing a little differently than the current industry leader is not always a sure bet. League works in large part because it's simplified and streamlined the dota formula.
I don't think there's room to simplify the formula much in an MMO.

that's why Riot Forge Failed. There was 0 marketing, Riot didn't wanted to succed, no matter how important it was for the Lore. Know we know, after the Ex-Rioters talking, Riot just cared about one success (Could be Forge, LoR, Arcane) And the one that worked, the others would dissapear. Arcane won, So LoR and Forge died. That's the real Riot.
I pray to every god on this earth and beyond that they don't go for an "old school" model just to farm nostalgia. Not every person looking forward to this is 40. Even though I'm young, I have some experience with MMOs and would LOVE to see some major shakeups. Some new ideas and approaches. If it ends up being reskinned wow in Runeterra I'm not touching it.
P.S. If the combat is tab targeting I might become a terrorist, and don't give me any of that soft lock bullshit.
Nothing personal Necrit but "No other MMO that has tried to innovate has succeeded" feels like the line of someone who doesn't play MMOs. The graveyard is very large yes, but Guild Wars 2 is still going fairly strong and technically falls into the category of having "innovated". Meanwhile WoW has had clones, now and in the past, and they've also all died. The idea that you could somehow build a WoW sized MMO just by being designed like WoW is, to be frankly, extremely dumb logic. It's like conspiracy theory board covered in string with a tanker truck pumping copium into the room levels of bad logic and MMO player "GIVE ME MORE MMO!" screaming.

why does it seem like he wants a WOW 2.0? They have all the resources required to truly create something that is a mix of the old and new things to make their game stand out. If they just make a WOW clone it will be dead on arrival
Theme park , sandpark, sandbox theres an mmo in every genre that has succeeded. I just hope riots mmo if its a theme park doesnt stall on content for to long, thats the biggest downfall of themeparks unless they have a massive audiance already that r willing to stick around.
It's interesting that you say they're going to compete for a place with very little other competition... While also citing that WoW is their competition in the space, and every MMO that has ever tried to beat WoW at its own game has lost because WoW has the investment of folks who have been playing for 15+ years.

I think you're discounting retail WoW in this. It's going a lot stronger than a lot of people try to make it seem. I love SoD and I know Hardcore hit it big for a bit but I can't deny that retail is still heavy hitting.

I think the Still Here cinematic's Morgana and Kayle part is from Canticle Of The Winged Sisters - VII (The Battle of Zeffira) and VIII (What Cannot be Undone) because as of my understanding there is a time jump after VIII, so they don't split instantly after that. (I know this is not related to this video, but i don't know where else to put this. Does someone else think the same way? )

Wow Classic is doing well for the same reasons OldSchool Runescape is doing well... Nostalgia. Lot's of players have good memories of the time when they played the original game, and want to try to relive those memories.
Or, just like old school runescape, its a good game. OSRS is bigger than ever, 200k concurrent players

Well, they will simply have to do better than them. Better lore, better graphics, better engine, better class and combat design. From what I remember one of the riot employees have confirmed that there will be an action combat, so that would be a thing that could make the game different from FF14 and WoW. Keep the classic formula, while taking a modern take in fields that can be improved.

I am hoping they follow in the footsteps of Classic, and don't get too bogged down with recreating some of the skills necessary for League. Albeit being able to move while casting would be nice. That said, it would be nice if they maybe took a page from like, Guild Wars 2, in which you have a somewhat tailored personal story to progress through along with side quests. And please, please be open world. Instancing just takes so much of the wind out of the sails in emersion.

Im honestly just hoping they have a diversity of classes. Like theres the base class of a classic arcane mage that once you hit a certain level you can specialize into a sub group of it along with maybe a profession, then into a second specialization futher down the line. But ik im asking for way too much..

What does that even mean? LoR is a cardgame, people play it to play cards. Lore in any game is an incredibly minor factor especially when it comes to monetization. Players arent a charity.

I'm not sure looking at classic WoW, or rather only looking at classic WoW is a good idea. While it is popular, there have been MMOs that iterated on the formula and managed to gather their own playerbases. For example Guild Wars 2's exploration and open world content is probably the best I have seen in MMOs. Or we have Final Fantasy 14 that focuses on and delivers a great story in an MMO enviroment, while also having battle content that, I would say, is at least equivalent to WoW's.
Also, imo, if they want to target not just MMO players, but players new to the genre, classic WoW is a horrible template. It is a very slow game that doesn't respect your time at all and while people tolerate it in WoW, I don't think they will do so in a new MMO.

New World approached the classic MMO style, which is one of the reasons why I love it. However, it failed in delivering content fast enough and also in supporting players: most players provided feedback about the fact that quests were bad scripted and you would waste a lot of time going from point A to point B and back to A just to talk to an NPC. It took AGS more than a year to revamp the quest system and improve fast travel, at which point the player base was already at its bare mininum. If Riot's MMO goes anywhere near NW's style while delivering good amount of content on launch as well as work fast to fix/deliver what players want, I am certain that it will be a great MMO.

That's not a bad thing, though. Knowing Riot it won't be a 1 to 1 copy and it'll still be based on the Runeterra IP.

The thing is the MMO market is one of a kind and if Riot wants their game to be profitable and to be able to satisfy their audience, they must take notes from the longest running game of the genre. They might use other games' stuff for inspiration, though. They are not making WoW 2.
There's several popular MMOs out there right now which are not like WoW. It sounds more like Necrit only ever played WoW so he uses it as the only frame of reference. "Boss Baby vibes" type of deal.
As my copium is directed entirely towards the mmo, all I want is to see the world of Runeterra. Idc about how the gameplay would be, I just want to see a proper Zaun or Ionia.
BDO had potential to wipe WOW of a ton of fans... yet for me and many the systems in game for leveling gear or unlocking certain content is heavily tied to RNG and that's infuriating... I still go back to BDO a few times per year as holy shit the combat is ungodly fun, no other mmo comes close to how solid that combat system is
So much, like a classic formula of grinding your stuff with BDO combat and the lore of runeterra with riot's storytelling would so fire really
While classic and classic hardcore had a plethora of players, it was never more than active players on retail. The vocal minority and twitch streamers will say classic wow was the retail killer but it just wasn’t. So if they go the classic wow route they may find themselves not appealing to the majority of players
At this point it doesnt matter what kind of mmo they will make

But clasic route will work the best since for it you need higly developed map which they had for quite some time
I am hopeful for this but not holding my breath too hard. Already played one MMO with the LoL community (BnS) and I am not too keen to play another TBH. The community makes the game in MMOs and if its shit the game will be shit.

Streamer blindness at play here. Classic hardcore was popular for streamers, it was a tiny minority of players. Classic WoW dominates streaming, but more people are STILL playing retail.
It would be so foolish to try to make a "classic" mmo without the nostalgia for the outright bad design decisions of Classic. Worked really well for WildStar!

Honestly as much as i love the world of runetera and league universe i still cant see it be anywhere near close to what Ashes of Creation guys are making, its just on a whole different scale and going strong for a long time. For me if anyone is going to be the "chosen mmo" its AOC in my opinion.

"Nobody is really playing any other mmos these days" Guild Wars 2 POE FFXIV, I've literally played at least a bit of all of those games in the last month and I've barely ever touched wow. FFXIV was the biggest mmo on the planet for a while, while wow was in downtime and everyone was giving xiv a shot while it was readying up to release endwalker. A fuck ton of people are playing POE especially with the POE2 news and the constant new leagues they add, idk about guild wars 2 but i bought the expansions while they were super cheap and ive been enjoying the game so far.
XIV certainly doesn't feel like no one is playing it, queue pops are instant or short and there's always at least 90 parties in the party finder even when it's 2pm on a monday for me right now. People are definitely still playing other mmos these days
